  • In this paper, we developed the automatic optical fiber aligner by image processing and automatic loading system. Optical fiber is indispensable for optical communication systems that transmit large volumes of data at high speed, but super-precision technology in sub-micron units is required for optical axis adjustment, we have developed 6-axis micro stage system for I/O optical fiber arrays, the initial automatic aligning system/software for a input optical array by the image processing technique, fast I/O-synchronous aligning strategy, the automatic loading/unloading system and the automatic UV bonding mechanism. In order to adjust the alignment it used on PC based motion controller, a $10\mu\textrm{mm}$ repeat-detailed drawing of automatic loading system is developed by a primary line up for high detailed drawing. Also, at this researches used the image processing system and algorithm instead of the existing a primary hand-line up. and fiber input array and waveguide chip formed in line by automatic. Therefore, the developed and manufactured optical aligning system in this research fulfills the great role of support industry for major electronics manufacturers, telecommunications companies, universities, government agencies and other research institutions.

  • A numerical study is conducted on the optical fiber coating flow in a primary coating nozzle consisting of three major parts: a resin chamber, a contraction and a coating die of small diameter. The flow is driven by the optical fiber penetrating the center of the nozzle at a high speed. The axisymmetric two-dimensional flow and heat transfer induced by viscous heating are examined based on the laminar flow assumption. Numerical experiments are performed with varying the convergent angle of nozzle contraction and the optical fiber drawing speed. The numerical results show that for high drawing speed greater than 30 m/s, there is a transition in the essential flow features depending on the convergent angle. For a large convergent angle greater than $30^{\circ}$, unfavorable multicellular flow structures are monitored, which could be associated with wall boundary-layer separation. In the regime of small convergent angle, as the angle increases, the highest resin temperature at the exit of die and the coating thickness decrease but the sensitivity of coating thickness on drawing speed and the maximum shear strain of resin on the optical fiber increase. The effects of the convergent angle are discussed in view of compromise searching for an appropriate angle for high-speed optical fiber coating.

  • In this paper, we describe the fabrication process and the characteristics of polarization maintaining photonic crystal fibers (PM-PCFs). The PM-PCF is fabricated by stack-and-draw method, i.e., stacking silica capillary tubes (making a PM-PCF preform) and drawing to optical fiber. Firstly, a PM-PCF preform is formed by stacking two kinds of capillary tubes around a solid silica rod and jacketing these stacked tubes with an outer silica tube (out-jacket tube). Later, the desired preform is drawn to a fiber in a high temperature drawing tower. We also compare the polarization properties such as polarization dependent loss, birefringence, and differential group delay of the fabricated PM-PCF with those of the conventional PANDA PM fiber.

  • $Pr^{3+}-doped$ selenide glass optical fiber, which guarantees single-mode propagation of above at least 1310 nm, has been successfully fabricated using a Ge-Ga-Sb-Se glass system. Thermal properties such as glass transition temperature and viscosity of the glasses have been analyzed to find optimum conditions for fiber drawing. Attenuation loss incorporating the effects of an electronic band gap transition, Rayleigh scattering, and multiphonon absorption has also been theoretically estimated for the Ge-Ga-Sb-Se fiber. A conventional double crucible technique has been applied to fabricate the selenide fiber. The background loss of the fiber was estimated to be approximately 0.64 dB/m at 1650 nm, which can be considered fairly good. When excited at approximately 1470 nm, $Pr^{3+}-doped$ selenide fiber resulted in amplified spontaneous emission and saturation behavior with increasing pump power in a U-band wavelength range of 1625 to 1675 nm.

  • In a mass manufacturing system of optical fibers, the sufficient cooling of glass fibers freshly drawn from a draw furnace is essential, asinadequately cooled glass fibers can lead to poor resin coating on the fiber surface and possibly fiber breakage during the process. In order to improve fiber cooling at a high drawing speed, it is common to use a helium injection into a glass fiber cooling unit in spite of the high cost of the helium supply. The present numerical analysis carried out three-dimensional thermo-fluid computations of the cooling gas flow and heat transfer on moving glass fiber to determine the cooling performance of glass fiber cooling depending on the method of helium injection. The results showed that afront injection of helium is most effective compared to a uniform or rear injection for reducing air entrainment into the unit and thus cooling the glass fibers at a high fiber drawing speed. However, above a certain amount of injected helium, there was no more increase of the cooling effect regardless of the helium injection method.

  • In this computational study of optical fiber manufacturing, WOW (wet-on-wet) double coating process on freshly drawn glass fiber has been numerical modelled and simulated using a simplified geometry of typical optical fiber coating apparatus. The numerical domain includes primary and secondary coating dies along with secondary coating cup and the interface between primary and secondary coating liquids are investigated using level set method. Coating liquid viscosity is an important parameter and its dependence on temperature is also considered. Since there would be possibility for pressure and temperature of primary coating liquid to be increased substantially at high fiber drawing speed, the effects of increased pressure and temperature of primary coating liquid are examined on flow patterns of coating liquids in secondary coating cup. In case that both pressure and temperature of primary coating liquid are high enough, liquid interface becomes noticeably unstable and this flow instability could adversely affect the uniform coatings and final quality of produced optical fiber.

  • Structural studies of series of 'as spun' and drawn PEEK fibers have been carried out using X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy techniques. The analysis of results suggest that fibers produced at a constant draw ratio with increasing draw temperatures show enhanced orientation and crystalline behaviour. The resolved equatorial and meridional traces provide additional structural parameters in terms of crystallinity, crystallite size, and crystallite thickness. It is concluded that drawing at a temperature below $T_g(i.e.,\;144^{\circ}C)$ results in poorly oriented non-crystalline materials, whereas drawing above $T_g$ results in highly oriented semi crystalline materials. Additional drawing proved to increase the overall orientation with slight improvements in lateral order of the chain molecules. Quantitative analysis revealed that the crystallite size increases with increasing drawing temperature. The results also revealed the increased crystallite size upon additional drawing. Crystalline orientation parameter, $_c$, suggests almost perfect orientation. In all cases, the amorphous orientation is found to be lower than the overall orientation parameter obtained from the optical birefringence. As a result of additional drawing, crystalline orientation was found to increase slightly but the increase in the orientation of non-crystalline material was found to be substantial. An average crystalline density was determined from the orthorhombic unit cell dimensions. It was found to vary as a result of processing conditions. It was also found that the value of the maximum birefringence shows heavy dependence on the chain conformation.

  • MCVD(modified chemical vapor deposition) used in making optical-fiber currently utilizes the hydrogen-oxygen burner as a energy supply source. To improve the productivity and to reduce the manufacturing cost of optical-fiber, a natural gas-oxygen burner has been developed. The manufacturing processes of optical-fiber consist of vapor deposition, collapse and drawing processes. Among these processes, the vapor deposition and the collapse processes are important in terms of improving the productivity and saving the production cost. The vapor deposition and collapse processes are performed by combustion heat and flame force supplied by a burner. So the flame force of the burner used in these processes is required to have an optimal and consistent value in order to allow uniform heating and collapse of quartz tube. In this regard, the momentum ratio of natural gas and oxygen has been optimally determined by modification of a burner and the inlet flow pass also has been modified.

  • An Ge/B-doped optical fiber with high photosensitivity was fabricated to induce large second-order optical nonlinearity by UV poling. It was found that long period fiber gratings were inscribed on the fiber by the 248 nm KrF excimer laser irradiation with pulse energy of 116 mJ/$cm^2$ and pulse frequency of 10 Hz without hydrogen loading treatment. The photosensitivity was measured by use of the long period fiber grating pair method and the refractive index change of 3.3$10{\times}^{-3}$ was found to be induced in the core of the optical fiber by the KrF excimer laser irradiation of 8.67 kJ/$cm^2$. An H-shaped optical fiber was also fabricated for the UV poling through optimization of the fiber drawing condition.
