'Anyu', a perilla (Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton) cultivar for edible seed was developed by the Department of Functional Crop Science, National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2008. It was originated from the cross between a pedigree of YCPL1824 as a female and SF9225-3-1 as a male parent in 1998. 'Anyu' can be characterized by purple flower color and brown grain color. 'Anyu' showed semi-dwarft type with 120 cm height, and has lodging tolerance. Maturing date of 'Anyu' was September 24, which is 15 days faster than that of 'Saeyeopsil'. The early maturity of this new cultivar showed a great advantage to various planting system with other crops. This new cultivar has high oil content (45%) and high linolenic acid in the fatty acid composition. The yield potential of 'Anyu' was about 0.9 ton/1ha in the regional yield trial.

Perilla is an oilseed crop cultivated in Korea since ancient times. Due to the high ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid content in perilla, perilla seed oil can easily become rancid. ${\alpha}-Linolenic$ acid is synthesized by two enzymes, endoplasmic reticulum-localized ${\Delta}15$ desaturase (FAD3) and chloroplast-localized ${\Delta}15$ desaturase (FAD7) in vivo. In order to lower the ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid content of the seed oil without disturbing plant growth, we tried to suppress the expression of only the FAD3 gene using RNA interference, whilst maintaining the expression of the FAD7 gene. Seventeen transgenic plants with herbicide ($Basta^{TM}$) resistance were obtained by Agrobacterium-mediated transformation using hypocotyls of perilla plants. The transgenic plants were firstly confirmed by treatment with 0.3% (v/v) $Basta^{TM}$ herbicide, and the expression of FAD3 was measured by Northern blot analysis. The ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid content was 10-20%, 30-40%, and 60% in two, seven, and three of the twelve $T_1$ transgenic perilla plants which had enough seeds to be analyzed for fatty acid composition, respectively. Analysis of the fatty acid composition of $T_2$ progeny seeds from $T_1$ plants with the lowest ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid content showed that the homozygous lines had 6-10% ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid content and the heterozygous lines had 20-26% ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid content. It is expected that the reduction in ${\alpha}-linolenic$ acid content in perilla seed oil will prevent rancidity and can be utilized for the production of high-value functional ingredients such as high ${\gamma}-linolenic$ acid.

The oils were extracted from the mixture of roasted(for 20 min at 190oC) perilla seeds(RPS) and roasted (commercially) peanuts(RPN) by solvent extraction(SE) and mechanical expression(ME). The effects of mixing ratio on physicochemical characteristics and oxidative stability of their oils were investigated. Yields of both SE and ME oils were increased as the RPN ratio in the mixture increased. In all the SE and ME oils, the major fatty acids were oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid, and total saturated fatty acids increased gradually, but total unsaturated fatty acids decreased gradually as the RPN ratio in the mixture was increased. The specific gravity and refractive index of both SE and ME oils decreased as the RPN ratio in the mixture was increased. Acid value, saponification value and iodine value of SE oils decreased as the RPN ratio in the mixture increased, whereas acid value and iodine value of ME oils decreased and saponification value increased. The colors of ME oils were darker brownish than SE oils. The oxidative stability of SE oils was decreased as the RPN ratio in the mixture increased, whereas that of ME oils was increased. Sensory evaluation of all the oils extracted from the mixture with various mixing ratio showed significant differences in flavor, taste, color and overall acceptance(p<0.01). The oil extracted from the mixture of the mixing ratio of 8:2(RPS:RPN) showed slightly higher preference regardless of extraction method.
Perilla is an excellent oil crop for linolenic acid production but still needs more research to improve grain yield and chemical properties. We tried to estimate the possibility for improving grain yield and its quality by applying nitrogen top dressing(4kg per 10a) at 5 days after flowering stage of perilla, using a cultivar Yujin. This study investigated the growth characteristics and seed quality. Nitrogen top dressing on the flowering stage has little affected on such traits as length, node number and diameter of main stem, and branch, cluster and capsules numbers per plant. But compared with standard cultivation as a control, top dressing showed more leaf chlorophyll content by 85%, higher 1000-grain-weight by 31%, and one day extension of maturing period; consequently, grain outyielded by 60% with 123kg per 10a. Seed chemical components also showed 33.3% protein and 48% oil contents that were 11.5% and 6.2% higher than those of control, respectively. Also by top dressing, saturated fatty acid (palmitic and stearic acid) decreased and linoleic acid among unsaturated fatty acids increased. It is concluded that nitrogen topdressing at late flowering stage promotes grain yield and quality of perilla.
Perilla frutescens, which belonging to the Labiatae family, is widely cultivated oil crop and have been used traditional herbal medicine in East Asia such as Korea, China, and Japan. Especially, the leaves and the seeds of this species are important in Korean traditional cooking, as one of the popular garnish and food colorants. Numerous studies have revealed that the beneficial health effects of perilla are due to its several phytochemicals contents, such as rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, luteolin, and apigenin. For this reason, increasing the content of phytochemicals in perilla hasbecome a major breeding objective. The genetic diversity of the rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, luteolin, and apigenin content in perilla seed is poorly documented. We analyzed the rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid, luteolin, and apigenin content of 203 accessions of perilla germplasm by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The rosmarinic acid and luteolin contents ofgermplasms were ranged from $15.7{\mu}g/g$ to $2717.1{\mu}g/g$ and from $1.6{\mu}g/g$ to $582.4{\mu}g/g$ respectively.

Background: The aim of this study was to compare the fatty acid composition, antioxidant activity, and the content of two major phenolic acids, caffeic and rosmarinic acids, of 45 Perilla accessions collected from Russia. Methods and Results: A total of 45 accessions of the genus Perilla were used in this study. The antioxidant activities of these accessions were analyzed using a spectrophotometer, and their caffeic and rosmarinic acid contents were determined using a reversed-phase ultraperformance liquid chromatography (UPLC) system. The Perilla seed oil was recovered using hexane in a soxhlet extraction method. The fatty acid compositions were analyzed using a Shimadzu QP2010 gas chromatography-mass spectoroscopy system. The results showed that accessions IT226732 and IT274300 had the highest content of caffeic and rosmarinic acid, respectively. A cluster analysis based on antioxidant assay results and concentration of phenolic acids led to the categorization of Perilla accessions into three major groups. The accessions in Group I were characterized by higher caffeic and rosmarinic acid content and antioxidant activity, compared to the accessions in the other two groups (p < 0.05). The total oil content ranged between 28.39 and 46.89%. The compositions of oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acid ranged from 11.83 to 19.55%, 11.92 to 16.71%, and 59.19 to 67.28%, respectively. Conclusions: The results of this study indicated that accessions IT274300, IT226732, IT274293, IT235818, and IT235820 could be used as a source of functional materials.

To select resistant oil seed crops against two species of root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne incognita and M. arenaria, 10 cultivars of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) and 10 cultivars of perilla (Perilla frutescens var. japonica) were screened in greenhouse pot test. All sesame cultivars tested were resistant to M. incognita but susceptible to M. arenaria. While, perilla was resistant to both Meloidogyne species. Therefore, perilla cultivars could be used as rotation crop in greenhouse infested with both M. incognita and M. arenaria. But, sesame cultivars only can be used as a rotation crop in greenhouse infested with M. incognita but not for M. arenaria.
This study was conducted to examine the variations in 196 local perilla collected in southern part of Korea and to provide basic informations which can be utilize in perilla breeding programs. The results obtained were gummarized as the follows. Maturing period was widely distributed from 104 to 136 days. The maturing periods of most collections were 111 to 130 days(96%). and that Four percent of collections showed maturing period of below 110 days and above 131 days. Three varieties below 111 days of maturing period were selected among local perilla collected from Jeonnam(Naju and Boseong) and Jeonbuk(Gochang). Stem length was ranged from 71 to 157 cm. The stem length of 111 to 130 cm, under 90 cm, and above 151 cm were 41%,, 7%, and 4%, respectively. Seven varieties with long stem were selected among local perilla collected in Jeonnam(include Damyang collection). The number of cluster per plant was distributed 52 to 291. The distribution of cluster numbers were 100 to 180, under 100, and above 221 was 57%, 13% , and 13%, respectively. The number of seed capsules was distributed 23 to 56 and the collections ranged from at of 26 to 45 was 49.5%. Seed cluster length was distributed from 6 to 20 cm and that ranged from 8 to 14 cm was 62.8%.1,000 grain weight ranged from 2.4 to 5.7 g. The distribution of 1,000 grain weight is 3.1 to 4.0 g,4.1 to 5.0 g, and below 2.9 g was 66.8%, 12.8%, and 19.4%, respectively. The 1,000 grain weight above 5.1 g(1.0%) was selected among local perilla collected in Jeonbuk(Namwon) and Gyeongnam(Changnyeong).
Because of a high degree of unsaturation of perilla seed oil vitamin E deficiency can be produced in chicks by using this particular oil diet. It is therefore convenient to use this oil for elucidating more detailed function (s) of vitamin E. The present study was undertaken to investigate the nutritional and pathological aspects both of high PUFA and of low vitamin E in the diet eventually to elucidate the function(s) of vitamin E. The present study examines the relationships between PUFA, vitamin E and Se in the experimental diets by measuring vitamin E levels both in serum and in liver and activities of SGPT and SGOT and by examining electron micrographs of the chick hepatocytes. Vitamin E concentrations in serum and liver responded to dietary treatments. Serum levels of vitamin E were more affected than those in liver, the values of groups IV(15% fat,- Vit.E) and V(15% fat,-Vit E,-Se) were significantly lower than those of groups I (5% fat) and 111 (15% fat) with P/S ratio of 1. The activities of SGOT and SGPT were found not to be different significantly among different diet groups. Electron microscopic observations of the chick hepatocyte revealed degeneration of mitochondria and appearance of vesicles in the cytoplasm of groups fed diets high in PUFA and deficient in vitamin E alone or deficient in both vitamin E and Se. In the same group pyknotic nuclei and deterioration of the sinusoidal border, showing diminution in microvilli were also observed. More detailed studies concerning biochemical aspects should be carried out by using radioisotopes both in the in vitro and in vivo systems and morphological study should have a focus on the changes in nucleus which seems already suggestive in the present observation.
This study was conducted to examine the variations in 42 local perilla collected in Kangwon province of Korea and to provide basic informations which can be utilize in perilla breeding programs. The results obtained were summarized as the follows. Maturing period was widely distributed from 109 to 140 days. The maturing periods of most collections were 116 to 130 days(95.2%). and that 4.8% of collections shown maturing period of below 115 days and above 131 days. Three varieties 109 day of maturing period were selected among local perilla collected from Yanggu gun. Stem length was ranged from 80 to 140 cm. The stem length of 111 to 130 cm, below 111 cm, and above 131 cm were 54.8%, 38.6%, and 16.7%, respectively. The number of cluster per plant was distributed 23 to 120. The distribution of cluster numbers were 40 to 70, under 40, and above 100 was 57.2%, 16.7%, and 11.9%, respectively. The number of seed capsules was distributed 20 to 40 and the collections ranged from at of 30 to 35 was 38.1 %. Seed cluster length was distributed from 5.1 to 9.0 cm and that ranged from 6.1 to 8.0 cm was 64.3%, 1,000 grain weight ranged from 1.7 to 3.8 g. The distribution of 1,000 grain weight is 2.4 to 2.6 g, 3.0 to 3.2 g, and below 2.9 g was 35.7%, 19.1%, respectively. The 1,000 grain most weight 3.8 g was selected among local perilla collected in Hwacheon gun.
