  • Generating electromagnetic waves with Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) properties is a fast-growing research subject in both radio and optics. This paper describes the generation of OAM carrying waves using a circular array of rectangular planar monopole antennas. The proposed design combines simplicity, compactness, and most importantly very wideband of operating frequencies (about 20-160 GHz, bandwidth ratio about 1:8) which makes it suitable for future applications.

  • An efficient global optimization approach for a periodic plasmonic nanoslit array based on extraordinary optical transmission within an acceptable time range is proposed using 𝚀 factor analysis method. The particle swarm optimization is employed as a global optimization tool. The figure of merit is defined as a product of transmission peak value and 𝚀 factor. The design variables are the slit width, height, and period of the slit array, respectively. The optical properties such as transmission spectrum and bandwidth are calculated rigorously using the finite element method.

  • To assess the preference and efficacy of empirical fitting methods with spheric and aspheric RGP lenses. Methods: Healthy 37 subjects were fitted with spheric design (diameter 9.3 mm) on right eye and aspheric design (dia 9.6 mm) on the left eye. Base curves which were fitted empirically (using on-K, Kavg-0.50D (or 1.00D) and manufacturer's recommended fitting guide) were compared with another base curve which obtained the best diagnostic fit with spheric and aspheric RGP lenses. The preference and fitting type (lid attachment or interpalpebral) for two design lenses were investigated 2 weeks after fitting RGP lenses. Results: Of 33 successful RGP lens-wearing subjects, 76% preferred spheric design compared with 24% of aspheric RGP lens wearers. Sixty seven percent were fitted with lid-attachment in spheric lenses, whereas 64% were fitted with lid-attachment in aspheric lenses. The acceptable fit success rates within ${\pm}$0.50D of base curves were 97% for the on-K fit, 100% for the Kavg-0.50D fit and 100% of the manufacturer's guide fit compared with the diagnostic fit in spheric design, whereas 91%, 79% and 94% reported on-K, Kavg-1.00D and manufacturer's guide, respectively, in aspheric design. Conclusions: Although aspheric RGP lenses are more popular in the Korean market, it is still preferable to fit subjects with spheric RGP lenses. Empirical fitting may be best accomplished with the spheric lenses using Kavg-0.50D fit and the manufacturer's fitting guide, whereas aspheric RGP lens designs are unacceptable lens fit based on empirical fitting.

  • We employ the SOR method to analyze CPW electrodes of Ti:$LiNbO_3$ Mach-Zehnder traveling-wave optical modulator in the tapered region of an optical modulator. In the tapered region of the modulator, we design the electrodes satisfying $Z_c=50{\Omega}$. In the modulation region, we find two find sets of design parameters. One set is for $Z_c=50{\Omega}$, $n_{eff}=2.26$ and the another is for $n_{eff}=2.2$, $Z_c=47.7{\Omega}$.

  • We discuss the design and fabrication of CCD or C-MOS imaging lenses with hybrid diffractive / refractive optics. The hybrid lenses are made of optical grade plastic materials. We have been able to significantly reduce the number of elements while maintaining very high optical quality. This paper describes the conception, design, fabrication and evaluation of hybrid lenses in comparison with conventional refractive lenses. The new lens has excellent optical quality, very light weight, compact size and low manufacturing cost.

  • We design an F/1.8 smart -phone camera lens utilizing he Forbes aspherical-surface equation, which can effectively create a strong asphere, compared to the conventional, standard aspherical equation. We also describe the principal methodology and procedural steps of optical design to achieve specifications.

  • In this paper, we propose efficient design and construction of an infrared wide angle optical system with low distortion utilizing a high resolution detector for automobile application. The operational convenience and the recognition ability have been improved significantly by applying the high resolution uncooled thermal detector with wide angle optical design. The active ahtermalization mechanism is implemented so that the adjustment of the optical component of the system is to be made automatically according to the temperature change by motorized control. The modulation transfer function (MTF) is about 50% at the Nyquist frequency close the diffraction limit. The distortion is less than 5% at the edge field. As a result, a high-resolution uncooled thermal optical system with wide field of view (FOV) is assembled, aligned and its performance is tested successfully.

  • In this paper, the geometrical properties of the optical system for Head Mounted Display (HMD) were investigated. Also, this work deals with the concept for an optical system design bated on Diffractive Optical Elements (DOE). In designing the optical system for HMD, it is considered that the optical system should have compact, high performance, and comfortable properties while user sees the picture. In order to satisfy these requirements, we applied DOE and aspheric surfaces to the lens so that correction of color and monochromatic aberrations could be obtained. Also, the design and evaluation for the optical system were carried out using the generalized model of the human eye. Finally, it was expected to fulfill all the requirements of an HMD system.

  • The equivalent lens conversion technique is applied to design achromatic doublet and aplanatic doublet. A thin doublet which has zero axial thicknesses, are corrected for the third order aberrations at first, and the thin doublet is converted into thick lens system by using the equivalent lens conversion. Two types of cemented doublets, the Fraunhofer type and the Steinheil type, are designed by using a crown glass BaK-2 and a flint glass SF-2. In the thin doublet design, there are two achromatic solutions and a aplanatic solution for the both types.

  • The performance of the payload Electro-Optical System (EOS) in satellite system is affected by various factors, such as optics design, camera electronics design, and the characteristics of the CCD (Charge Coupled Device) used, etc. Of these factors, the camera electronics design is somewhat unique in that its operational parameters can be adjusted even after the satellite launch. In this paper, the effect of video gain on the non-uniformity correction performance is addressed. And a new optimal non-uniformity correction scheme is proposed and analyzed using the data from real camera electronics unit based on a TDI (Time Delayed Integration) type of CCD. The test results show that the performance of the conventional non-uniformity correction scheme is affected significantly when the video gain is added. On the other hand, in our proposed scheme, the performance is not dependent on the video gain. The insensitivity of the non-uniformity performance on the video-gain is mainly due to the fact that the correction is performed after the dark signal is subtracted from system response.
