CF(Circular Fresnel) POF(Plastic Optical Fiber) daylighting system is a beam daylighting system utilizing solar direct beam radiation. In this study, a CF POF daylighting system has been introduced, developed and applied to KIER test buildings. The CF POF daylighting system consists of three parts: light collector, light transmitter and light diffuser. The light collector includes a Circular Fresnel lens focusing solar direct illuminance by sun tracking. The light transmitter contains the POF cable which has light transmission loss of 4.5% per meter. The light diffuser has about 80% diffuser efficiency. This study aims to evaluate of POF daylighting system performance. At the results of a CFPOF system performance evaluation, the theoretical CFPOF system efficiency was 41.9% and the actual CFPOF system efficiency at the KIER test building was 37.5%. The difference was due partly to the connecting efficiency.

This study describes a novel method for detecting and measuring partial discharge (PD) on an electrical facility such as an insulated power cable or switchgear using fiber optic sensing technology, and a distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) system. This method has distinct advantages over traditional PD sensing techniques based on an electrical method, including immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), long range detection, simultaneous detection for multiple points, and exact location. In this study, we present a DAS system for PD detection with performance evaluation and experimental results in a simulated environment. The results show that the system can be applied to PD detection.
Compared with other transport means, safety and timeliness are the merits of railways. Unexpectedly when accident happens, much time and human strength are required to cope with the accident. And for swift recovery, systematic rehabilitation is needed. Recently using MTS(Moving picture Transmission System), we can perform accident rehabilitation and recording work efficiently. MTS is the device that transmits continuous picture information from accident field to control center. We are developing the appropriate system to railway situation to make use of the existing information communication technology, processing technology of video-tex, super high speed transmission technology through fiber-optic, copper cable and network description of information Technology, etc. If these communication-based can technologies are applied to railway system, railway managers can control the accident by inspecting the picture of accident field and can contribute to the safe train operation and the improvement of railway management. In this paper, we investigate the connecting methods when optical fiber is used for moving picture data transmission of train accidents, and its problems. And, we validate MTS's performance through about 28km section of field test.

The thesis here by shows that the extant suspension wire, which is stretched between electric poles to support a variety of communication wires, can be replaced by specially-redesigned cables called OPSW(Composite Suspension Wire with Optical Fiber) which have been devised for the first time in the world so that the functions of both communication and support can be united into one cable which is sure to be successfully installed on site, hence leading to outstanding effects that it can sharply reduce the load applied to electric poles as well as the cost of forthcoming constructions and that it can accordingly make a great contribution to the building of Smart Grid network.

In this paper, we developed a fiber optic interferometer system based on frequency-swept laser. This frequency-swept laser with an external-cavity structure can generate a high coherent light with a linewidth of 132 kHz at 1552 nm. It also shows a superior swept linearity of R2 = 0.99995 under repetition rate of 200 kHz due to absence of mechanical moving parts in the laser cavity. By using a piezoelectric fiber optic stretcher, various vibration experiments were implemented, such as 0.5 to 2.0 kHz vibration signals with intervals of 0.5 kHz, with a sampling rate of 7 kHz. Real-time peak tracking can be successfully recovered according to the applied vibration frequency with high linearity of R2 = 0.99983.

Recently, fiber optic sensors, which have many advantages are being applied in various fields by replacing conventional electric sensors. To transmit the light signals between an interrogator and a sensor head, optical components such as an optical adaptor and optical jumper cords are generally used. When signals are transmitted using an adaptor, the end surface of each jumper cord is faced together. If alien substances exist on the core surface of an optical fiber, those can cause light transmission loss and signal disappearance. For this reason, non-contact fiber jumper cords are developed to overcome the problems that require continual attention. The light transmission performance of non-contact fiber jumper cords are also evaluated. From the test results, conventional fiber jumper cords are unable to transmit the signals over 2 mm cavity between the ends of both cords. Otherwise, non-contact fiber jumper cords can transmit the signals with stability up to the cavity of 7 mm though they have more transmission loss than the conventional ones. Consequently, non-contact fiber jumper cords that have better signal stability than conventional ones in environments are highly recommended in field applications, especially if they play a role as a cable for signal transmission between fiber optic sensors.
The buried fiber optic cable as a distributed intrusion sensor for detecting and locating intruders along the long perimeters is proposed. Phase changes resulting from either the pressure of the intruder on the ground immediately above the buried fiber or from seismic disturbances in the vicinity are sensed by a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer. Light pulses from a Er:fiber cw laser with a narrow, <3kHz-range, spectral width and a frequency drift of < 1 MHz/min are injected into one end of the fiber, and the backscattered light from the fiber is monitored with a photodetector. Results of preliminary studies, measurement of phase changes produced by pressure and seismic disturbances in buried fiber optic cables and simulation of ${\varphi}-OTDR$ response over long fiber paths, to establish the feasibility of the concept are described. The field experiments indicate adequate phase changes, more than 1t-rad, are produced by intruders on foot and vehicle for burial depths in the 0.2 m to 1 m range in sand, clay and fine gravel soils. The simulations predict a range of 10 km with 35 m range resolution and 30 km with 90 m range resolution. This technology could in a cost-effective manner provide enhanced perimeter security.

Many researchers worldwide have been making a lot of effort to find sustainable clean energy source to replace the current fossil fuels. However, solar energy is considered as the ultimate energy solution to supply the world total power consumption. Light can be used for lighting, heating, wired and wireless communications, etc. Moreover, even light-driven motors which can directly convert optical energy into kinetic energy are studied recently. In this paper, we analyze optical energy delivery through multi-core optical fibers. Our estimation shows that an optical power of 2 kW can be transmitted through a multi-core fiber and an optical power of >10 MW can be transmitted through a bundle of optical fibers with a diameter of several centimeters. It seems competitive compared with the electric power delivery through a copper cable.

In this paper, we designed, constructed and evaluated the system for the FTTH suited to a residence and apartment using CWDM-PON techniques. These systems have capacity to service at 100Mbps rate to 384 users in the same breath. Also, the services include the internet, CATV, IPTV and wireless LAN. In the case of ire network, the data could be transmitted by UTP cable and optical fiber and case of wireless one, the data transmitted using WLAN. The distance between the cental office and the user is 20km and the data rate is 100Mbps maximum. Of course, the optical network used just one fiber optical core. For the basic material, we obtained the characteristics of optical transceiver module, Mux/Demux and transmission qualities depends on the environment.
