  • Many old books concerning agriculture in ancient Korea were published during Yi dynasty, giving information on the agriculture of old and recent times, Present work describes the introduction of tobacco to Korea by reviewing old domestic or foreign agricultural literatures dealing with names of tobacco. Historically, tobacco had been called as many names such as Namcho, Yeoncho, Au, Seocho, Oecho, Hocho, Dampa Ko, Namkyongcho and Dampacke, and known to be introduced to Korea during early part of Kwanghwekun rule (year of 1618) from Japan. However, tobacco introduction from Japan to Korea seemed not be true by 2 historical facts. One is that at old time Japan had imported Chinese and Korean culture, and many crops during Nara and Heyan dynasties. The other is that there is no evidence of Japanese introduction found in Japan nowadays. The most plausible theory on tobacco introduction is that soldiers under General Youjung of Myong dynasty had brought tobacco to Korea during ImJinWaeRan(1592-1598). The above statements can be verified by old stories about Korean local tobacco varieties, and by letters Kim Dae Hyun(1553-1602) and General Youjoung.

  • Muck (Korean traditional starch jelly) is very unique and the one of the oldest starch processing traditional food. The typical ingredients for making muck such as acorns, mungbean and buckwheat have been eaten since the new stone age or even before that era. This study was for investigation on the history of muck and its processing methods in the ancient and the modern culinary literatures from the 1400’s to 1900’s. The summary of the reviews was as follows. In the ages from the 1400’s to 1700’s, using starch powder, Se-myon and Chang-myon were made and their shape were like noodles instead of cubical shape. It was after the 1700’s that muck making methods were revealed in the literature, like ${\ulcorner}Gyeong-do-jabji{\lrcorner}$ (1730) and${\ulcorner}Go-sa-sib-e-jib{\lrcorner}$ (1737). The naming of muck might be from the time after 1800’s, in${\ulcorner}Myoung-mul-kiryak {\lrcorner}$ (around 1870) the basis of the names of Choeng-po (white mungbean jelly) and Whang-po (yellow mungbean jelly) could be found. One of the most well-known muck dish, Tang-pyeong-chae, was recorded many old literatures, so it was found that Tang-pyeong-chae was very popular and governmental policy of Tang-pyeong-chak influenced the food of the common people. In ${\ulcorner}Shi-eui-jeon-seo{\lrcorner}$ (late 1800’s) there were records of several types of muck and starch powder making methods in detail which were handed down to the modern ages.

  • We report a case of severe(gradeV) unilateral vesicoureteral reflux(VUR) without any renal damage in a 6-month-old boy through the early sil)ling screening test for VUR, whose old brother had reflux nephropathy. The early detection of VUR aroused us to take special precautions to prevent urinary tract infection in this patient. We believe that this approach was helpful to reduce the risk of renal damage in this patient and are reporting the case with a brief review of related literatures. It is our firm suggestion that screening for vesicoureteral reflux should be carried out in every child who has siblings with refluf nephrouathy.

  • Solitary plasmacytoma is a rare malignant neoplasm that originate in immunoglobulin-producing plasma cell. Solitary bone plasmacytoma can be found at any site throughout the skeleton and in most cases eventually progresses to multiple myeloma, of which it is thought to be an unusual presentation. On the other hand, extramedullary plasmacytoma has a tendency to occur in the head and neck region, mainly in association with the upper air passages. Incisional biopsy is the primary approach to make a definitive diagnosis, and immunohistochemical staining can be very helpful in understanding the nature of these tumors. We report a 66 years old patient with solitary bone plasmacytoma and a 36 years old patient with solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma with literatures review.

  • The reconstruction of perioral defects following resection of cancer on the perioral region has been a challenge for oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Surgical management of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) typically involves resection of the carcinoma with a 1cm margin of normal appearing tissue. A large surgical defect is often encountered. The goals of perioral reconstruction are esthetics and function, with oral competence and good lip control. Abbe described the operation that bears his name in 1898, when he reported on the repair of a "conspicuous deformity" in a 21-year-old man born with bilateral cleft lip and palate. Since that time, Abbe flap reconstruction has been used more frequently for repair following resection of malignancies. Large defects of the lips have been repaired with recent modifications of the Abbe flap. The technique has been popularized by Estlander for reconstruction of the lower lip. We have treated 70-year-old male patient with SCC on lower lip using Abbe-Estlander flap. Postoperatively the results showed good prognosis. So we report the result of its treatment and case with review of literatures.

  • This article examines the types and cooking methods of Soondae (Korean Traditional Sausage) as recorded in 12 books of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1909). The ingredients used in Soondae during the Joseon dynasty were dog meat, beef, pork, lamb, and fish. There were no recorded mentions of Soondae in the early Joseon dynasty, but by the middle period there were three different dishes recorded. By the late era of the Joseon dynasty that number had increased to twelve. During the middle era of the Joseon dynasty, one kind of Soondae was prepared using dog meat, one using beef, and one using pork. By the late Joseon dynasty, there were six types of Soondae prepared using beef. They also had three kinds of Soondae prepared using lamb and two using fish, one using pork by that time. The frequency of the Soondae ingredients during the Joseon dynasty in order were beef (46.7%), lamb (20%), pork (13.3%), fish (13.3%), and dog meat (6.7%). Further study will be conducted on recipes and ingredients recorded in these old books to develop a standardized recipe in order to make Soondae appealing to a global palate.

  • Physiological characteristics of Panax ginseng were reviewed in relation to temperature. According to the old literatures and records of cultivator's experiences it was elucidated that ginseng plants require light but hate high temperature and that the cultural methods were developed to content two characteristics in contradiction. Low temperature (cool climate) during growing season seems (or ginseng to be essential and to escape from the extreme coldness according to air and soil temperature of natural habitat and cultivated area. Optimum temperature of dehiscence (15∼below 20$^{\circ}C$) is a little higher than that of germination (10∼15$^{\circ}C$). Optimum temperature for growing of new buds (18∼20$^{\circ}C$) is similar to that for growing after emergence (17∼21$^{\circ}C$). Dormancy of both matured embryo and new buds is broken at the same temperature (2∼3$^{\circ}C$). It seems reasonable that optimum temperature of photosynthesis (22$^{\circ}C$) is similar to that of growth. Respiration quotients of various organs or of whole plant ranged from 1.7 to 3 incrased with high temperature. Respiratory consumption and oxygen limitation seem to be potential factors to induce decay during dehiscence and germination of seeds and root rot in fields. Research on organ differentiation. photosynthesis, respiration and growth with age is needed for the development of cultivation methods.

  • Histiocytosis X is the abnormal proliferation of histiocytes and usually a massive aggregation of eosinophilic leukocytes. The clinical features and prognosises of subclasses of histiocytosis X depend on the severity and extent of the organ involvement. The subclasses include Letterer-Siwe disease(Acute disseminated histiocytosis X), eosinophilic granuloma, Hand-Schuller-Christian disease. Letterer-Siwe disease(acute, subacute form) refers to the form of disease that is most often fatal because of the widespread skeletal, extraskeletal lesion ; this usually affects infants and children less than 3 years of age. Eosinophilic granuloma(histiocytosis X, localized) refers to a chronic form of disease with skeletal lesion ; It usually affects children and young adult. Hand-Schuller-Christian disease(chronic form) refers to a chronic form of disease with skeletal, extraskeletal lesions. It usually affects children over the age of 3 years. In our hospital, 8 year old female patient visited complaining of hard swelling of mandibule body, left side and 6 year old female patient visited complaining of painful swelling of mandibular angle, right side. We diagnosed eosinophilic granuloma and curetted the lesiones and refered to Dept. pediatrics for chemotherapy. We present 2 cases to you with literatures.
