A DABCO Derived Ionic Liquid Based on Tetrafluoroborate Anion: Preparation, Characterization and Evaluation of its Catalytic Activity in the Synthesis of 14-Aryl-14H-dibenzo[a, j]xanthenes

  • A room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) derived from 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) consisting of tetrafluoroborate anion, 1-butyl-4-(4-sulfonylbutyl)-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane hydrogen sulfate tetrafluoroborate ($[C_4DABCOC_4SO_3H][BF_4][HSO_4]$) was synthesized and catalytically evaluated in the synthesis of 14-aryl-14H-dibenzo[a,j]xanthenes by cyclocondensation reaction of ${\beta}$-naphthol and aryl aldehydes. This novel RTIL with an acidic $SO_3H$ group showed high catalytic activity with good to excellent yields of the desired products in short reaction times. Moreover, the catalyst could be recovered and reused at least three times with only slight reduction in its catalytic activity.

Nematicidal Activity and Chemical Component of Poria cocos

  • Poria cocos, a famous traditional Chinese medicine, was found to have nematicidal activity in experiments searching for nematicidal fungi. The experiment showed it could kill 94.9% of the saprophytic nematode, Panagrellus redivivue, 92.6% of the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne arenaria, and 93.5% of the pine nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, on PDA plate within 12 hours. According to the nematicidal activity, three new compounds, 2, 4, 6-triacetylenic octane diacid, 2, 4, 5, 6-tetrahydroxyhexanoic acid and 3, 4-dihydroxy-2-keto-n-butyl 2,4,5,6-tetrahydroxyhexanate, were isolated from submerged cultures of Poria cocos. Of these, 2, 4, 6-triacetylenic octane diacid could kill 83.9% Meloidogyne arenaria and 73.4% Panagrellus redivivus at 500 ppm within 12 hours. Here, it is reported for the first time that Poria cocos has nematicidal activity.

Phase Behavior Study of Poly(ethylene-co-octene) in normal-Hydrocarbons

  • Cloud-point and bubble-point data to $170^{\circ}C$ and 50 bar are presented for four different solvents, normal pentane. n-hexane, n-heptane, and n-octane with poly(ethylene-co-42 wt% octene) ($PEO_{42}$) copolymer. The pressure-concentration isotherms measured for $PEO_{42}$ - normal pentane have maximums at around 5 wt% of the copolymer concentrations in the solution. $PEO_{42}$- normal pentane system exhibits LCST-type phase behavior at temperatures greater than $130^{\circ}C$. Below $120^{\circ}C$, bubble-point type transitions are observed. However, the binary mixtures for $PEO_{42}$ in n-hexane, n-heptane, and n-octane have only bubble-point type transitions at the pressure-temperature region investigated in this study. The single-phase region of PEO - alkane mixtures increases with the molecular size of alkane solvent due to the increasing dispersion interactions between PEO and the alkane.

  • With aiming to prepare microcapsules having a particle size of $30-50{\mu}m$, thermally expandable capsules with relatively uniform particle sizes consisting of a n-octane/poly(acrylonitrile-co-methyl methacrylate) core/shell structure were synthesized using SPG membrane emulsification and suspension polymerization. Four steric stabilizers and five crosslinking agents were employed. When poly(vinyl alcohol) as a stabilizer was used, the prepared capsules showed a smooth and regular morphology and the liquid hydrocarbon (n-octane) was well encapsulated in the core. When 1,4-butnaediol methacrylate (BDDMA) was used as a crosslinker, the uniform capsules with the average diameter of $36.8{\mu}m$ were synthesized. The capsules prepared with 0.05 mol% BDDMA showed the best encapsulation efficiency.

  • Researches on hypersonic aircraft technologies have been carried out to increase flight speeds. However, increase in flight speeds causes heat loads that could lead structural change of aircraft's component. Researches on cooling technologies using endothermic fuels are progressing in the USA, France and Russia to treat the heat loads. Endothermic fuels are liquid hydrocarbon aircraft fuels which are able to absorb the heat loads by undergoing endothermic reactions, such as thermal and catalytic cracking. In this study, methylcyclohexane, n-octane, and n-dodecane were selected as model endothermic fuels and experiments in endothermic properties were implemented. Experimental conditions were supercritical condition of each model fuels in which actual endothermic fuels were exposed. The object of this study is to identify endothermic properties of the model endothermic fuels and to predict endothermic properties of actual fuels such as kerosene fuels.

  • This paper described the estimation methods of CO2 emission of vehicles. The important of energy and environment has emerged in the world, and the field of vehicle's development as well. CO2 was particularly the object of emission-regulation that caused of global warming. There are performance comparison methods by driving mileage, International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and chemical equation for the combustion of Octane. We took the measurement by getting data through OBD-II port from vehicle covered 5 km on road. We got the diagnosis information, specific mileage and fuel consumption in this experiment. We are able to expect similar CO2 emission by the methods in the normal speed driving. Also, we can make more realistic approach of CO2 emission by the method of estimation by IPCC and chemical equation for the combustion of Octane in rapid acceleration driving.

Study on Effect of Phase Separation of Bioethanol Blends Fuel by Water Contents (수분 함량에 따른 바이오에탄올혼합 연료유의 상 분리 영향성에 관한 연구)

  • When bioethanol and water are mixed at a proper ratio, phase separation can occur because of the immiscibility of biobutanol with water. Phase separation in bioethanol blends fuels is a major problem for gasoline vehicle users due to effect of octane number and component corrosion. Thus, in this study, the phase separation of bioethanol was examined effect of bioethanol blends (E3 (3 vo.% bioethanol in gasoline), E5 and E10) in presence of water. The effect were evaluated behavior with phase separation test, simulation test of fuel tank in gas station according to water addition volume and it was investigated change of water content, bioethanol content and octane number for gasoline phase in bioethanol blends (E3, E5 and E10) every 1 week after water addition. The E3 occurred phase separation more easily than the E5 and E10 in small water contents because solubility of water on ethanol content difference in gasoline-ethanol. It was kept a initial level of water content, bioethanol content, and octane number by repeated sample replacing in simulation test of fuel tank.
