  • Recently, broadband access networks have been competitively deployed all over the world with the development of various multimedia services for such a network. ETRI(Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) built the FTTH(Fiber-to-the-Home) service center to develop a next-generation equipment and a high-quality service/platform as well as to promote domestic industry in the field of optical communication. The FTTH service center has a variety of test equipments such as FTTH standard testbed for a BMT(Bench Mark Test), a network operation center, and IPTV service equipments. Also, ETRI deployed a new type of commercial optical access networks cooperating with ISP(Internet service provider). In this paper, we analyzed the quality degradation appeared in QoE(Quality of Experience), when IP data broadcasted from the FTTH service center is transmitted to subscribers through the commercial optical access network. Moreover, we proposed a noble solution to address this problem.

  • In this paper, we newly propose the optical CDMA routing scheme for the radio access network. At the radio base station (RBS), the received radio signals are multiplied by the PN codes and converted to the CDMA radio signals. In the next optical CDMAS are performed and multiplxed by using the PN codes which are the addresses of the routing mobile switching center (MSC). At the MSC, the CDMA radio signals are routined to another MSC by the CDM receiver at the routing node. In the case MSC is equal to the desired MSC, the radio signal is correlated by the two-layerd spectrum despreading at a time. Finally we theoretically analyze the signal-to-interference and noise power ratio of regenerated signal and the routing error probability and show the availability of proposed scheme.

  • We propose a multi-rate and multi-BEP transmission scheme using adaptive overlapping pulse-position modulator (OPPM) and optical power controller in optical code division multiple access (CDMA) networks. The proposed system achieves the multi-rate and multi-BEP transmission by accommodating users with different values of OPPM parameter and transmitted power in the same network. The proposed scheme has advantages that the system is not required to change the code length and number of weight depending on the required bit rate of a user and the difference of bit rates does not have so much effect on the bit error probabilities (BEPs). Moreover, the difference of transmitted powers does not cause the change of bit rate. We analyze the BEPs of the four multimedia service classes corresponding to the combinations of high/low-rates and low/high-BEPs and show that the proposed scheme can easily achieve distinct differentiation of the service classes with the simple system configuration.

  • An optical fiber code-division multiple-access (CDMA) network is proposed in which encoding is based on the use of concatenated sequences of relatively large weight. The first short component sequence in the concatenated sequence permits realistic electronic encoding of each data bit. The chips of this sequence are then all-optically encoded at substantially higher rate. In spite of the relatively large weight of the sequence the all-optical encoder is practical by virtue of the shortness of the component sequences. The use of Gold and Lempel sequences as component sequences for generating the concatenated sequences is studied and the bit-error rate (BER) performance of the proposed system is presented as a function of the received optical power with the number of simultaneous users as parameter.

  • With the explosive growth of internet data traffic due to the FTTH penetration, prevalence of smart devices and cloud network service, the demand for higher bandwidth is ever increasing with the pace of more than 40% annual growth. To accommodate ultra high bandwidth traffic, optical components in each hierarchy have progressed rapidly. WDM has begun to be deployed along with higher bandwidth service in the access network. Next-generation ROADM is under development for efficient network management in the metro network. For long-haul transmission, an advanced modulation scheme based on coherent transmission technology has been adopted to enhance spectral efficiency. In this paper, core components to meet the demands of high speed, high efficiency and low power consumption will be reviewed.

  • An Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is a low-cost, high-speed solution to the bottleneck problem of a broadband access network. This paper analyzes the delay and the jitter performance of dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) schemes for differentiated services in EPONs. Especially, the average packet delay and the delay jitter of the expedited forwarding (EF) traffic class are compared, with consideration as to whether a cyclic or an interleaved polling scheme is superior. This performance evaluation reveals that the cyclic polling based DBA scheme provides constant and predictable average packet delay and improved jitter performance for the EF traffic class without the influence of load variations.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient sequencing technique, namely minimum Row time scheduling (MFTS), to manage variable-Iength message transmissions for single-hop passive starcoupled WDM optical networks. By considering not only the message length but also the state of the receivers and the tuning latency, the proposed protocol can reduce the average delay of the network greatly. This paper also introduces a new channel assignment technique latency minimizing scheduling (LMS), which aims to reduce the scheduling latency. We evaluate the proposed algorithm, using extensive discrete-event simulations, by comparing its performance with shortest job first (SJF) algorithm. We find that significant improvement in average delay could be achieved by MFTS algorithm. By combining the proposed message sequencing technique with the channel selection technique, the performance of the optical network could be further improved.

  • It has been known that the optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) is a prominent future technology to support many simultaneous users and to increase transmission capacity of optical fiber. In this paper, we proposed the new construction of 2 dimensional code, which can be used as a codeword in temporal/wavelength OCDMA networks. New code family is obtained by extending the concept of Hamming correlation. All optical encoder and decoder for newly proposed code were also developed. In considering bit error ratio, we verified that new coding scheme outperforms conventional coding scheme by simulation. This system is applicable to asynchronous fast local area network, which needs a high security level and a flexible network configuration.

  • In this paper, we propose an optimal 2-dimensional construction algorithm of a code family for a high-speed optical code division multiple access network. The optimal 2-D code family generated by search algorithm has better spectrum efficiency than previous codes, having relatively many code sets with short code length and the same or lower BER. Using the optimal 2-D code, OCDMA systems make it possible to utilize the spectrum more efficiently than WDM systems. The probability of bit error for high-speed OCDMA transmissions is calculated as a function of the number of users in the presence of receiver and shot noise(additive white Gaussian noise).

  • With the advent of the 5G era, the rapid growth in demand for mobile content services has increased the need for additional backhaul investment. To meet this demand, employing a content delivery network (CDN) and optical access solution near the last mile has become essential for the configuration of 5G networks. In this paper, a cache-enabled architecture using the passive optical network (PON) is presented to serve video on demand (VoD) for users. For efficient use of mobile backhaul, I propose a request deduplication scheme (RDS) that can provide all the requested services missed in cache with minimum bandwidth by eliminating duplicate requests for movies within tolerable range of the quality of service (QoS). The performance of the proposed architecture is compared with and without RDS in terms of the number of requests arriving at the origin server (OS), hit ratio, and improvement ratio according to user requests and cache sizes.
