  • To evaluate transport-induced cladding embrittlement after interim-dry storage, ring compression tests were carried out at room temperature(RT) and 135 ℃. The ring compression test specimens were prepared by simulating the interim-dry storage conditions that include four peak cladding temperatures of 250, 300, 350 and 400 ℃, two tensile hoop stresses of 80 and 100 MPa, two hydrogen contents of 250 and 500 wt.ppm-H and a cooling rate of 0.3 ℃/min. Radial hydride fractions of the ring specimens vary depending on those interim-dry storage conditions. The RT compression tests generated lower offset strains than the 135 ℃ ones. In addition, the RT and 135 ℃ compression tests indicate that a higher peak cladding temperature, a higher tensile hoop stress and the lower hydrogen content generated a lower offset strain. Based on the embrittlement criterion of 2.0% offset strain, an allowable peak temperature during the interim-dry storage may be proposed to be less than 350 ℃ under the tensile hoop stress of 80 MPa at the terminal cool-down temperature of 135 ℃.

  • The offset voltage in silicon Hall plates is mainly caused by stress and strain in package, and by alignment in process. The offset voltage is appeared random for condition change with time in the factory, is non-linearly changed with temperature. In this paper proposed new method of design of Hall IC, and methematicaly proved relation layout of chip of 90$^{\circ}$-shift-current Hall plate pair is matched with "Differentail to single ended Conversion amplifier." In the experiment, the offset voltage is reduced about 1/100 time than the original offset voltage.

  • An elastic-plastic finite element analysis of fatigue crack closure is performed for plane strain conditions. The stabilization behavior of crack opening level and the effect of mesh size on the crack opening stress are investigated. In order to obtain a stabilized crack opening level for plane strain conditions, the crack must be advanced through approximately four times the initial monotonic plastic zone. The crack opening load tends to increase with the decrease of mesh size. The mesh size nearly equal to the theoretical plane strain cyclic plastic zone size may provide reasonable numerical results comparable with experimental crack opening data. The crack opening behavior is influenced by the crack growth increment and discontinuous opening behavior is observed. A procedure to predict the most appropriate mesh size for different stress ratio is suggested. Crack opening loads predicted by the FE analysis based on the procedure suggested resulted in good agreement with experimental ones within the error of 5 %. Effect of the distance behind the crack tip on the crack opening load determined by the ASTM compliance offset method based on the load-displacement relation and by the rotational offset method based on the load-differential displacement relation is investigated. Optimal gage location and method to determine the crack opening load is suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the proper evaluation method of member forces on the propulsion shaft using strain gages to confirm bearing offset. The strain measurements to find out the bending moments of the shaft have been performed in the yard to be compared with the results of the shaft alignment analysis. The clutch of the propulsion shaft is highly sensitive to shear forces as well as bending moments and the necessity of the measurement of shear forces on the shaft for normal operation of the clutch is recently on the rise. In this study, an evaluation method of the member forces (bending moments and shear forces) of the shaft clutch based on the shaft strain measurement is established. Through the application of this method to the eight $216,000\;m^3$ LNG carriers, the safeties of the clutch systems are evaluated and the better bearing offsets are deduced for the LNG carriers. After adjusting the bearing offsets, all the sea trials of the eight LNG carriers are successfully carried out without any troubles.

  • The factors affecting on the fatigue strength of spot_welded specimens have been studied. The influence of initial overloads on the fatigue life of spot_welded tensile_shear specimens is investigated by considering fatigue crack initiation and crack propagation. The change of strain range and the influence of initial overload are correlated on the basis ol strain results. The results of this study are as follows. l) The initial absolute strain range decreased with initial overloads increase, and absolute strain range decreased before transformation of waveform of strain, but increased after transformation of waveform of strain. 2) In case of subsequent point of inflection of offset strain, the increment of this strain decreased with initial overload increase. 3) As initial overloads increase, the deformation behavior of spot welded parts is restricted after overloading.

  • The 4-axis strain-gauge, which is widely applied to military weapon systems, is operated in poor temperature and vibration conditions, tolerance may increase and malfunctions may occur. To improve this, this paper proposes a signal-processing software technique for the tolerance of the 4-axis strain gauge applied to a military weapon system. First, the tolerance of the strain-gauge and the signal processing circuit according to the ambient temperature were evaluated and analyzed. Second, a software technique for processing the dead zone and offset area that can improve the tolerance of the strain-gauge is proposed. The experimental results applying the software technique confirmed that it operated normally in the temperature test and operation test. Therefore, the proposed software technique is valid and can be used as useful information to improve tolerance due to ambient temperature and vibration when designing a system using a strain-gauge.

  • The effects of hydride amount (20-850 wppm), orientation (circumferential and radial), and temperature (room temperature, 100 ℃, 200 ℃) on the axial mechanical properties of Zircaloy-4 cladding were comprehensively examined. The fraction of radial hydride fraction in the cladding was quantified using PROPHET, an in-house radial hydride fraction analysis code. Uniaxial tensile tests (UTTs) were conducted at various temperatures to obtain the axial mechanical properties. Hydride orientation has a limited effect on the axial mechanical behavior of hydrided Zircaloy-4 cladding. Ultimate tensile stress (UTS) and associated uniform elongation demonstrated limited sensitivity to hydride content under UTT. Statistical uncertainty of UTS was found small, supporting the deterministic approach for the load-failure analysis of hydrided Zircaloy-4 cladding. These properties notably decrease with increasing temperature in the tested range. The dependence of yield strength on hydrogen content differed from temperature to temperature. The ductility-related parameters, such as total elongation, strain energy density (SED), and offset strain decrease with increasing hydride contents. The abrupt loss of ductility in UTT was found at ~700 wppm. Demonstrating a strong correlation between total elongation and offset strain, SED can be used as a comprehensive measure of ductility of hydrided zirconium alloy.

  • Dynamic and static load tests are conducted in four construction sites by using steel pipe piles(SPP) and concrete piles to compare differences of load bearing mechanism. Steel pipe piles are instrumented with electric strain gages and are subject to dynamic load tests during driving. The damage of strain gages attached is checked simultaneously. Static load test is also conducted on the same piles after two to seven days' elapse. Then load-settlement behavior and shaft and/or tip resistances are measured. As a result, the allowable bearing capacity calculated by the Davisson's offset method of CAPWAP analysis shows 2~33% larger than that of static load test. The average value of allowable bearing capacity of static load test is closer to the allowable capacity obtained at the safety factor of 2.5 applied on ultimate bearing capacity than to the one obtained from the Davisson's offset method. The analysis of strain gage readings shows that unit skin friction increases with depth. Furthermore, the friction mobilized around the 1~2m above the pile tip considerably contributes to the total shaft resistance.

  • Isothermal cyclic stress-strain deformation and thermomechanical deformation (TMD) of 429EM stainless steel were analyzed using a rheological model employing a bi-linear model. The proposed model was composed of three parameters: elastic modulus, yield stress and tangent modulus. Monotonic stress-strain curves at various temperatures were used to construct the model. The yield stress in the model was nearly same as 0.2% offset yield stress. Hardening relation factor, m, was proposed to relate cyclic hardening to kinematic hardening. Isothermal cyclic stress-strain deformation could be described well by the proposed model. The model was extended to describe TMD. The results revealed that the hi-linear thermomechanical model overestimates the experimental data under both in-phase and out-of-phase conditions in the temperature range of $350-500^{\circ}C$ and it was due to the enhanced dynamic recovery effect.

  • A strain-gradient crystal plasticity constitutive model was developed in order to predict the Hall-Petch behavior of a Ni-base polycrystalline superalloy. The constitutive model involves statistically stored dislocation and geometrically necessary dislocation densities, which were incorporated into the Bailey-Hirsch type flow stress equation with six strength interaction coefficients. A strain-gradient term (called slip-system lattice incompatibility) developed by Acharya was used to calculate the geometrically necessary dislocation density. The description of Kocks-Argon-Ashby type thermally activated strain rate was also used to represent the shear rate of an individual slip system. The constitutive model was implemented in a user material subroutine for crystal plasticity finite element method simulations. The grain size dependence of the flow stress (viz., the Hall-Petch behavior) was predicted for a Ni-base polycrystalline superalloy NIMONIC PE16. Simulation results showed that the present constitutive model fairly reasonably predicts 0.2%-offset yield stresses in a limited range of the grain size.
