This paper proposes a new phase current reconstruction technique for interleaved three-phase bidirectional dc-dc converters using a single current sensor. In the proposed current reconstruction algorithm, a single current sensor is employed at the dc-link, and the dc-link current information is sampled at either the peak or valley point of the pulse-width modulation (PWM) carriers regularly. From the obtained current information, all phase currents are reconstructed in a single PWM cycle. After that, the digital current controller is applied to achieve current balancing in each phase. Compare to the previous multiple current sensor method, the proposed strategy reduces the number of the current sensors in the interleaved three-phase bidirectional converter as well as reducing potential current sensing error caused by non-ideal characteristics of the multiple current sensors. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified from the experiments based on a 3kW three-phase bidirectional converter prototype for the automotive battery charging application.
The application of large power transformer into a power distribution system was inevitable due to the increase of power demand and distributed generation. However, the decrease of the power transformer's impedance caused the short-circuit current of the power distribution system to be increase thus, the higher short-circuit current exceeded the cut-off ratings of the protective devices such as circuit breaker. To solve these problems, several countermeasures have been proposed to protect the power system effectively from higher fault current and the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been expected to be the promising countermeasure. In spite of excellent current limiting performances of the SFCL, on the other hand, the efforts to apply the SFCL into power system has been delayed due to both the limited spaces for the SFCL's installation and its long recovery time after the fault removal. In order to solve these problems, a hybrid SFCL, which can perform either first half cycle limiting of first half cycle non-limiting operation, has been developed by corporation of LSIS (LS Industrial System) and KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation). In this paper, we tried to requirements hybrid SFCL by PSCAD/EMTDC. Simulation results of our analysis of the hybrid SFCL is that its accompanied the characteristics both the limit the fault current and quick recovery caused by the less impact from superconductor.
For grid-connected LCL-filtered inverters, dual-loop current control with an inner-loop active damping (AD) based on capacitor current feedback is generally used for the sake of current quality. However, existing studies on capacitor current feedback AD with a control delay do not reveal the mathematical relation among the dual-loop stability, capacitor current feedback factor, delay time and LCL parameters. The robustness was not investigated through mathematical derivations. Thus, this paper aims to provide a systematic study of dual-loop current control in a digitally-controlled inverter. At first, the stable region of the inner-loop AD is derived. Then, the dual-loop stability and robustness are analyzed by mathematical derivations when the inner-loop AD is stable and unstable. Robust design principles for the inner-loop AD feedback factor and the outer-loop current controller are derived. Most importantly, ensuring the stability of the inner-loop AD is critical for achieving high robustness against a large grid impedance. Then, several improved approaches are proposed and synthesized. The limitations and benefits of all of the approaches are identified to help engineers apply capacitor current feedback AD in practice.
In this paper, how the temperature of a varistor changes when $10/350{\mu}s$ surge currents and/or DC leakage currents are applied on it, respectively, are investigated. The temperature change in varistor is related with injection energy and leakage current. which is the integration of power in time. By the surge current test, we found that the temperature jump is proportional to the level of surge current with slant 52.535 and has no relation with the ambient temperature. And by the DC leakage current test, the difference in temperatures between varistor and ambient is proportional to the magnitude of leakage current. The slope of measured line(the temperature difference vs. the leakage current) shows alteration around $100{\mu}A$. The varistors can not be used more than $100{\mu}A$ region any more. From the above experimental results, we can conclude that data of the surge current test and also those of DC leakage current test can predict the performance of varistors of which the surge protective devices are made.
The development of the frequency converter using semiconductor enables to easily control the speed of A.C. motors. It is now technically possible and economically feasible to provide them with power at variable frequency, using silicon-controlled-rectifier (or thyristor) inverters. In such a case, if an induction motor is to be operated efficiently over a wide speed range, it must be supplied from a variable-frequency source whose frequency is adjustable over a range similar to that required for the motor speed. It is desired to observe how several characteristics are changed such as primary current, torque-speed, etc. Although the characteristics could be obtained by means of the conventional method, it requires very complicated calculation. It is assumed that the charateristics above are easily investigated by means of current diagram method from variable circuit constants relating to the motor which is designed in rated frequency. In this paper, the results of the study on the current-diagram method and its application are described as follows; (1) In order to discuss the construction of current diagram, the equation of the stator current with adjustable frequency was derived for applying the Current Diagram Method. (2) The radius, the center of the current circle and current vector locus at any desired frequency could be easily determined with the aid of both above mentioned equation and the standard current diagram at reference frequency. (3) This method could be applicable to the various types of Induction Motors, and this paper has dealt with its application to the capacitor, split-phase and 2-phase types of motors.

The electrical leakage levels of GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) containing leakage paths are estimated using photoluminescence (PL) and photovoltaic properties under photoexcitation conditions. The PL intensity and open-circuit voltage (VOC) decrease because of carrier leakages depending on photoexcitation conditions when compared with reference values for typical LED chips without leakage paths. Changes of photovoltage-photocurrent characteristics and PL intensity due to carrier leakage are employed to assess the leakage current levels of LEDs with leakage paths. The current corresponding to the reduced VOC of an LED with leakage from the photovoltaic curve of a reference LED without leakage is matched with the leakage current calculated using the PL intensity reduction ratio and short-circuit current of the LED with leakage. The current needed to increase the voltage for an LED with a leakage under photoexcitation from VOC of the LED up to VOC of a reference LED without a leakage is identical to the additional current needed for optical turn-on of the LED with a leakage. The leakage current level estimated using the PL and photovoltaic properties under photoexcitation is consistent with the leakage level measured from the voltage-current characteristic obtained under current injection conditions.

The Active Superconducting Current Controller (ASCC) is a new type of Superconducting Fault Current Limiters (SFCL) which can limit the fault current in different modes. It also has the particular abilities of compensating active and reactive powers for electrical networks. In this paper, it is confirmed that the performance of ASCC in different operating modes introduces a limiting impedance in series with the network which can even degrade the transient stability and the operation of the Over-Current Relays (OCR) employed in a power system. In addition, the model of a three-phase ASCC is simulated, and the effect of descriptive modes on the current limiting level is investigated. For the transient stability analysis, a single machine-infinite bus system is tested, and the effect of operation modes is studied based on an equal area criterion obtaining the critical time and the critical angle. Modifying the setting parameters of OCR such as time dial and pick-up current, the protective coordination is also studied in different operating modes.
When a fault occurs on railway feeders it is very important to detect the fault to protect trains and facilities. Because a DC railway system has low feeder voltage, The fault current can be smaller than the current of load starting. So it is important to discriminate between the small fault current and the load starting current. The load starting current increases step by step but the fault current increases at one time. So the type of $\Delta$I/ relay(50F) was developed using the different characteristics between the load starting current and the fault current. The load starting current increases step by step so the time constant of each step is much smaller than that of the fault current. First, to detect faults in DC railway systems, an algorithm using the time constant calculated by the method of least squares is presented in this paper. If a fault occurs on DC railway systems it is necessary to find a fault location to repair the faulted system as soon as possible. The second aim of the paper is to calculate the accurate fault location using Kirchhoff's voltage law.
The study of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is continuously being studied as a countermeasure for reducing fault-current in the power system. When the fault occurred in the power system, the fault-current was limited by the generated impedance of SFCLs. The operational characteristics of the flux-offset type SFCL according to turn ratios between the primary and the secondary winding of a reactor were compared in this study. We connected the secondary core to a superconductor and a SCR switch in series in the suggested structure. The fault current in the primary and the secondary winding of the reactor and the voltage of the superconductor on the secondary were measured and compared. The results showed that the fault current in the load line was the lowest and the voltage applied at both ends of the superconductor was also low when the secondary winding of the reactor had lower turn ratio than the primary. It was confirmed based on these results that the turn ratio of the secondary winding of the reactor must be designed to be lower than that of the primary winding to reduce the burden of the superconductor and to lower the fault current. Also, the suggested structure could increase the duration of the limited current by limiting the continuous current after the first half cycle from the fault with the fault current limiter.
In automotive industry, applying of Mg alloy to autobody has been issued recently as a light metal. But poor resistance spot weldability of Mg alloy is blocking commercialization. So studies on improving resistance spot weldability of Mg alloy is increasing continuously. For reduce loss of heat input during welding, inverter DC power source is considered because of short rise time to target welding current. But rapid rising of welding current can increase temperature rapidly in nugget and oxide film between electrode and base metal, and that causes generating expulsion on low welding current range. In this study, for increase optimum welding current range and prevent generating expulsion, applicate various types of welding current waveform controls during resistance spot welding. For analysis effects of each current waveform control, acceptable welding current regions according to electrode force and welding time is determined and lobe diagram is derived. In result, pre heat is proposed as optimum type of welding current waveform control.
