Study on signal processing techniques for low power and low complexity IR-UWB communication system using high speed digital sampler (고속 디지털 샘플러 기술을 이용한 저전력, 저복잡도의 초광대역 임펄스 무선 통신시스템 신호처리부 연구)

  • In this paper, signal processing techniques for noncoherent impulse-radio-based UWB (IR-UWB) communication system are proposed to provide system implementation of low power consumption and low complexity. The proposed system adopts a simple modulation technique of OOK (on-oft-keying) and noncoherent signal detection based on signal amplitude. In particular, a technique of a novel high speed digital sampler using a stable, lower reference clock is developed to detect nano-second pulses and recover digital signals from the pulses. Also, a 32 bits Turyn code for data frame synchronization and a convolution code as FEC are applied, respectively. To verify the proposed signal processing techniques for low power, low complexity noncoherent IR-UWB system, the proposed signal processing technique is implemented in FPGA and then a short-range communication system for wireless transmission of high quality MP3 data is designed and tested.

  • This paper presents the application of a turbo coding technique combined with a bandwidth efficient method known as trellis-coded modulation. A transformation applied to the incoming I-channel and Q-channel symbols allows the use of an off-the-shelf binary/quadrature phase shift keying (B/QPSK) turbo decoder without any modifications. A conventional turbo decoder then operates on transformed symbols to estimate the coded bits. The uncoded bits are decoded based on the estimated coded bits and locations of the received symbols.

Analysis of System Performance Degradation Using Sinusoidally Modulated Signal in Optical Fiber Communication Systems

  • The response of a single-mode fiber to a sinusoidally modulated input has been studied to see its utility in measuring system performance in the presence of fiber nonlinearities. The sinusoidally modulated signal models an alternating bit sequence of ones and zeros in on-off keying. The sinusoidal response of normally dispersive fiber shows a strong correlation with eye-opening penalty (EOP) over a wide range of the nonlinearity parameter N (0.1 < N$^2$< 100). This result implies that the measurement of the sinusoidal response can be an alternate way of measuring EOP without having a long sequence of randomly modulated input bits. But in the anomalous dispersion region, the sinusoidal response has a much more limited range of application to estimate system performance.

  • 무선센서네트워크를 위한 무선센서노드는 한정된 전력원을 이용하여 수천에서 수만시간의 동작을 가능하게 해야하므로 초저전력 (Ultra Low Power: ULP) 소모가 매우 중요한 설계 요구조건이 된다. 이를 위해 센서노드의 동작 주기(Duty Cycling)를 제어하는 기법이 전체 전력소모를 줄이는 매우 중요한 기술로 사용되고 있다. 회로의 전력 소모 감소를 위한 몇 가지 중요한 기술에는 회로적으로는 전류 재사용기술과 송수선기 구조로는 Super-regenerative 구조와 On-Off Keying 송수신기 구조가 있다. 또한 ULP Radio가 휴면모드에도 Wake-up을 가능하게 하기 위해서는 초저전력 클락 발생기 회로가 1${\mu}W$이하의 전력소모로 구현할 수 있어야 한다. 이러한 사항들을 적절히 고려함으로써 초저전력 CMOS Radio를 구현할 수 있다.

  • 수십 센티미터 이내의 오차를 만족시키는 거리/위치판별 기능 및 저속 데이터 송수신 기능 구현을 주목적으로 발족된 저속 무선 개인영역 네트워크(LR-WPAN: Low Rate Wireless Personal Area Network)의 표준인 IEEE802.15.4a는 간단하고 경제적이며 전력 소모가 적은 송수신기 구조를 요구한다. 이에 본 논문에서는 PEWB(Parallel Energy Window Banks)를 이용한 독창적인 비동기(noncoherent) OOK(On-Off Keying) UWB(Ultra-Wide Band) 송수신기 구조를 제안한다. 또한 무선 다중경로 채널상황을 다소 극복할 수 있는 펄스와 비트 반복 기법을 사용한다. 제안된 송수신기의 잡음 특성 분석을 위해 chi-square 분포가 사용되며, 반복적 계산을 통해 얻어진 임계값을 적용하여 BER(Bit Error Rate) 성능을 분석한다.

Color Clustered Multiple-input Multiple-output Visible Light Communication

  • A novel color clustered optical RGB multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is presented. As visible light can be divided into three primary regions of red, green and blue, data can be modulated and transmitted separately using these three color clusters. Each color cluster comprised of 30 RGB LEDs is modulated using on-off-keying (OOK), and selection combining is performed at the receiver, producing a diversity effect within that color cluster. The simulations demonstrate that the proposed RGB MIMO VLC system provides high performance via a relatively simple design of MIMO. Moreover, the proposed system ensures sufficient illumination from LEDs and offers extended distance if more LEDs are applied.

An OCDMA Scheme to Reduce Multiple Access Interference and Enhance Performance for Optical Subscriber Access Networks

  • We propose a new optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) scheme for reducing multiple access interference (MAI) and enhancing performance for optical subscriber access networks using modified pseudorandom noise (PN)-coded fiber Bragg gratings with bipolar OCDMA decoders. Through the bipolar OCDMA decoder and the modified PN codes, MAI among users is effectively depressed. As the data are encoded either by a unipolar signature sequence of the modified PN code or its complement according to whether the data bit is 1 or 0, the bit error ratio (BER) can be more improved with the same signal to interference plus noise ratio over the conventional on-off shift keying-based OCDMA system. We prove by numerical analysis that the BER of the proposed bipolar OCDMA system is better than the conventional unipolar OCDMA system. We also analyze the spectral power distortion effects of the broadband light source.

Generation of Coherent Sub-Terahertz Carrier with Phase Stabilization for Wireless Communications

  • In this paper, we present a photonic approach for generating highly stable coherent sub-terahertz (THz) signals for wireless communications. As proof-of-concept we transmit data at 100 GHz carrier frequency using on-off keying modulation and heterodyne detection. The sub-THz carrier signals are generated by photo-mixing two optical carrier signals at different frequencies, extracted from an optical frequency comb. We introduce a novel system to stabilize the phase of the optical carrier signals. Error-free transmission is successfully achieved up to a bit rate of 8.5 Gbit/s at 100 GHz.

  • Recently, IEEE 802.15.4a(low-rate UWB) technique has been paid much attention to the LR-UWB communication system for WPAN. However, there are various interferences such as MPI(Multi Path Interference) or IPI(Inter Piconet Interference) in IEEE 802.15.4a wireless channel. In order to cancel various interferences occurred to WPAN environment, in this paper, we propose a UWB wireless communication system with high QoS(Quality of Service) which is a chaotic-OOK(On-Off Keying) system using unipolar ZCD(Zero Correlation Duration) spreading code in physical layer level. Furthermore, we analyze its performance via simulations and verify the availability of proposed system with prototype implementation.

  • White LEDs(Light Emitting Diode) offer advantageous properties such as high brightness, improved reliability, lower power consumption, and long lifetimes. An LED is an electronic device that converts an electrical signal into a tight signal and is used not only in Optical Communication Indoor wireless optical illuminating rooms, but also for wireless optical communication systems. Currently, studies about these white LEDs have been being progressed, and in this raper, we discuss the multiplex and the multiple access method of VLC(Visible Light Communication) systems using white LEDs. In proposed system, CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access) apples to VLC system to reduce interference of VLC system, and improve capacity. The superiority of OOK modulation is presented in analysis of results by comparing VLC-CDMA communication system using OOK(On-off keying) modulation and BPSK modulation in AWGN(Additive White Gaussian Noise) channel and Diffuse channel. And we investigate the significance of a solution of interference by multipath by comparing BER in multipath channel and AWGN channel. In the proposed system, we assume Directed LOS(Line Of Sight) and Diffuse Link, and suppose VLC-CDMA using OOC(Optical Orthogonal Code) as methods to increase efficiency of system by removing ISI(Inter Symbol Interference) caused by multiple access, optical spreading code, and also present an analysis of its performance.
