This paper concerns the development of a designer friendly hull form parameterization and its coupling with advanced global optimization algorithms. As optimization algorithms, we choose the Partial Swarm Optimization(PSO) recently introduced to solve global optimization problems. Most general-purpose optimization softwares used in industrial applications use gradient-based algorithms, mainly due to their convergence properties and computational efficiency when a relatively few number of variables are considered. However, local optimizers have difficulties with local minima and non-connected feasible regions. Because of the increase of computer power and of the development of efficient Global Optimization (GO) methods, in recent years nongradient-based algorithms have attracted much attention. Furthermore, GO methods provide several advantages over local approaches. In the paper, the derivative-based SQP and the GO approach PSO are compared with their relative performances in solving some typical ship design optimization problem focusing on their effectiveness and efficiency.

Simulation-based hull form optimization is a typical HEB (high-dimensional, expensive computationally, black-box) problem. Conventional optimization algorithms easily fall into the "curse of dimensionality" when dealing with HEB problems. A recently proposed Cross-Entropy (CE) optimization algorithm is an advanced stochastic optimization algorithm based on a probability model, which has the potential to deal with high-dimensional optimization problems. Currently, the CE algorithm is still in the theoretical research stage and rarely applied to actual engineering optimization. One reason is that the Monte Carlo (MC) method is used to estimate the high-dimensional integrals in parameter update, leading to a large sample size. This paper proposes an improved CE algorithm based on quasi-Monte Carlo (QMC) estimation using high-dimensional truncated Sobol subsequence, referred to as the QMC-CE algorithm. The optimization performance of the proposed algorithm is better than that of the original CE algorithm. With a set of identical control parameters, the tests on six standard test functions and a hull form optimization problem show that the proposed algorithm not only has faster convergence but can also apply to complex simulation optimization problems.
Using the continuous Hopfield network model as the basis to solve the general crisp and fuzzy constrained optimization problem is presented and examined. The model lies in its transformation to a parallel algorithm which distributes the work of numerical optimization to several simultaneously computing processors. The method is applied to different structural engineering design problems that demonstrate this usefulness, satisfaction or potential. The computing algorithm has been given and discussed for a designer who can program it without difficulty.
The technique of integrated design optimization is proposed to design spatial structures. Various element technologies such as topology optimization, layout editing and size optimization processes are used in an integrated manner to improve the performance of spatial structures. In order to demonstrate the present technique, a unit spatial structure is optimized and numerical results are described here.

This paper presents a highly efficient aeroelastic optimization method based on a surrogate model; the model is verified by considering the case of a high-aspect-ratio composite wing. Optimization frameworks using the Kriging model and genetic algorithm (GA), the Kriging model and improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO), and the back propagation neural network model (BP) and IPSO are presented. The feasibility of the method is verified, as the model can improve the optimization efficiency while also satisfying the engineering requirements. Moreover, the effects of the number of design variables and number of constraints on the optimization efficiency and objective function are analysed in detail. The accuracy of two surrogate models in aeroelastic optimization is also compared. The Kriging model is constructed more conveniently, and its predictive accuracy of the aeroelastic responses also satisfies the engineering requirements. According to the case of a high-aspect-ratio composite wing, the GA is better at global optimization.
By managing not only geographical information but also various kinds of attribute data. GIS presents useful information for decision-makings. Most of decision-making problems using GIS can be formulated into network-optimization problems. In this study we deal with the implementation of network optimization system that extracts data from the database in GIS. solves a network optimization problem and present optimal solutions through GIS' graphical user interface. We design a nitwork optimization system and present some implementation techniques by showing a prototype of the network optimization system. Our network optimization system consists of three components : the interface module for user and GIS the basic network the program module the advanced network optimization program module. To handle large-scale networks the program module including various techniques for large sparse networks is also considered, For the implementation of the network optimization system we consider two approaches : the method using script languages supported by GIS and the method using client tools of GIS. Finally some execution results displayed by the prototype version of network optimization system are given.
This study suggests a data driven optimization approach, which simulates the models of human learning processes from cognitive sciences. It shows how the human learning processes can be simulated and applied to solving combinatorial optimization problems. The main advantage of using this method is in applying it into problems, which are very difficult to simulate. 'Undecidable' problems are considered as best possible application areas for this suggested approach. The concept of an 'undecidable' problem is redefined. The learning models in human learning and decision-making related to combinatorial optimization in cognitive and neural sciences are designed, simulated, and implemented to solve an optimization problem. We call this approach 'SLO : simulated learning for optimization.' Two different versions of SLO have been designed: SLO with position & link matrix, and SLO with decomposition algorithm. The methods are tested for traveling salespersons problems to show how these approaches derive new solution empirically. The tests show that simulated learning for optimization produces new solutions with better performance empirically. Its performance, compared to other hill-climbing type methods, is relatively good.
For many practical and industrial optimization problems where some or all of the system components are stochastic, the objective functions cannot be represented analytically. Therefore, modeling by computer simulation is one of the most effective means of studying such complex systems. In this paper, with discussion of simulation optimization techniques, a case study in machining process for application of simulation optimization is presented. Most of optimization techniques can be classified as single-or multiple-response techniques. The optimization of single-response category, these strategies are gradient based search methods, stochastic approximate method, response surface method, and heuristic search methods. In the multiple-response category, there are basically five distinct strategies for treating the responses and finding the optimum solution. These strategies are graphical method, direct search method, constrained optimization, unconstrained optimization, and goal programming methods. The choice of the procedure to employ in simulation optimization depends on the analyst and the problem to be solved.
Multidisciplinary design optimization(MDO) can yield optimal design considering all the disciplinary requirements concurrently. A method to implement the collaborative optimization(CO) approach, one of the MDO methodologies, is developed using a pre-compiler “EzpreCompiler”, a design optimization library “EzOptimizer”, and a common object request broker architecture(CORBA) in distributed computing environment. The CO approach is applied to a mathematical example to show its applicability and equivalence to standard optimization(SO) formulation. In a realistic engineering problem such as optimal design of a two-member hub frame, optimal design of a speed reducer and initial design of a bulk carrier, the CO yields better results than the SO. Furthermore, the CO allows the distributed processing using the CORBA, which leads to reduction of overall computation time.
We have developed a new optimization algorithm termed simple bacteria cooperative optimization (sBCO) based on bacteria behavior patterns [1]. In [1], we have introduced the algorithm with basic operations and showed its feasibility with some function optimization problems. Since the sBCO was the first version with only basic operations, its performance was not so good. In this paper, we adopt a new operation, rank replacement, to the sBCO for improving its performance and compare its results to those of the simple genetic algorithm (sGA) which has been well known and widely used as an optimization algorithm. It was found from the experiments with four function optimization problems that the sBCO with rank replacement was superior to the sGA. This shows that our algorithm can be a good optimization algorithm.
