A Study on the Implementation of an All-IP Train Communication Network Using Plastic Optical Fiber (플라스틱 광섬유를 이용한 All-IP 열차통신네트워크 구현에 관한 연구)

  • Recent trains have broadband train communication networks to improve train operation safety and to provide passengers with multimedia services. Compared to glass optical fiber, plastic optical fiber (POF) has a large diameter; it also provides the good durability and maintainability necessary to railway applications. This paper suggests an All-IP broadband train communication network that connects all devices in the train through a POF interface. Performance tests according to Korean railroad standards shows that this POF interface is usable in the range of vibration and temperature conditions encountered in trains. A dedicated Layer-2 switch with the POF interface is developed for the construction of the All-IP train communication network. A prototype 1Gbps train communication network was set up in a trial-run of train on a metro line using the developed Layer-2 switch and POF. On-track tests indicated the feasibility of the POF train communication network. POF has an additional advantage of economic feasibility, and it is expected to start a trend toward broadband train communication networks using POF.

An Optical Fiber Perimeter Guard System Using OTDRs (OTDR을 이용한 광섬유 외곽경비시스템에 관한 연구)

  • The perimeter defense system was created and its characteristics were evaluated. It was designed to utilize the fiber sensing device, namely OTDR(Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) which has been used for the maintenance of the optical communication network. An OTDR was constituted by a pulse laser with the nature of 1310nm, +15dBm for the observation of 400 meter optical fence. The high-speed 32-bit processor(S3C2440) has applied to MPU(Main Processor Unit) which helps to improve the performance of OTDR algorithms. Consequently, the maximum error was 0.84 meter on the performance test of the 10km monitoring and the pass criteria of ${\pm}1m$ satisfied in all the sections. The alarm delay time was under 3 sec after detecting the disorder. For the case of secondary trespassing after primary trespassing, the optical switch was installed in OTDR to monitor the secondary trespassing and to measure the multi-point detection. Therefore, this paper shows that the detections of secondary trespassing and multi-point is possible by means of optical switch.

  • In this paper, various forms of technical methods as well as comparison analysis on constructing optical subscriber network were studied to find the most economical installation method in the future. Comparison analysis has been focused on the three popular types of optical subscriber networks in Korea, such as VDSL2, Ethernet-LAN and FTTH-R. A study is conducted on the initial installation investment per subscriber, equipment failure rate as well as power consumption per subscriber. As a results, FTTH-R network will be the most economical method in the future, but a gradual switch which undergoes a UTP-fiber hybrid method as the midway process is preferable in considering the existing installed copper UTP subscriber cables.

  • The recent explosion of data traffic, including cloud services, coupled with the Internet penetration has led to a surge in the need for ultra-fast optical networks that can efficiently connect the data center's reconfiguable resources. In this paper, the algorithms for controlling switching cell operation in the optical switch connection structure are proposed, and the resulting performance is compared and analyzed through simulation. Performance analysis results showed that the algorithm proposed in this paper has improved the probability of successful multi-connection setup by about 3 to 7% compared to the existing algorithm.

  • Photonic Slot Routing(PSR) is a promising approach to solve the fundamental scalability problem of all-optical packet switched WDM networks. In photonic slot routing, packets destined for the same subnetwork are aggregated to form a photonic slot which is jointly routed as a single unit of information through the network. The relative location of the nodes from bridge may cause to fairness problem in the unidirectional WDM ring network based on PSR. As photonic slots from different subnetworks can originate contentions at the bridge, packets may be dropped and retransmitted. Thus we evaluated the performance of PSR based WDM ring network in the point of fairness for each node and slot contentions at the bridge. Simulation results show that the PSR based WDM ring requires a slot access mechanism to guarantee the transmission fairness and efficient switch architecture to resolve slot contention at the bridge.

  • All-optical networks(AON) are emerging as the next generation broadband networks for wide-area and local-area networks. Many optical switch architectures are currently proposed to realize AON. Specially, optical switches using WDM have a lot of advantages in point of the optical transparency and network topology for B-ISDN services in AON. In this paper, two kinds of Knockout Optical Switching Architectures(KOSA) are proposed for high speed optical ATM networks. We use WDM technologies for them to operate in all-optical area and they are called Architecture-Ⅰ, Architecture-Ⅱ respectively. Each one represents different characteristics according to the number of components and the kind of components, which make KOSA have different performance and system complextity. In order to verify and to compare the performance, these architectures were analyzed and simulated in terms of cell loss ratio, system complexity and buffering speed.

Design of Switchable and Reconfigurable Semi-lumped Wideband Bandpass Filter

  • A switchable single-wideband (SWB)-to-dual-wideband (DWB) bandpass filter (BPF), which is realized by using lumped switches, is presented in this paper. By alternating the operation modes-ON and OFF-in which the ON mode is achieved by placing the capacitors at the switching spots and the OFF mode is achieved by replacing the capacitors with inductors, DWB-to-SWB BPF can be achieved on the same device. In addition, by changing the capacitor values, the center frequency (CF) of the lower passband of DWB BPF can be easily tuned from 1.69 GHz to 2.22 GHz, while the higher passband stays almost unchanged. As an example, an SWB-to-DWB BPF is designed, fabricated, and measured. This BPF exhibits good performance including wideband, high isolation, compact size, and ability to switch.

  • In this paper deals with PON Remote monitoring solution using Reflecting Filter. The current FTTH-PON can not be monitored in real time that Optical cable fault and Quality degradation of Splitter. To solve this problem, Monitoring can make Feeder Network and Splitter that Reflecting filter development using the basic structure of Fiber Bragg grating. Reflecting Filter is Quality Monitoring System shall provide tools for user to view and analyze degradation of cables and splitter in particular predict any gradual component degradation(Optical cable bending, splice, connector, etc) before it becomes service impacting. The Reflecting Filter solution is splitter down and confirm the fault location of optical cable and it will send central control station can be monitored system an alarm to the OLT. In other words, wavelength side branches Mating existing communication affairs (Coupler) using the core of one optical wavelength for live monitoring two wavelengths and sends the subscriber side modem and aggregation switch device remotely using a reflective optical line filter monitoring the study of the system. this study can development of Reflecting filter improve the average processing time of Optical cable fault and efficient Maintenance of the network.

  • Recently, the optical subscriber interface module uses the high performance network processor to quickly develop new application services such as MPLS, VPN, RPR and EPON with a short time-to-market. Although a number of vendors are developing the network processor at 2.5Gbps, only the IBM NP4GS3 can provide packet processing with wire-speed at 2.5Gbps. IBM NP4GS3, however, uses its unique speed DASL interface instead of CSIX-Ll interface, which has standardized by M: Forum currently Therefore, we implement an interconnection mechanism to use the switch fabric with CSIX-Ll interface. In this paper, we suggest the architecture and a packet control mechanism supporting interconnection between IBM NP4GS3 DASL and CSIX-Ll switch interface using the common IBM UDASL ASIC and XILINX FPGA.

  • In this paper, we propose a new priority Optical Burst Switching (OBS) protocol based on a hop count, which can provide an efficient utilization in optical wireless networks. Under several legacy schemes, a switch drops the burst with a shorter time among ones regardless of its traversed hop count. As a result, the dropped burst that have been traversed more hops might cause to waste bandwidth than the one traversed a few hops. Noting that this problem, we propose a Just Enough Time (JET) with a hop count scheme which can reduce the wasted bandwidth by prioritizing the burst traversed more hops over others. The simulation results shows that the proposed scheme has more advantages over the legacy schemes in terms of the burst blocking probability and the link utilization.
