The purposes of this study were to analyze chemistry problem solving processes of middle school students and to compare their problem solving behaviors in the aspects of the cognitive developmental level of student, the success in problem solving, and the context of problem. Their failures in solving problems were also analyzed in the aspects of problem solving stage and prior knowledge. Forty-two students individually solved four problems regarding density and solubility using a think-aloud method. Students' responses were analyzed after intercoder agreement for analyzing problem-solving processes had been established to be 0.94. The results were as follows: 1. Most students solved chemistry problems following the stages of understanding, planning, and solving, while few exhibited the behaviors of the reviewing stage. There was also individual difference in the number of the stages repeated and their behaviors at each stage. 2. Most students were successful in understanding problems. However, unsuccessful and/or concrete-operational students had more difficulties in understanding problems than successful and/or formal-operational students, and students tended to have more difficulties in understanding problems in everyday contexts than in scientific contexts. 3. Successful and/or formal-operational students exhibited more behaviors of the planning stage than unsuccessful and/or concrete-operational students. Students showed more behaviors of the planning stage, but failed more at this stage, in everyday contexts than in scientific contexts. 4. Most students did not review their solutions. Successful and/or formal-operational students exhibited these behaviors more than unsuccessful and/or concrete-operational students. Students tended to exhibit the behaviors more in everyday contexts than in scientific contexts. 5. Many students failed to solve problems correctly due to the lack of prior knowledge and the inability to plan appropriately.
It is difficult to determine an optimal inventory level of aircraft engine and modules to achieve the target operational availability since F100-PW-200 & 229 engines of the F-16 & KF-16 aircraft are consisted of 5 modules with different failure rates and costs. This study presents a decision model, combining an integer programming problem and a regression metamodel. Data for the metamodel was attained from results of a simulation model, that represents operational and repair process of F-16 and KF-16. The objective function of an integer programming problem is maximizing the operational availability, representing pessimistic circumstances. Finally, an integer programming problem with a metamodel can make an optimal decision of the inventory level.
The efficiency of transportation requests fulfillment can be increased through extending the problem of vehicle routing and scheduling by the possibility of subcontracting a part of the requests to external carriers. This problem extension transforms the usual vehicle routing and scheduling problems to the more general integrated operational transportation problems. In this contribution, we analyze the motivation, the chances, the realization, and the challenges of the integrated operational planning and report on experiments for extending the plain Vehicle Routing Problem to a corresponding problem combining vehicle routing and request forwarding by means of different sub-contraction types. The extended problem is formalized as a mixed integer linear programming model and solved by a commercial mathematical programming solver. The computational results show tremendous costs savings even for small problem instances by allowing subcontracting. Additionally, the performed experiments for the operational transportation planning are used for an analysis of the decision on the optimal fleet size for own vehicles and regularly hired vehicles.
In this paper we consider the CSP requirements determination problem of new equipment(machine) system. For the newly procured equipment systems, mathematical analyses are made for the system which is constructed with the consumable parts to derive the associated CSP requirement determination model in mathematical expression. Based on these analyses, a mathematical model is derived for making an optimal CSP requirement determination subject to tile constraint of satisfying any given operational availability limitation. We assume that the failure of a part follows a Poisson process. Firstly, the operational availability concept in CSP is defined and the relation between the general system availability and the operational availability is established. Secondly, the problem is formulated as the cost minimization problem that should satisfy the operational availability limitation, and then, using the generalized Lagrange multipliers method, the optimal solution procedure is derived.

Based on these analyses, a mathematical model Is derived for making an optimal CSP requirement determination subject to the constraint of satisfying any given operational availability limitation. There are three basic modes of operation of ships: liner, tramp and industrial operations. Industrial operations, where the owner of the cargo, i.e. the industrial carrier controls the ships, abound in the shipment of bulk commodities, such as oil, chemicals and ores. Industrial carriers strive to minimize the shipping cost of their cargoes. This paper is concerned with the operational optimization problem of a fleet owned by major international oil company. The major oil company is a holding corporation for a group of oil producing, transporting, refining, and marketing companies located in various countries throughout the world. The operational optimization problem of the fleet is divided into two-phases. The front end corresponds to the optimization of transporting crude oil, product mix, and the distribution of product oil to meet market demand. The back end tackles the operational optimization problem of the fleet to meet the transportation demand derived from the front end. A case study is carried out with the H major oil company problem composed by reflecting the practices of an international major oil company. The results are summarized and examined in the point of optimization for the total operation of the H major oil company and the operational optimization problem of the fleet. The paper concludes with the remark that the results of the study might be useful and applicable in practices of these related decision problems.
The industrial operation is one of the three basic modes of shipping operation with liner and Tramp operations. Industrial operators usually control vessels of their own or on a time charter to minimize the cost of shipping their cargoes. Such operations abound in shipping of bulk commodities, such as oil, chemicals and ores. This work is concerned with an operational optimization analysis of the fleet owned by a major oil company. a typical industrial operator. The operational optimization problem of the fleet of a major oil company is divided Into two phase problem. The front end corresponds to the optimization problem of the transportation of crude oil. product mix. and the distribution of product oil to comply with the demand of the market. The back end tackles the scheduling optimization problem of the fleet to meet the seaborne transportation demand derived from the front end. A case study reflecting the practices of an international major oil company is demonstrated to make clear the underlying ideas.
In this paper we consider the CSP requirements determination problem of new equipment system. The CSP we deal with in the paper are restricted to the demand-based spare parts. For the newly procured equipment systems, mathematical analyses are made for the system which is constructed with the repairable items to derive the associated CSP requirement determination model in mathematical expression, respectively. Based on these analyses, a mathematical model is derived for making an optimal CSP requirement determination subject to the constraint of satisfying any given funds limitation. We assume that the failure of a part follows a Poisson process. Firstly, the operational availability concept in CSP is defined and the relation between the general system availability and the operational availability is established. Secondly, the problem is formulated as the operational availability maximization problem that should satisfy the funds limitation, and then, using the generalized Lagrange multipliers method, the optimal solution procedure is derived.
In this paper, we presented a new algebraic iterative algorithm for the optimal control of the nonlinear systems. The algorithm is based on two steps. The first step transforms nonlinear optimal control problem into a sequence of linear optimal control problem using the quasilinearization method. In the second step, TPBCP(two point boundary condition problem) is solved by algebraic equations instead of differential equations using the new integral operational matrix of BPF(block pulse functions). The proposed algorithm is simple and efficient in computation for the optimal control of nonlinear systems and is less error value than that by the conventional matrix. In computer simulation, the algorithm was verified through the optimal control design of synchronous machine connected to an infinite bus.

Integration of wind generators with the conventional power plants will raise operational challenges to the electric power utilities due to the uncertainty of wind availability. Thus, the Generation Scheduling (GS) among the online generating units has become crucial. This process can be formulated mathematically as an optimization problem. The GS problem of wind integrated power system is inherently complex because the formulation involves non-linear operational characteristics of generating units, system and operational constraints. As the robust tool is viable to address the chosen problem, the modern bio-inspired algorithm namely, Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm is chosen as the main optimization tool. The intended algorithm is implemented on the standard test systems and the attained numerical results are compared with the earlier reports. The comparison clearly indicates the intended tool is robust and a promising alternative for solving GS problems.
