  • Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the death of dopaminergic neurons in the nigrostriatal pathway, leading to motor and non-motor dysfunctions, such as depression, olfactory dysfunction, and memory impairment. Although levodopa (L-dopa) has been the gold standard PD treatment for decades, it only relieves motor symptoms and has no effect on non-motor symptoms or disease progression. Prior studies have reported that 6-shogaol, the active ingredient in ginger, exerts a protective effect on dopaminergic neurons by suppressing neuroinflammation in PD mice. This study investigated whether cotreatment with 6-shogaol and L-dopa could attenuate both motor and non-motor symptoms and dopaminergic neuronal damage. Both 6-shogaol (20 mg/kg) and L-dopa (80 mg/kg) were orally administered to 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine/probenecid-induced PD model mice for 26 days. The experimental results showed that L-dopa alleviated motor symptoms, but had no significant effect on non-motor symptoms, loss of dopaminergic neuron, or neuroinflammation. However, when mice were treated with 6-shogaol alone or in combination with L-dopa, an amelioration in both motor and non-motor symptoms such as depression-like behavior, olfactory dysfunction and memory impairment was observed. Moreover, 6-shogaol-only or co-treatment of 6-shogaol with L-dopa protected dopaminergic neurons in the striatum and reduced neuroinflammation in the striatum and substantia nigra. Overall, these results suggest that 6-shogaol can effectively complement L-dopa by improving non-motor dysfunction and restoring dopaminergic neurons via suppressing neuroinflammation.

  • The investigation of electroantennogram (EAG) using insect antennad has been primarily focused on the measurement of insect pheromone. Insect has highly specialized olfactroy receptors inside their antennae. In this paper, EAG was applied to detect general oborants and the feasibility of this system for the olfactroy biosensor was investigated. Electroantennogram measurement was carried out using the antennae of male silkworm moth, bombyx mori, and ammonia gas as the model odorant. EAG parametres including peak ampiltude increased linearly with the ammonia concentration and the reproducible electrical signals were generated at least for 2 hrs after the antenna was cut off from the sulkworm moth.

  • A sensitive surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensor for the detection of odorants has been constructed by depositing different phospholipids and fatty acids on the surface of the SAW device wi th the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. The characteristics of SAW device operating at 310 MHz deposited with phosphatidylcholine were analyzed. Amyl acetate, acetoin, menthone and other organic gases showed different affinities. The identification of odorants depending on the species of lipid used for coating is discussed in terms of the similarity of the normalized resonant frequency shift pattern. Using a number of different lipid-coated SAW devices, odorants could be identified by a neural-network pattern recognition with back-propagation algorithm.

  • Late-onset schizophrenia(LOS) is a controversial entity. It has been thought that onset of schizophrenia is limited to early adulthood, but many European psychiatrists have reported on the occurrence of schizophrenia in late life. DSM-III restricted the diagnosis of schizophrenia to patients with onset of illness before age 45 years. But, DSM-III-R, DSM-IV, and ICD-10 recognize no upper limit to the age at onset of schizophrenia. Patients with LOS have more visual, tactile, and olfactory hallucinations. Patients with LOS have more persecutory delusions, premorbid schizoid personality traits, and less affective blunting. The course of illness was favorable in LOS. We present four cases of LOS. Their detailed clinical features are reported hear with brief review.

  • In this paper, we suggest method that change odors to digital data. For this, we selected emotional adjective of odors as olfactory receptor This emotional adjective(expressional receptor) is about 40. Each odors are expressed by adjective equivalent to oneself. Expressed odors as emotional receptor is encoded as proposed method for transmission, and after transmission, It should be decoded for expression again. The applied decoding method is fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm(FCMA). But, because odor data is expressed to 40 dimensions, FCMA uses a lot of computing times and memories. To solve this problem, after we reduce dimension through principal component analysis(PCA), we use FCMA algorithm.

  • Schwannoma is a relatively rare benign tumor which may occur from nerve sheath of the peripheral, sympathetic and cranial nerves and so on except optic and olfactory nerves which have no nerve sheath themselves. Although it occur most frequently in the head and neck region especially in the acoustic nerve, the schwannoma originated from the motor nerves including hypoglossal nerve is very rare. Recently, we have experienced a case of schwannoma originated from hypoglossal nerve in a 47-year-old female. We report this case with literature review.

  • The heat shock transcription factor (HSF) family consists of at least three members in mammals and regulates expression of heat shock proteins in response to heat shock and proteotoxic stresses. Especially, HSF1 is indispensable for this response. Members of this family are also involved in development of some tissues such as the brain and reproductive organs. However, we did not know the molecular mechanisms that regulate developmental processes. Involvement of HSFs in the sensory development was implicated by the finding that human hereditary cataract is associated with mutations of the HSF4 gene. Analysis of gene-disrupted mice showed that HSF4 and HSF1 are required for the lens and the olfactory epithelium, respectively. Furthermore, a common molecular mechanism that regulates developmental processes was revealed by analyzing roles of HSFs in the two developmentally-related organs.
