This paper presents the experimetal result on the viscoplastic response and collapse of the titanium alloy tubes subjected to cyclic bending. Based on the capacity of the bending machine, three different curvature-rates were used to highlight the viscoplastic behavior of the titanium alloy tubes. The Curvature-controlled experiments were conducted by the curvature-ovalization measurement apparatus which was designed by Pan et al. (1998). It can be observed from experimental data that the higher the applied curvature-rate, the greater is the degree of hardening of titanium alloy tube. However, the higher the applied curvature-rate, the greater is the degree of ovalization of tube cross-section. Furthermore, due to the greater degree of the ovalization of tube cross-section for higher curvature-rates under cyclic bending, the number of cycles to produce buckling is correspondingly reduced. Finally, the theoretical formulation, proposed by Pan and Her (1998), was modified so that it can be used for simulating the relationship between the controlled curvature and the number of cycles to produce buckling for titanium alloy tubes under cyclic bending with different curvature-rates. The theoretical simulation was compared with the experimental test data. Good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results has been achieved.
To investigate the relationships of solder joint characteristics with solder composition and A:V ratio (solder volume per pad area), Sn-37Pb and Sn-4.0Ag-0.5Cu solder balls with 330, 400, 450 and $457{\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ size were reflowed on same substrate. Sn-37Pb and Sn-4.0Ag-0.5Cu was reflowed at $220^{\circ}C$ and $240^{\circ}C$ respectively by IR-type soldering machine. As a result of reflowed solder- ball diameter(D) and height(H) measurement, D/H was decreased with solder ball size increment in range of 330~450 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. But, D/H was increased in the solder joint for 457 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ size, it was caused possibly by decrement of solder ball height increment compared with solder volume increment. As a result of shear and pull test, joint strength with A:V ratio was high. Joint strength of Sn-4.0Ag-0.5Cu was higher than Sn-37Pb. However, Sn-37Pb had more stable solder joint of small standard deviation. A thick and clean scallop type Ni-Cu-Sn intermetallic compound layer was formed in high A:V ratio and Sn-4.0Ag-0.5Cu solder joint interface.
Recently, people's attention and worries about fine particulate matter have been increasing. Due to the construction and maintenance costs, there are insufficient air quality monitoring stations. As a result, people have limited information about the concentration of fine particulate matter, depending on the location. Studies have been undertaken to estimate the fine particle concentrations in areas without a measurement station. Yet there are limitations in that the estimate cannot take account of other factors that affect the concentration of fine particle. In order to solve these problems, we propose a framework for estimating the concentration of fine particulate matter of a specific area using meteorological data and traffic data. Since there are more grids without a monitor station than grids with a monitor station, we used a domain adversarial neural network based on the domain adaptation method. The features extracted from meteorological data and traffic data are learned in the network, and the air quality index of the corresponding area is then predicted by the generated model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method performs better as the number of source data increases than the method using conditional random fields.
In this work, tool holder system has been designed and builted to measure cutting forces in diamond turning. This system design includes a 3-component piezo-electric tranducer. Initial experiments with tool holder system included verification of its predicted dynamic characteristics as well as a detailed study of cutting parameters. Tool holder system is modeled by considering the element dividing, material properties, and boundary conditions using MSC/PATRAN. Mode and frequency analysis of structure is simulated by MSC/NASTRAN, for the purpose of developing the effective design. Many cutting experiments have been conducted on 6061-T6 aluminum. Tests have involved investigation of velocity effects, and the effects of depth and feedrate on tool force. Forces generally increase with increasing depth of cut. Increasing feedrate does not necessarily lead to higher forces.
For NIR measurements of papers normally diffuse reflectance accessories are used which can provide a large sampling area. The in-line process control FT-NIR spectrometer MATRIX-E enables the contactless measurement of paper samples of low silicone coat weights on label-stocks in a paper converting factory. For this study concentrations of silicone between 0 and 2 g/$m^2$ on various paper substrates were included in a quantitative method. The aim was to achieve an absolute value for the deviation from the target value of 1 g/$m^2$ during continuous movement of the paper with velocities around 400 numinute. Influences from the uncoated paper type due to supplier, color, opacity, area densities, pre-coating as well as different compounds of the agent silicone were investigated and it was found that all these papers can be represented in one PLS-model. Especially the fact that silicone as an element is present in clay coated papers is of no consequence to the measurements with MATRIX-E. Moreover during in-line installations the variation of the moisture contents in the moving paper due to variable machine velocities as well as the reflecting material of the cylinder have to be considered. It is shown that the result of the in-line calibration has the same prediction ability compared to lab scale results(Root Mean Square Error of Cross-Validation RMSECV = 0.034 g/$m^2$).

A cylindrical capacitance-type spindle displacement sensor was developed and its effectiveness as a system to monitor cutting forces during hard turning was tested in this research. The sensor was installed between the face of spindle cover and the chucking element and measured pure radial motion of the spindle under the condition with presence of roundness error at measured surface. To prove the effectiveness of the developed system hard aiming tests using ceramic inserts and tool steel as workpiece were conducted. The workpiece was hardened up to 65 Rc. The variations of pure radial motion of the spindle ware measured during the cutting tests. The signals from the sensor showed the same pattern of cutting force variations from the tool dynamometer due to the progress of tool wear. As the flank wear of the ceramic tool increased both static component of cutting forces and the amount of center shift of spindle orbit increased, Results from the research showed that the developed sensor could be utilized as an effective and cheap on-line sensing device to monitor cutting conditions and tool performance in the un-manned machining center.
The control of diamond turning is usually achieved through a laser-interferometer feedback of slide position. If the tool post is rigid and the material removal process is relatively static, then such a non-collocated position feedback control scheme may surface. However, as the accuracy requirement gets tighter and desired surface contours become more complex, the need for a direct tool-tip sensing becomes inevitable. The physical constraints of the machining process prohibit any reasonable implementation of a tool-tip motion measurement. It is proposed that the measured force normal to the face of the workpiece can be filtered through an appropriate admittance transfer function to result in the estimated depth of cut. This can be compared to the desired depth of cut to generate the adjustment control action in addition to position feedback control. In this work, the design methodology on the admittance model-based control with a conventional controller is presented. The recursive least-squares algorithm with forgetting factor is proposed to identify the parameters and update the cutting process in real time. The normal cutting forces are measured to identify the cutting dynamics in the real diamond turning process using the precision dynamometer. Based on the parameter estimation of cutting dynamics and the admittance model-based nanodynamic control scheme, simulation results are shown.

This paper proposes a combination of the Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) and Static Var Compensator (SVC) installation for enhancing the damping performance of a power system. The developed scheme employs a damping controller which coordinates measurement signals with control signals to control the TCSC and SVC. The coordinated control method is based on the application of projective controls. Controller performance over a range of operating conditions is investigated through simulation studies on a single-machine infinite-bus power system. The linear analysis and nonlinear simulation results show that the proposed controller can significantly improve the damping performance of the power system and hence, increase its power transfer capabilities. In this paper, a current injection model of TCSC is developed and incorporated in the transmission system model. By using equivalent injected currents at terminal buses to simulate a TCSC no modification of the bus admittance matrix is required at each iteration.
In this research, a novel sampling strategy for a CMM to inspect freeform surfaces is proposed. Unlike primitive surfaces, it is not easy to determine the number of sampling points and their locations for inspecting freeform surfaces. Since a CMM operates with slower speed in measurement than optical measuring devices, it is important to optimize the number and the locations of sampling points in the inspection process. When a complete inspection of a surface is required, it becomes more critical. Among various factors to cause shape errors of a final product, curvature characteristic is essential due to its effect such as stair-step errors in rapid prototyping and interpolation errors in NC tool paths generation. Shape errors are defined in terms of the average and standard deviation of differences between an original model and a produced part. Proposed algorithms determine the locations of sampling points by analyzing curvature distribution of a given surface. Based on the curvature distribution, a surface area is divided into several sub-areas. In each sub-area, sampling points are located as further as possible. The optimal number of sub-areas. In each sub-area, sampling points are located as further as possible. The optimal number os sub-areas is determined by estimating the average of curvatures. Finally, the proposed method is applied to several surfaces that have shape errors for verification.
