  • Measurements of ocean color from space since 1970s provided vital information with reference to physical and biogeochemical properties of the oceanic waters. The utility of these data has been explored in order to map and monitor highly toxic/or harmful algal blooms (HABs) that affected most of coastal waters throughout the world due to accelerated eutrophication from human activities and certain oceanic processes. However, the global atmospheric correction and bio-optical algorithms developed for oceanic waters were found to yield false information about the HABs in coastal waters. The present study aimed to evaluate the potential use of red tide index (RI) method, which has been developed by Ahn and Shanmugam (2005), for mapping of HABs in Korean and neighboring waters. Here we employed the SSMM to remove the atmospheric effect in the SeaWiFS image data and the achieved indices by RI method were found more appropriate in correctly identifying potential areas of the encountered HABs in Korean South Sea (KSS) and Chinese coastal waters during 1999-2004. But the existence of high absorbing and scattering materials greatly interfered with the standard OC4 algorithm which falsely identified red tides in these waters. In comparison with other methods, the RI approach for the early detection of HABs can provide state managers with accurate identification of the extent and location of these blooms as a management tool.

  • The diffuse attenuation coefficient for down-welling irradiance $K_d({\lambda})$, which is the propagation of down-welling irradiance at wavelength ${\lambda}$ from surface to a depth (z) in the ocean, and underwater visibility are important optical parameters for ocean studies. There have been several studies on $K_d({\lambda})$ and underwater visibility around the world, but only a few studies have focused on these properties in the Korean sea. Therefore, in the present study, we studied $K_d({\lambda})$ and underwater visibility around the coastal area of the Yellow Sea, and developed $K_d({\lambda})$ and underwater visibility algorithms for ocean color satellite sensor. For this research we conducted a field campaign around the Yellow Sea from $19{\sim}22$ September, 2006 and there we obtained a set of ocean optical and environmental data. From these datasets the $K_d({\lambda})$ and underwater visibility algorithms were empirically derived and compared with the existing NASA SeaWiFS $K_d({\lambda})$ algorithm and NRL (Naval Research Laboratory) underwater visibility algorithm. Such comparisons over a turbid area showed small difference in the $K_d({\lambda})$ algorithm and constants of our result for underwater visibility algorithm showed slightly higher values.

  • PTFE has good mechanical and chemical stability at a wide range of temperatures and demonstrates a low friction coefficient value. PTFE is being used for self-lubricating parts in industry. But it shows a high wear rate. Thus, PTFE and nano-diamond powder were mixed into a composite and the wear properties of a PTFE coating layer on Al6061 was investigated. A ball-on-disk type of wear tester was used under a dry condition and different temperatures of oil. After the wear test, the wear track wasexamined by optical microscope. The PTFE-diamond showed the lowest friction coefficient (0.02) of all the lubricants in the experiments. The friction coefficient was shown to be directly related to the diamond powder in the PTFE coating. Adhesion estimations were performed by a scratch test, which is mainly used for coatings. The critical load between the coating and substrate was defined through analyses of the friction load, normal load curve, and acoustic emissions, along with optical microscope observations. The scratch test results showed that an import item (SWISS) gave the highest critical load values.

  • Atmospheric correction over the ocean part is more important than that over the land because the signal from the ocean is very small about one tenth of that reflected from land. In this study, the Spectral Shape Matching Method (SSMM) developed by Ahn and Shanmugam (2004) is evaluated using Landsat imagery acquired over the highly turbid Saemangeum Coastal Area. The result of SSMM is compared with COST model developed by Chavez (1991 and 1997). In principle, SSMM is simple and easy to implement on any satellite imagery, relying on both field and image properties. To assess the potential use of these methods, several field campaigns were conducted in the Saemangeum coastal area corresponding with Landsat-7 satellite's overpass on 29 May 2005. In-situ data collected from the coastal waters of Saemangeum using optical instruments (ASD field spectroradiometer) consists of ChI, Ap, SS, aooM, F(d). In order to perform SSMM, we use the in-situ water-leaving radiance spectra from clear oceanic waters to estimate the the path radiance from total signal recorded at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), due to the reason that the shape of clear water-leaving radiance spectra is nearly stable than turbid water-leaving radiance spectra. The retrieved water-leaving radiance after subtraction of path signal from TOA signal in this way is compared with that estimated by COST model. The result shows that SSMM enabled retrieval of water-leaving radiance spectra that are consistent with in-situ data obtained from Saemangeum coastal waters. The COST model yielded significantly high errors in these areas.

  • Several ocean color algorithms have been developed for GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) using in-situ bio-optical data sets. These data sets collected around the Korean Peninsula between 1998 and 2009 include chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a), suspended sediment concentration (SS), absorption coefficient of dissolved organic matter ($a_{dom}$), and remote sensing reflectance ($R_{rs}$) obtained from 1348 points. The GOCI Chl-a algorithm was developed using a 4-band remote sensing reflectance ratio that account for the influence of suspended sediment and dissolved organic matter. The GOCI Chl-a algorithm reproduced in-situ chlorophyll concentration better than the other algorithms. In the SeaWiFS images, this algorithm reduced an average error of 46 % in chlorophyll concentration retrieved by standard chlorophyll algorithms of SeaWiFS. For the GOCI SS algorithm, a single band was used (Ahn et al., 2001) instead of a band ratio that is commonly used in chlorophyll algorithms. The GOCI $a_{dom}$ algorithm was derived from the relationship between remote sensing reflectance band ratio ($R_{rs}(412)/R_{rs}(555)$) and $a_{dom}(\lambda)$). The GOCI Chl-a fluorescence and GOCI red tide algorithms were developed by Ahn and Shanmugam (2007) and Ahn and Shanmugam (2006), respectively. If the launch of GOCI in June 2010 is successful, then the developed algorithms will be analyzed in the GOCI CAL/VAL processes, and improved by incorporating more data sets of the ocean optical properties data that will be obtained from waters around the Korean Peninsula.

  • An electrode-evaporation technology on both the top and bottom sides of the bare vertical-type single chip separated from the traditional substrate by cooling, was developed for III-nitride vertical-type single chip LEDs with thick GaN epilayer. The post-process of the cooling step was followed by sorting the bare vertical-type single chip LEDs into the holes in a pocket-type shadow mask for deposition of the electrodes at the top and bottom sides of bare vertical-type single chip LEDs without the traditional substrate for electrode evaporation technology for vertical-type single chip LEDs. The variation in size of the hole between the designed shadow mask and the deposited electrodes owing to the use of the designed pocket-type shadow mask is investigated. Furthermore, the electrical and the optical properties of bare vertical-type single chip LEDs deposited with two different shapes of n-type electrodes using the pocket-type shadow mask are investigated to explore the possibility of the e-beam evaporation method.

  • Optical properties of sea water were studied in the entrance of Tokyo Bay, Japan. based on the data obtained from seven oceanographic stations in June. 1985. The observation of surface irradiance and underwater irradiance of sea water for eight kind of wavelength (378, 422, 481, 513, 570, 621, 653. 677nm) of sun light was conducted using the underwater irradiameter (Isigawa # SR-8). The mean att;enuation coefficient of the sea water was appeared to be 0.245 (0.042-0.776) and the attenuation co~fficient of the sea water for wavelength appeared such as 0.227 for 378 nm, 0.186 for 422 nm. O. 175 for 481 nm. O. 176 for 513 nm. O. 185 for 570 nm, 0.337 for 621 nm. O. 321 for 653 nm, O. 348 for 677 nm. The transparency was 7.0 m (5.5-9 m). water color was 10 (8.0-13.0) in the study area and the sun altitude was 60.95$^{\circ}$ (43.610-75.500). The relationship between attenuation coefficient (K) and transparency (D) was K = 2.63/ D (1.28/ D- 4. 87/D). The rate of light penetration for eight kind of wave Ie nth (378, 422. 481. 513. 570, 621, 653, 677 nm) were computed with reference to the surface light intensity respectively. The mean rate of light penetration in proportion to depths were 68.63% (46.02-86.07%) in 1 m layer, 18.40% (2.07 -48.48%) in 5m layer, 4.82% (0.042-22.30%) in 10m layer and 1.35% (0.01I-7.42%) in 20m layer. The rate of light penetration at the transparency layer with reference to the surface light intensity was shown as 10.39% (0.77-27.46%).

  • We propose a tunable flat-top bandpass filter to pass light in a customized wavelength band by using long-period fiber gratings (LPFG) structure. The LPFG structure is composed of a core mode blocker in between two LPFGs. The bandpass spectrum of the proposed structure is obtained in overlapped wavelength band of two LPFGs operating on the same modes. To analyze the properties, we introduce a mathematical matrix model for the structure. We theoretically demonstrate flexibility of the flat-top bandpass filter with various bandwidths.

  • Recently, number of studies for porous silicon have been investigated by many researchers. Multistructured porous silicon (PSi), distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) PSi, has been a topic of interest, because of its unique optical properties. DBR PSi were prepared by an electrochemical etch of $P^{{+}{+}}$-type silicon wafer of resistivity between 0.1 $m{\Omega}cm$ with square wave current density, resulting two different refractive indices. In this work, We have fabricated a simple and portable organic vapor-sensing device based on DBR porous silicon and investigated the optical characteristics of DBR porous silicon. DBR porous silicon have been characterized by FT-IR, Ocean optics 2000 spectrometer. The device used DBR PSi chip has been demonstrated as an excellent gas sensor, showing a great senstivity to a toxic vapor (TEP, DMMP, DEEP) at room temperature.

  • Previously we introduced ray-tracing based 3D optical earth system model for specular and scattering properties of all components of the system (i.e. clear-sky atmosphere, land surfaces and an ocean surface). In this study, we enhanced 3-dimensional atmospheric structure with vertical atmospheric profiles for multiple layer and cloud layers using Lambertian and Mie theory. Then the phase dependent disk averaged spectra are calculated. The main results, simulated phase dependent disk averaged spectra and light curves, are compared with the 7 bands(300~1000nm) light curves data of the Earth obtained from High Resolution Instrument(HRI) in Deep Impact spacecraft during Earth flyby in 2008. We note that the results are comparable with the observation.
