  • PURPOSES : This study focuses on the evaluation of interface performance with varying surface texture and tack coat application in an asphalt overlay. METHODS : The evaluation is carried out in two phases: tracking test and interface bond strength test. Using an image processing tool, tracking test is conducted to evaluate the susceptibility of the tack coat material to produce excessive tracking during application. Using the pull-off test method, the bond strength test is performed to determine the ability of the interface layer to resist failure. RESULTS : Results show that the underseal application yields less tracking compared to other applications. However, the bond strength is barely within the minimum acceptable value. On the other hand, RSC-4 produces higher bond strength for all surface types, but the drying time is long, which produces excessive tracking. CONCLUSIONS : While underseal application may be suitable for a trackless condition, the bond strength is less appealing compared to the rest of the tack applications available. RSC-4 demonstrated a high and consistent bond strength performance, but more time is required for drying to avoid excessive tracking. Tack coat application and surface type combination produce varying results. Therefore, these should be considered when selecting suitable future tack coat application options.

  • The track tension is closely related to the maneuverability of tracked vehicles and the durability of tracks and suspension systems. In order to minimize the excessive load on the tracks and to pre vent the peal-off of tracks from the road wheels, it is required to maintain the optimum track tension throughout the maneuver. However, the track tension cannot be easily measured due to the limitation in the sensor technology, harsh environment, etc. In this paper an indirect track tension monitoring system is developed based on idler assembly models, a geometric relation around the idler, and the tractive force estimated by using the Extended Kalman Filter. The performance of the tension monitoring system is verified with the results obtained from the Multi-Body Dynamics model.

  • KESF-1 foot conceptually provides storage of potential energy and is converted to kinetic energy throughout the weight - bearing phase of the gait cycle. This stored energy is progressively released as the foot continues through the toe-off phase to rebound and propel the body forward. A weight deflects the keel through a predetermined range, then the keel "springs back" as weight is removed. Foot designs criteria were selected to guide development beyond the proof-of concept composite material keels; 1) store and return energy (1-3/4 " metatarsal deflection at 435 pounds vertical load), 2) natural feel and stability; 3) useful life of 3-years: 4) lightweight; 5) reduced production costs. The purpose of this study is developed the comfortable stable foot that fitted with Korean lifestyle and road condition. The results produced the realistic cosmetic foot cover with polyurethane form and the keel composed with composite materials of both glass fiber and carbon fiber.

  • Recently, the applications of unmanned robots are increasing in various fields including surveillance and reconnaissance, planet exploration and disaster relief. To perform their missions with success, the robots should be able to evaluate terrain's characteristics quantitatively and identify traversable regions to progress toward a goal using mounted sensors. Recently, the authors have proposed techniques that extract terrain information and analyze traversability for off-road navigation of an unmanned robot. In this paper, we examine the use of 3D world models(terrain maps) to classify obstacle and safe terrain for increasing the reliability of the proposed techniques. A world model is divided into several patches and each patch is classified as belonging either to an obstacle or a non-obstacle using three types of metrics. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on real terrain maps.

  • Most rockfall prevention net among the rockfall prevention equipment that is constructed in around the road is actuality lack of function by quantitative research insufficiency etc.. Most of rockfall prevention net are composed to setting needle, perpendicular and horizontal wire rope and wire net. Also, function of rockfall prevention net depend on setting needle and the wire net and perpendicular and horizontal wire rope are fixed by setting needle. when unreasonable load is offered setting needle, rockfall prevention net can lose the function and happen continuous falling off of rockfall prevention net. Because rockfall prevention net have a such structural defect, improvement had been required in reply. So in this paper, spot application of Rock Bolt & Net Connection method and falling rock support ability are estimated by numerical analysis. As a result, when Rock Bolt & Net Connection Method is applied to cutting slope, decreases of stress and displacement is examined than current rockfall prevention net.

  • The train ferry, accommodating trains roll on and off, is often called as 'Railway on the Sea' or 'Blue High-way' since she can connect the railways or roads segregated by the sea and improve the accessibility and continuity of land transport systems. The ferry is especially appropriate to the intermodal transport routes mostly passing through the land but have relatively short sea segment. As the train ferry can considerably reduce the cost and time for cargo handling and modal shift and unnecessitates excessive initial investment on infrastructures such as large harbor cranes or vast container yards, introduction of train Ro-Ro ferries lessen the total transport cost for door-to-door transportation with full exploitation of the existing railway system. All the ports placed in Shandong, Liaoning and Jiangsu provinces of China are connected to the hinterlands via well developed railway and road systems. Therefore, realization of the Incheon-Yantai train ferry system will link Korea railways to TCR and the 4,131-kilometer-long Longhai-Lanxin Railway, along the famous Eurasian Continental Bridge. In the present paper, the Incheon-Yantai train ferry will be introduced as a good example of an efficient multimodal short sea shipping system for Northeast Asia.

  • A gas spring provides support force for lifting, positioning, lowering, and counterbalancing weights. It offers a wide range of reaction force with a flat force characteristic, simple mounting, compact size, speed controlled damping, and cushioned end motion. The most common usage is as a support on a horizontally hinged automotive tail gate. However, its versatility and ease of use has been applied in many other industrial applications ranging from office equipment to off-road vehicles. The cylinder of a gas spring is filled with compressed nitrogen gas, which is applied with equal pressure on both sides of the piston. The surface area of the rod side of the piston is smaller than the opposite side, producing a pushing force. The magnitude of the reaction force is determined by the cross-sectional area of the piston rod and the internal pressure inside the cylinder. The reaction force is influenced by many design parameters such as initial chamber volume, diameter ratio, etc. In this paper, we investigated the reaction force characteristics and carried out parameter sensitivity analysis for the design parameters of a gas spring.

  • This paper presents an active vision system for on-line traffic sign recognition. The system is composed of two cameras, one is equipped with a wide-angle lens and the other with a telephoto lends, and a PC with an image processing board. The system first detects candidates for traffic signs in the wide-angle image using color, intensity, and shape information. For each candidate, the telephoto-camera is directed to its predicted position to capture the candidate in a large size in the image. The recognition algorithm is designed by intensively using built in functions of an off-the-shelf mage processing board to realize both easy implementation and fast recognition. The results of on-road experiments show the feasibility of the system.

  • The mobility of tracked vehicles is mainly influenced by the interaction between tracks and soil, so that the characteristics of their interactions are quite important fur the tracked vehicle study. In particular, the track tension is closely related to the maneuverability of tracked vehicles and the durability of tracks and suspension systems. In order to minimize the excessive load on the tracks and to prevent the peal-off of tracks from the road-wheels, the Dynamic Track Tensioning System (DTTS) which maintains the optimum track tension throughout the maneuver is required. It consists of track tension monitoring system, track tension controller and hydraulic system. In this paper, a dynamic track tensioning system is developed for tracked vehicles which are subject to various maneuvering tasks. The track tension is estimated based on the idler assembly model. Using the monitored track tension and con sidering the highly nonlinear hydraulic units, fuzzy logic controllers are designed in order to control the track tension. The track tensioning performance of the proposed DTTS is verified through the simulation of the Multi -body Dynamics tool.
