The cross-section area of cable in the Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) is smaller than that in the onshore wind farm. Because the power loss in OWF is large relatively, the power loss is a key element for the economic evaluation of OWF design. The availability of wind turbine in OWF and the size of OWF are larger than those of onshore wind farm. If the economic evaluation of OWF ignores the availability of wind turbines, the power loss cost of OWF is overpriced. Since there are so many wind turbines, also, the calculation of power loss should be more accurate. In this paper, a method to calculate power loss is proposed for the design of big and complex inner-grid in OWF. The 99.5MW OWF is used for case study to see what effect the proposed method have on the power loss cost.

This paper reviews research trend in suction bucket foundation. Wind energy farm has been considered as an efficient alternative to fuel energy as world markets attempt to discover renewable resources. Recently, Korean government initiated the research projects investigating installation method of offshore wind energy foundation and design guideline as well as verifying feasibility of offshore wind farm. In fact, the installation of monopile and gravity type foundation has been sucessfully carried out in European and other advanced countries, and design guideline of those foundations are well established; however, various types of foundation would be necessary in the near future as offshore wind farm demands abundant wind resources in deep sea. In this paper, bucket foundation is spot lighted as a powerful and economic alternative applicable to deep sea condition.

Offshore wind farms extend a distance from an onshore grid to increase their generating power, but long distance and high power transmissions raise a lot of cost challenges. LFAC (Low Frequency AC) transmission is a new promising technology in high power and low cost power transmission fields against HVDC (High Voltage DC) and HVAC (High Voltage AC) transmissions. This paper presents an economic comparison of LFAC and HVDC transmissions for large offshore wind farms. The economic assessments of two different transmission technologies are analyzed and compared in terms of wind farm capacities (600 MW and 900 MW) and distances (from 25 km to 100 km) from the onshore grid. Based on this comparison, the economic feasibility of LFAC is verified as a most economical solution for remote offshore wind farms.
Due to the accelerated development and transformation of coastal waters by humans, damage to marine mammals is a concern. To understand how coastal development may affect marine mammals, it is essential to determine their distribution characteristics. In this study, the appearance of finless porpoises was confirmed by passive acoustic monitoring around the Southwest offshore wind farm in July, 2020. Although there were no visual observation results of finless porpoises in the research area, the clicks measured in the offshore wind farm were verified by comparing with acoustic characteristics of the clicks measured in the area with a high detection rate. During the experimental period, clicks of finless porpoises were recorded for ten consecutive days, and Clicks per Porpoise Positive Minute (CPPM) was 40.7 clicks min-1, Porpoise Positive Minutes (PPM) was 9.7 %, Encounter duration and waiting time were 18.2 min and 94.9 min respectively. This study provides information on the appearance of them in the Southwest offshore wind farm and this result may help to monitor the impact of marine mammals from wind farm operation.

The global and domestic market for offshore wind farm is expected to grow fast, and the design and installation of substructure and foundation is getting more important. As for the offshore wind farms located in the shallow(depth < 20m) water, the construction and installation of the substructure and foundation makes up about 1/4 ~1/3 of the offshore wind farm construction cost, and the portion is expected to increase because the turbine capacity is increasing from 2 ~ 3MW to 5MW or larger and the water depth of wind farms is also increasing over 30m. As a foundation for offshore wind turbine, the suction caisson foundation is being considered to be a highly competitive alternative to the conventional monopile or gravity based structure, because it has features suitable for the offshore construction such as quick installation, no heavy equipment for penetration and no hammering noise for driving. In order to study the installation behaviour of the suction caisson, laboratory tests were performed with sand. The pore water pressure and displacement were measured to analyze the suction pressure during penetration, the penetration speed and the amount of heaving.

A time-domain simulation tool to predict the dynamic power output of wind turbines in an offshore wind farm was developed in this study. A wind turbine model consisting of first or second order transfer functions of various wind turbine elements was combined with the Ainslie's eddy viscosity wake model to construct the simulation tool. The wind turbine model also includes an aerodynamic model that is a look up table of power and thrust coefficients with respect to the tip speed ratio and pitch angle of the wind turbine obtained by a commercial multi-body dynamics simulation tool. The wake model includes algorithms of superposition of multiple wakes and propagation based on Taylor's frozen turbulence assumption. Torque and pitch control algorithms were implemented in the simulation tool to perform max-Cp and power regulation control of the wind turbines. The simulation tool calculates wind speeds in the two-dimensional domain of the wind farm at the hub height of the wind turbines and yields power outputs from individual wind turbines. The NREL 5MW reference wind turbine was targeted as a wind turbine to obtain parameters for the simulation. To validate the simulation tool, a Danish offshore wind farm with 80 wind turbines was modelled and used to predict the power from the wind farm. A comparison of the prediction with the measured values available in literature showed that the results from the simulation program were fairly close to the measured results in literature except when the wind turbines are congruent with the wind direction.
The purpose for installation of offshore weather station is a measurement of wind resources and so on. If weather station is operated, it will be possible to analysis for wind resource and arrangement of wind farm by using measured data. In this paper, we carried out the development of offshore wind resource measurement system for measuring offshore wind resource. Also, In order to monitor for real-time wind data with 1 Hz, we installed the wireless transmission system. All wind characteristic data are sent to the server PC through the this system is connected outport of DataLogger. Transmitted wind data were used in order to look at in the Web-page and tablet PC on a real time basis in a graph. In this paper, we will introduce about the wind resource measurement and remote monitoring system that is the result of study.

According to the increasement of demand for energy around globe, the concern degree of advanced countries for ocean energy including offshore wind power becomes excited. In domestic case, the government set up a goal that jumps up to the third ranked powerful nation of offshore wind in the world until 2020 and announced "The plan for 2.5-gigawatt wind farm off the south-west coast by 2019". Also the legal basis was created in order to support development of offshore wind power as 'A law on development, use, supply and promotion for New energy and renewable energy' was established by law. However to promote offshore wind power projects, there are much difficulties that developers should be applied by permitting use of public water surface and regulations of several domestic public institution. Therefore in this paper, we suggested an alternative to promote efficient offshore wind power projects by comparative analysis between domestic and foreign on regulatory pathways for siting and permitting offshore wind facilities.

In order to secure the safety of increasing offshore activities such as offshore wind farm maintenance and fishing, IMPACT, a mid-term marine weather forecasting system, was established by predicting marine weather up to 7 days in advance. Forecast data from the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency (KHOA), which provides the most reliable marine meteorological service in Korea, was used, but wind speed and wave height forecast errors increased as the leading forecast period increased, so improvement of the accuracy of the model results was needed. The Model Output Statistics (MOS) method, a post-correction method using statistical machine learning, was applied to improve the prediction accuracy of wave height, which is an important factor in forecasting the risk of marine activities. Compared with the observed data, the wave height prediction results by the model before correction for 6 to 7 days ahead showed an RMSE of 0.692 m and R of 0.591, and there was a tendency to underestimate high waves. After correction with the MOS technique, RMSE was 0.554 m and R was 0.732, confirming that accuracy was significantly improved.
