The Relationship between Earnings Management and Future Firm Performance in Public Institutions (공공기관의 이익조정과 미래 경영성과와의 관련성)

  • Earnings management is a collection of management decisions which firms do not report the true performance. Many prior studies suggest that earnings management could be the results of either managerial earnings management or manager's private information for future performance. This study attempts to delve into the fundamental implications inherent in earnings management by analyzing how earnings management affects future firm performance in public institutions. If discretionary accruals as a measurement of earnings management embrace manager's private information, it will have a positive effect on future performance in succeeding period. In contrast, if discretionary accruals embrace manager's opportunistic earnings management, it will have a negative effect on future performance in succeeding period. Empirical findings are summarized as following.: Earnings managements are negatively associated with future firm performance for all succeeding period. This negative relationship continues for all succeeding period. The overall results can be serve as a evidence that the discretionary accruals capture opportunistic earnings management on average.

Real Earnings Management and Persistence of Firm Value: Evidence from India

  • The present study aims to examine the impact of real earnings management on the future value of the firm and its persistence. The study also tests suspect firm effects on the relationship between real earnings management and the future value of the firm. The sample of the present study consists of all listed non-financial firms from the year 2011 to 2018. Real earnings management has been measured in three alternative ways viz., abnormal operating cash flows, abnormal discretionary spending, and abnormal production cost. Tobin's Q is used as a measure of firm value. The interaction term of real earnings management and Tobin's Q is used to test firm value persistence. The results of the analysis disclose that out of three measures of real earnings management, abnormal reduction in discretionary spending only has a significant negative impact on the persistence of firm value. Moreover, the suspect firm analysis reveals that when the underlying motive of real earnings management is to meet zero earnings, both abnormal increases in operating cash flows and abnormal reduction in discretionary spending have a significant negative impact on firm value persistence.

The Effects of Cost Stickiness on Real Earnings Management: A Data Analysis of Export Marketers

  • Purpose - Export marketers may have incentives to attempt real earnings management to avoid low reported earnings. Therefore, we attempted to verify the relationship between cost stickiness and real earnings management in the context of export marketing. Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected from exporters that settle-accounts in December excluding financial businesses listed on the stock market from 2015 to 2019. Multiple regression analysis were employed to analyze the data. Findings - The results showed that there is a negative relationship between cost stickiness and real earnings management. In addition, the results showed that export marketers little attempt to offset the cost inefficiency caused by the increase in expense because of cost stickiness with opportunistic management activities through real earnings management. Rather, as the level of real earnings management appears lower, exporters showing cost stickiness are expected to report management performance based on actual marketing. Furthermore, exporters with a high level of managerial centrality or high managerial overconfidence little attempt to offset cost inefficiency caused by cost stickiness with real earnings management activities. Research implications or Originality - Our study is the first to investigate the quality of earnings information of exporters with cost stickiness. Based on the results, we suggested efficient marketing strategies for exporters.

Past Performance and Earnings Management: The Effect of Free Cash Flow

  • The main objective of this study is to discuss the effect of free cash flow as a moderating variable on managers' decisions as regard earnings management. Companies with free cash flow are expected to refrain from taking opportunistic actions such as earnings management. The research used quantitative methods with sub-group moderating analysis. It is found that there is a significant relationship between past performance and earnings management, where the free cash flow is the moderating variable. The effect of past performance on earnings management is shown to slightly increase as free cash flow is considered. The findings of this study prove that earnings management is a practice that is often done by utilizing the flexibility of accounting recording and recognition mechanisms. Past performance becomes the main variable in encouraging managers to manage earnings by reducing revenue in the current period. This research can also be a reference in explaining managerial behavior and can be a reference to improving ethical human resource capabilities. This research focuses on companies in Indonesia that conduct earnings management by lowering profits as a result of declining past performance and examines aspects of free cash flow that reinforces the conduct of earnings management.

The Strategic Financial Reporting: Evidence from Directors' and Officers' Liability Insurance (전략적 재무보고: 임원배상책임보험제도를 이용한 연구)

  • This study investigates the association between financial reporting strategy and the directors' and officers' liability insurance. Since D&O insurance protects officers and directors against the risks of shareholder litigation, it is possible that, because of moral hazard, managers will be more willing to participate in opportunistic financial reporting such as earnings manipulation when they are covered by a generous D&O insurance policy. This paper examines the association between D&O insurance and financial reporting, specifically whether the purchase of D&O insurance affects earnings manipulation. On the other side, the firms engage earnings management are willing to purchase D&O insurance, this study tests whether earnings manipulation affects D&O purchases using listed firms in Korean stock market from 2006 to 2008. This paper finds that firms with higher discretionary accruals are less likely to purchase D&O insurance implies that managers who are participating in earnings manipulation are not willing to purchase D&O insurance. The relation between discretionary accruals and D&O is significantly negative which indicate D&O insurance purchase does not trigger earnings manipulation rather it alleviates opportunistic reporting behavior.

  • Earnings management is very important for companies that aim for decision-making. The research was conducted to analyze the quality of earnings and income smoothing motives in manufacturing companies in Indonesia. The research approach is carried out with a quantitative approach. The sampling method using purposive sampling was associated with several criteria so that a sample of 130 was determined, which was analyzed during the 4 years of the study. The partial least square method was used for data analysis. The results of the study state that institutional ownership has no effect on earnings quality, institutional ownership has a negative effect on income smoothing, leverage has a negative effect on income smoothing, independent commissioners have a positive effect on earnings quality as well as independent commissioners have a positive effect on income smoothing. We assume that the tendency of income smoothing can affect the quality of efficient earnings. Meanwhile, income smoothing affects the quality of company earnings. Management that performs income smoothing is more aimed at conveying the company's prospects for generating profits rather than opportunistic motives.

  • This study aims to find empirical evidence of the effect of increasing income on the potential transfer of wealth from manufacturing companies that go public to stakeholders. Earnings management with an accrual approach with the Modified Jones model is an identifier of the availability of earnings management practices, without paying attention to both positive and negative symbols. The interpretation of the results of the discretionary accrual measurement between positive and negative symbols has different meanings. Positive discretionary accruals indicate that management uses income-increasing techniques. Meanwhile, negative discretionary accruals indicate that management uses income-reducing techniques. Income-increasing techniques tend to be viewed as opportunistic behavior of managers. This study used 111 data from manufacturing companies listed on the IDX (Indonesia Stock Exchange) from 2015-2018. Path analysis is used to test the hypothesis. The results of this study are in line with the point of view of management strategy, increasing income is used as a way to transfer potential welfare from the company to stakeholders. Social welfare (tax) and managerial remuneration are proven to be mediators in increasing the effect of increasing income on future company value. Further research can complete the potential welfare transfer against the shareholders related to income-increasing strategy.

Does Audit Matter in Earnings Quality of Indonesia Banks?

  • This study investigates and analyzes the difference in Indonesian banks' earnings quality in the pre-audit and post-audit period. This study also investigates the difference in audit quality done by public accounting firms. This study employs time series data taken from the unaudited and audited financial statements of banks listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2012-2016. Sample selection is made by using a purposive sampling method. The population of this study is 43 banks, and after checking the data for validity and reliability, the final sample size was 26 banks. Audit quality is operationalized with the size of the auditor. Earnings quality is proxied by accruals calculated using the Beaver and Engel (1996) model. The data analysis method used in this study is the paired-sample t-test and chow test. This study shows that there is no difference in earnings quality in the pre-audit and post-audit period. This study also reveals no difference in audit quality between the big four and non-big four auditors. These findings mean that independent auditors do not play a useful role in increasing the reliability of accounting information presented by management to stakeholders. Besides, this study's results do not verify the agency theory regarding auditors' role to minimize opportunistic management behavior in preparing financial statements.

Earnings Management and Division System in the KOSDAQ Market (코스닥소속부제와 이익조정)

  • KOSDAQ market reorganized their division system from two types to four types of division departments such as blue chip, venture, medium, and technology development departments in 2011. However, under the current new division system, financially unhealthy firms attempting to take advantage of the classifying opportunity of blue chip department are likely to engage in pernicious earnings management. The objective of this study is to investigate the earnings management behavior surrounding the time of KOSDAQ firms entering the blue chip department via new division system. More specifically, we test whether the firms classified blue chip department tend to engage in upward earnings management using accruals and real activities before and after they achieve blue chip status. In this study, we analyzed 111 firms classified blue chip department in 2011 according to new division system in KOSDAQ market. Major test results indicate that firms entering the blue chip department according to current KOSDAQ division system in general, tend to inflate reported earnings by means both of accruals and real activities right before the entering year. This result suggests that the firms classified blue chip department engage in opportunistic earnings management with a view to uplifting their market values. Our study is expected to provide clues useful for searching policy directions which intend to ameliorate adverse side effects of the current KOSDAQ division system. In sum, the regulatory authorities and enforcement bodies need to exercise caution in deliberating more stringent review procedures so that financially healthy and promising candidates are properly segregated from their poor and risky counterparts, thus enhancing the beneficial effects, while mitigating adverse side effects of the system.

  • To many, recent allegations of earnings management at Enron, coupled with similar ones at many other corporations, are a strong indication of a serious decay in business ethics. Nevertheless, the field of Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR) has grown exponentially in the last decade. This study investigates the effects of CSR on earnings management. Different to precedent works which focus on Financial Performance, this study attempts to provide empirical evidence for relevance of CSR and Discretionary Accruals(DA). The study used variables in the sustainability report, and DA for its earning management too progress empirical analysis because it is believed that the measurement of accounting transparency is highly related to the CEO's opportunistic selection of the accounting. In terms of Sustainable management activities, Employee training time(ETT) is significantly and negatively associated with Discretionary accruals(DA). And also Industrial Accidents Ratio(IAR) is significantly and negatively associated with Discretionary accruals. Consequently, empirical results suggest that Discretionary accruals associated with the company's CSR activities, such as ETT, and IAR. In this study, there are limitation of generalizations and omitted variable problem.
