  • One-way hash chains are important cryptographic primitives and have been used as building blocks of various cryptographic applications. Advantages of one-way hash chains are their simplicity and efficiency for generation based on low-powered processors with short time. However, a drawback of one-way hash chains is their difficulty of control to compute interval values of one-way hash chains. That is, when hash values in one-way hash chain are used as encryption keys, if one hash value is compromised, then the attacker can compute other encryption keys from the compromised hash value. Therefore, direct use of one-way hash chains as encryption keys is limited to many cryptographic applications, such as pay per view system and DRM system. In this paper, we propose a new concept which is called interval hash chain using a hash function. In particular, proposed hash chains are made for only computing interval hash values by using two different one-way hash chains. The proposed scheme can be applied to contents encryption scheme for grading and partially usable contents in DRM system.

  • An ad hoc network is a collection of mobile nodes without any Infrastructure. However, ad hoc networks are vulnerable to attacks such as routing disruption and resource consumption; thus, routing protocol security is needed This paper proposes a secure and efficient routing protocol for mobile ad hoc networks, where only one-way hash function are used to authenticate nodes in the ROUTE REQUEST, while additional public-key cryptography is used to guard against active attackers disguising a node in the ROUTE REPLY.

  • Cryptographic hash functions are also called one-way functions and they ensure the integrity of communication data and command by detecting or blocking forgery. Also hash functions can be used with other security protocols for signature, authentication, and key distribution. The SHA-1 was widely used until it was found to be cryptographically broken by Wang, et. al, 2005. For this reason, NIST launched the SHA-3 competition in November 2007 to develop new secure hash function by 2012. Many SHA-3 hash functions were proposed and currently in review process. To choose new SHA-3 hash function among the proposed hash functions, there have been many efforts to analyze the cryptographic secureness, hardware/software characteristics on each proposed one. However there are few research efforts on the SHA-3 from the point of power consumption, which is a crucial metric on hardware module. In this paper, we analyze the power consumption characteristics of the SHA-3 hash functions when they are made in the form of ASIC hardware module. Also we propose power efficient hardware architecture on Luffa, which is strong candidate as a new SHA-3 hash function. Our proposed low power architecture for Luffa achieves 10% less power consumption than previous Luffa hardware architecture.

  • Since nowadays mobile phone messages are flourishing, the application of electronic coupon (e-coupon) will become a trend for mobile users. E-coupon for mobile commerce can provide mobility for users and distribution flexibility for issuers. In this paper, we propose a mobile e-coupon system that just applies some simple cryptographic techniques, such as one-way hash function and XOR operation. In our system, the customer can control the number of issued e-coupons and the issuer can prevent them from double-redeeming. The customer does not need to perform any exponential computation in redeeming and transferring the coupons. Our scheme uses one-way hash chains for preventing from double-spending.

  • A lot of researches have done for WSN(Wireless Sensor Networks) authentication. Those are divided by whether using certificates or not for the authentication. In this paper, we proposed certificateless protocol. As simplifying the process of authentication, overall the process become faster and the load of the sensor node is decreased. Using the method we proposed, the energy consumption is decreased. That is because instead using keyed hash authentication code(HMAC) simple one way hash function was used. The study confirmed that it could operate on sensor nodes with extremely limited resources and low processing power.

  • To operate safely VANET applications, authenticaton is necessary to identify val d participants and prevent malicious parties from modifying messages. This paper proposes an efficient authentication protocol for the vehicle registration in VANET environment. The topology of VANET changes rapidly due to high-speed movement of vehicles, thus it is need to reduce the computational burden of the authentication protocol. Therefore, this protocol uses only one-way hash functions and EOR operations to register vehicles.

  • The ID/password method is the most classical method among authentication techniques on the internet, and is performed more easily and successfully than other methods. However, it is a vulnerable method against attacks such as eavesdropping or replay attack. To overcome this problem, OTP technique is used. The most popular OTP is HOTP algorithm, which is based on one-way hash function SHA-1. As recent researches show the weakness of the hash function, we need a new algorithm to replace HOTP. In this paper we propose a new OTP algorithm using the MAC(Message Authentication Code) based on AES. We also show that the new OTP outperforms HOTP experimentally.

  • The user's password must be encrypted one-way through the hash function and stored in the database. Widely used hash functions such as MD5 and SHA-1 have also been found to have vulnerabilities, and hash functions that are considered safe can also have vulnerabilities over time. Salt enhances password security by adding it before or after the password before putting it to the hash function. In the case of the existing Salt, even if it is randomly assigned to each user, once it is assigned, it is a fixed value in a specific column of the database. If the database is exposed to an attacker, it poses a great threat to password cracking. In this paper, we suggest variable-dynamic Salt that dynamically changes according to the user's password during the login process. The variable-dynamic Salt can further enhance password security during login process by making it difficult to know what the Salt is, even if the database or source code is exposed.

  • Protecting privacy is an important goal in designing location-based services. Service providers want to verify legitimate users and allow permitted users to enjoy their services. Users, however, want to preserve their privacy and prevent tracking. In this paper, a new framework providing users with more privacy and anonymity in both the authentication process and the querying process is proposed. Unlike the designs proposed in previous works, our framework benefits from a combination of three important techniques: k-anonymity, timed fuzzy logic, and a one-way hash function. Modifying and adapting these existing schemes provides us with a simpler, less complex, yet more mature solution. During authentication, the one-way hash function provides users with more privacy by using fingerprints of users' identities. To provide anonymous authentication, the concept of confidence level is adopted with timed fuzzy logic. Regarding location privacy, spatial k-anonymity prevents the users' locations from being tracked. The experiment results and analysis show that our framework can strengthen the protection of anonymity and privacy of users by incurring a minimal implementation cost and can improve functionality.

  • General RFID system has assumed that the communication channel between reader and back-end database is secure channel. However, the reader can be communicated with the database through insecure channel like the communication channel between the reader and the tag according to application environment. In this paper, we propose a new secure RFID mutual authentication protocol based on open network channel which assumed that all communication channels between the database, the reader and the tag are insecure communication channels. The proposed protocol uses a secure one-way hash function to provide authentication and integrity against all communication messages which exchanged on the open channels. In addition, we designed that the proposed protocol can provide forward secrecy by performing the database and the tag update their old secret key with a new secret key after finished mutual authentication.
