  • Characteristics of suspended sediment concentration of equilibrium and non-equilibrium state caused by waves and currents are investigated by conducting a movable bed experiments in wave tanks. In the region where a downward flux of suspended sediment is larger than a upward flux, time-averaged vertical distribution of suspended sediment does not indicate logarithmic distribution. A new numerical procedure for predicting time-averaged suspended sediment concentration is also proposed based on two-dimensional advective diffusion equation by applying a split-operator approach. It is found that the unposed procedure can predict measured distribution of suspended sediment satisfactorily.

  • A model harbour with Plan scale of $1.08{\times}1.08m$ is built on a tidal tank using a Froude relationship from a real harbour($432{\times}432m$). Velocity components are measured by a ultrasonic velocity meter and flow structure is then predicted using a 2-D depth integrated hydrodynamic model. In the finite difference model implemented in this study, various wall boundary conditions, i.e. no-slip, free-slip, partial-slip and semi-slip are used to represent turbulent diffusion terms, e.g. ${\partial}^2U_{ij}/{\partial}x^2\;or\;{\partial}^2U_{ij}/{\partial}y^2$. These conditions are focused to investigate their influence on the flow structure along the wall and basin of the harbour with aspect ratio of unity, i.e. Length/Breadth. Numerical experiments are compared with the measurements and used to analyse flow patterns in the basin during tidal cycles. It is shown from the results that no-slip closed boundary condition is the most appropriate method with respect to the location of the eddy centre, although the condition underestimates velocity components along the wall.

  • Typhoon Rusa in 2002 was recorded as causing the biggest damage due to flood in our country. With the enormous damage to the land, the flood was totally discharged to the open sea. As a result, in the coastal area, the discharging of a river had a big influence in comparison to the scale of the coastal area, which suffered damaged due to the discharging of the river. As it cleared the land, the load was totally discharging into the sea, where it caused various problems due to its influence on the ecosystem. These included changes to the environment, like a difference in salinity and the inflow of a land load. Therefore, in this study, a Lagrangian particle tracking model was constructed using a flow model capable of solving the behavior of a river plume, supposing Sachon Bay. It is performed the research able to tendency-like valuation and reappearance about real event. The result was that the model was well approximated the sea area tendency and the river plume of the specific event.

  • This paper aims at the elucidation of the characteristics of longshore current profile after wave breaking. Wave breakers are always accompanied by complex turbulent process, wave energy losess occur and the mean water level also varies due to the gradient of radiation stress. These with other factors result in the development of longshore currents. Longshore currents have relations to the alongshore sand transport and to the diffusion of contaminants in nearshore region, thus the understanding and elucidation of them are very important from the engineering point of view. Using the calculated results, the factors such as lateral mixing cofficients, bed shear stress. wave angle. wave steepness and bottom slope. which are influencing the longshore current profile. are examined. Also, by comparing the results of longshore currents with the experimental data obtained by other investigators, the procedure proposed in the present study is shown to be valid.

  • Implicit numerical scheme using fractional step method and FCT is used to improve the computational efficiency of WAM. Square wave test and simulation of typhoon generated waves are conducted to verify the numerical scheme. The applied scheme shows much less numerical diffusion and due to the implicit character of the scheme much larger time steps can be used without numerical instability. For typhoon MAEMI, comparison between the numerical results and the measured data shows good agreement.

  • The water quality in Yongil Bay is getting worse due to the sewage and the waste water from the surrounding industrial complex. The study aims to simulate the current system that is necessary to build ecosystem model for the optium water quality control and clarify the correlation of current system characteristics with water quality in Yongil Bay. To clarify the characteristics of coastal water movement system and verify the applicability of the 3-D model, the current system was simulated using 3-D model baroclinic model which considers tidal current and density effects. As the results of numerical experiments, it is proved the 3-D model is the most applicable on appearing the current system of the stratificated Yongil Bay difference of density. Form the results of simulation considered tidal current only, it can be clarified that the water body flows in the inner bay through the bottom layer and flows out the outer bay through the surface layer in Yongil Bay. And the fresh water from the Hyongsan river and the thermal discharge form POSCO have a little effect on the current system in Yongil Bay, but the diffusion of heat and salt has an important effect upon the formation of the density stratification of the water quality distribution is closely related with the current structure characteristics as well as the tidal residual current system in Yongil Bay.

  • With the assumption of the diffusion dominated flow, a numerical model has been developed for undertow and turbulence structure under the breaking wave by using the $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model. Undertow is a strong mean current which moves seqwards below the level of wave trough in the surf zone. The turbulence, generated by wave breaking in the roller, spreads and dissipates downwards. The governing equations are composed of the equation of motion with the period-averaged shear stress due to waves; $textsc{k}$- and $\varepsilon$-equations with the turbulence energy Production due to wave breaking. They are discretised by the three-level fully implicit scheme, which can be solved by using Thomas algorithm. The model gives good agreements with measurements except for the station that is closest to the breaking point.

  • To investigate the flow pattern and mixing process in Suyoung Bay, field observations and data analyses of tidal current, salinity and suspended sediment (SS) were carried out. Ebb flow is stronger than flood flow, and duration of ebb tide is longer than that of flood tide. Semi-diurnal component of tidal current is predominant, and current rotating clockwise occurs in the central part of the bay. The direction of the residual currents in the central part of the bay and offshore is almost N to WNW, and the speed is 4-14cm/s. Eulerian diffusion coefficients estimated from the current data have the range of $6.2\times10^4-4.2\times10^6\;cm^2/s,$ Salinity structure in Suyoung River estuary during flood tide is of partially mixed type, but is of stratified type during ebb tide. Salinity fluctuation is large at the surface, and the fluctuation decreases with depth. SS concentration in Suyoung River estuary has a higher value during ebb tide than that during flood tide. Salinity and 55 concentrations in the estuary appeared to be very sensitive to the change of river flow.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the distribution of the suspended matter caused by dredging at the northeastern part of Kwangyang Bay and to determine the effect of the single silt protector for it. According to the direction of the tidal current, six sampling stations were chosen from the dredging site to the southeast. At the high tide, the high concentration of the suspended matter was observed below the mid-depth near the dredging site. As the tidal currents were stronger. its concentrations below the mid-depth at the inner stations of the single silt protector were rapidly increased, but those of the outer stations did not show any significant change. The concentrations at the inner stations of the silt protector at that time were from 20~140mg/l and those of the outer stations, which was only about 30 m apart from the inner station, were from 20~30mg/l. It suggests that the large amount of suspended matter caused by dredging were moved to the inner stations near the silt protector at the ebb tide and that the silt protector is very effective for the suspended matter.

  • The water quality in Yeongil Bay is getting worse due to the sewage and the waste water from the surrounding industrial complex The study aims to simulate the current system that is necessary to built ecosystem model for the optium water quality control and clarify the correlation of current system characteristics with water quality in Yongil Bay. To clarify the characteristics of coastal water movement system and verify the applicability of the 3-D model, the current system was simulated using 3-D baroclinic model considered tidal current and density effects. As the results of numerical experiments, it is proved the 3-D model is the most appliable on the Yongil Bay where current flows slowly and the flow direction is varied by depths. From the results of simulation considered tidal current only, It am be clearly said the water in Yongil Bay flows in through the surface layer and flows out through the bottom layer.
