Boussinesq 모델을 이용한 제주 차귀도 해역의 다방향 불규칙파 시뮬레이션 (A Simulation of Directional Irregular Waves at Chagui-Do Sea Area in Jeju Using the Boussinesq Wave Model)

  • Based on the Boussinesq wave model, the wave distribution in the Chagui-Do sea area in Jeju was simulated by applying the directional irregular waves at an incident boundary. The time and spatial variations of monthly mean wave height and period were investigated, which aims to provide basic information on optimal sites for wave power generation. The grid size and time interval of the Boussinesq wave model were validated by examining wave distributions around a surface piercing wall, fixed at sea bottom with a constant slope. Except for the summer season, the significant wave height is dominated by wind waves and appears to be relatively high at the north sea of Chagui-Do, which is open to the ocean, while it is remarkably reduced at the rear sea of Chagui-Do because of its blocking effect on incident waves. In the summer, the significant wave height is higher at the south sea, and it is dominated by the swell waves, which is contributed by the strong south-west wind. The magnitude of significant wave height is the largest in the winter and the lowest in the spring. Annual average of the significant wave height is distinctively high at the west sea close to the Chagui-Do coast, due to a steep variation of water depth and corresponding wave focusing effect. The seasonal and spatial distribution of the wave period around Chagui-Do sea reveals very similar characteristics to the significant wave height. It is suggested that the west sea close to the Chagui-Do coast is the mast promising site for wave power generation.

KVLCC2 선형의 천수영역에서의 자세 변화에 대한 연구 (Study of Ship Squat for KVLCC2 in Shallow Water)

  • Ship squat is a well known phenomenon, which means an additional sinkage and a change of trim when a ship sails in shallow water. As a series of ship squat study, a HPMM(Horizontal Planar Motion Mechanism) test of KVLCC2 model ship to measure a sinkage and a trim in shallow water was conducted. Additionally a CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis was carried out to simulate fluid flows around the ship surface. A change in ship speed, drift angle at three depth conditions(H/T = 1.2, 1.5 & 2.0) is considered for comparing these results. As a result, an increase of the ship speed and the drift angle caused an increase in ship squat in EFD(Experimental Fluid Dynamics), and created a lower pressure on the ship bottom area in CFD. Lastly the sinkage results of KVLCC2 by EFD and CFD are compared to results by three empirical formulas. The tendency of sinkage by EFD and CFD is similar to the results of empirical formulas.

Sensitivity of Input Parameters in the Spectral Wave Model

  • Many researches have been done to define the physical parameters for the wave generation and transformation over a coastal region. However, most of these have been limited to the application of particular conditions, as they are generally too empirical. To yield more reasonable wave estimation using a spectral wave model, it is important to understand how they work for the wave estimation. This study involved a comprehensive sensitivity test against the spectral resolution and the physical source/sink terms of the spectral wave model using SWAN and TOMAWAC, which have the same physical background with several different empirical/theoretical formulations. The tests were conducted for the East Anglian coast, UK, which is characterized by a complex bathymetry due to several shoals and offshore sandbanks. For the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the models' performance with different input conditions, the wave elements and spectrums predicted at representative sites the East Anglia coast were compared/analyzed. The spectral resolution had no significant effect on the model results, but the lowest resolution on the frequency and direction induced underestimations of the wave height and period. The bottom friction and depth-induced breaking terms produced relatively high variations in the wave prediction, depending on which formulation was applied. The terms for the quadruplet and whitecapping had little effect on the wave estimation, whereas the triads tended to predict shorter and higher waves by energy transferring to higher frequencies.

북동 태평양 C-C 해역에 서식하는 중형저서동물 군집 (Meiobenthic Communities in the Deep-sea Sediment of the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone in the Northeast Pacific)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the community structure and distributional pattern of meiobenthos in the deep-sea bottom of the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone of northeastern Pacific during July 2001. Examination of sediment samples collected on the eight survey station showed that there were 10 different types of meiobenthos. The most abundant meiobenthic animals were nematodes in all stations. Sarcomastigophorans, benthic harpacticoids were next abundant meiobenthos. Vertical distribution of meiobenthic animals showed the highest individual numbers in the surface sediment layers of 0-1 cm depth and showed more steep decreasing trend as sediment gets deeper on the stations of high latitude located in $16-17^{\circ}N$. Horizontal distribution of meiobenthic animal in the study area within CCFZ showed high densities of meiobenthos at the stations had few manganese nodules on their sediment surface in the site of low latitude. For size distribution analyses showed that animals which fit into the sieve mesh size of 0.063 mm were abundant.

심해저 망간단괴 개발의 현황과 미래 (Development of Polymetallic Nodules in the NE Equatorial Pacific: Past, Present and Future)

  • In early 1990s, the Korean government has launched a deep-sea research program to secure the stable long-term supply of strategic metallic minerals including Cr, Cu and Ni. Through the pioneering surveys, Korea registered $150,000km^2$ of Mn-nodule field in the Clarion-Clipperton area, the NE equatorial Pacific to the international sea-bed authority (ISA) in 1994. Following the ISA exploration code, the final exclusive exploration area of $75,000km^2$ was assigned in 2002, based on results of eight-year researches of chemico-physical properties of nodules, bottom profiles and sediment properties. Since that time, environmental studies, mining technical developments including robot miner and lifting system and establishment of smelting systems were accompanied with the detailed geophysical studies to decipher the priori mining area until 2009. Major points of the recent Korea Mn-nodule program are deployed on a commercial scale until 2015. In order to meet the goals, we developed a 1/5 scaled robot miner compared to commercial one in 2012 and performed a mining test at the water depth of 1,370 m in 2013. In addition, detailed 25,000 scaled mining maps in the priori area, which can provide operation roots of the miner, will be prepared and an environmental-friendly mining strategy will be pursued based on the environmental impact test and environmental monitoring.

KCS선형의 천수영역에서의 자세 변화에 대한 실험적 연구 (Experimental Study of Ship Squat for KCS in Shallow Water)

  • When a ship sails in shallow water, it is well known that an additional sinkage and trim of the ship(squat) is caused by change of hydrodynamic force between the seabed and the bottom of a ship. In this paper, to examine this phenomenon by model tests, the squat of KCS model ship at a low speed is measured by the vision based ship motion measurement system during HPMM tests. Various combinations of a ship speed, a rudder angle and a drift angle were tested at three depth conditions(H/T = 1.2, 1.5 & 2.0). As a result, increase of the ship's speed and ship's drift angle caused an increase in ship squat, but the ship's rudder angle did not. The rate of increase in ship squat was the most at H/T = 1.2 condition. Lastly these experimental results are compared to the results by three empirical formulas and two CFD methods. The tendency of ship squat measured by experiment is similar to those of empirical formulas.

천해 불규칙파에 의한 해빈변형 및 평형 (Beach Profile Change and Equilibrium due to Irregular Waves in the Nearshore Region)

  • Wells (1967)에 의해 제안된 2nd order 파랑들의 비선형 상호작용에 의한 바닥 부근에서의 유속분포에 대한 왜도(skewness)를 다시 계산하고 재평가하였다. 해안선에 수직한 방향의 퇴적물 이동 방향을 그 유속의 3차 모멘트(왜도)의 부호에 따라 알 수 있음을 보였고, 해빈이 어떤 교란을 받은 후에도 원래의 평형을 회복할 수 있는 새로운 개념의 중립수심을 제안하였다. 또한 계절적인 파랑조건의 변화에 따른 해빈단면의 변화(폭풍-너울 단면)도 종래의 단순한 파랑구배에 의한 구분보다는 파랑의 비선형 상호작용으로 설명되었다. 즉, 파랑의 비선형 작용이 강할 때에는 (폭풍파) 해빈은 침식을 받으며, 반면에 비선형작용이 약할 때에는 (너울파) 해빈은 퇴적됨을 보였다.

태풍 에위니아 (0603) 통과 후 상층해양 변동 특성과 영향 (A Study on Upper Ocean Response to Typhoon Ewiniar (0603) and Its Impact)

  • Upper ocean response to typhoon Ewiniar (0603) and its impact on the following typhoon Bilis (0604) are investigated using observational data and numerical experiments. Data used in this study are obtained from the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (IORS), ARGO, and satellite. Numerical simulations are conducted using 3-dimensional Princeton Ocean Model. Results show that when Ewiniar passes over the western North Pacific, unique oceanic responses are found at two places, One is in East China Sea near Taiwan and another is in the vicinity of IORS. The latter are characterized by a strong sea surface cooling (SSC), $6^{\circ}C$ and $11^{\circ}C$ in simulation and observation, under the condition of typhoon with a fast translation speed (8m $s^{-1}$) and lowering intensity (970 hPa). The record-breaking strong SSC is caused by the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water, which produces a strong vertical temperature gradient within a shallow depth of Yellow Sea. The former are also characterized by a strong SSC, $7.5^{\circ}C$ in simulation, with a additional cooling of $4.5^{\circ}C$ after a storm's passage mainly due to enhanced and maintained upwelling process by the resonance coupling of storm translation speed and the gravest mode internal wave phase speed. The numerical simulation reveals that the Ewiniar produced a unfavorable upper-ocean thermal condition, which eventually inhibited the intensification of the following typhoon Bilis. Statistics show that 9% of the typhoons in western North Pacific are influenced by cold wakes produced by a proceeding typhoon. These overall results demonstrate that upper ocean response to a typhoon even after the passage is also important factor to be considered for an accurate intensity prediction of a following typhoon with similar track.

세격자삼차원 수치 모형에 의한 동중국해의 기상학적으로 유발된 해류순환의 산정 (Computation of Meteorologically-Induced Circulation on the East China Sea using a Fine Grid Three-dimensional Numerical Model)

  • 황해 및 동중국해에서 기상학적으로 유발된 연여균 및 계절적 해류 순환을 산정하기 위해 3次元 수치모형이 이용되었는데 수치모형은 불규칙한 연안경계와 실제 수심을 반영할 수 있도록 구성되었다. 본 연구에서는 전회의 동중국해의 3차원 수치모형 (Choi, 1984)을 제붕역에서의 흐름을 좀더 자세히 재현할 수 있도록 세분화하였는데 모형에 사용된 유한격자체계의 해상도는 위도 4분과 경도 5분으로 구성되었으며 황해 및 동중국해상에서 유속의 3차원적 순환 형태가 산정되어 제시되었다. 수치모형에 의해 계산된 기상학적으로 유발된 恒流 유원은 이 해역의 여러 영역에서 수심(표면, 중간수심, 바닥)別 및 전체 水柱에 대해 해수 문체시간을 계산하는데 이용되었다.

정밀 해저지형 및 해저면 자료를 활용한 동해 남부 연안(울산 일산해변) 생태계 서식지 환경 맵핑 연구 (A Study of Habitat Environment Mapping Using Detailed Bathymetry and Seafloor Data in the Southern Shore of the East Sea(Ilsan Beach, Ulsan))

  • 본 연구는 동해 남부 연안의 울산 일산해변에 위치한 선암 주변 해역에 대해 해저지형 및 해저면 환경 자료를 활용하여 서식지 환경 주제도 맵핑 방법으로 서식지 환경 특성을 분석하였다. 연구지역의 전체적인 수심은 노출암인 선암부터 수심 약 0 m ~ 23 m 범위 내에 분포한다. 선암을 중심으로 서쪽으로는 수심이 얕아지면서 경사가 완만해지고 동쪽으로 가면서 수심이 깊어지며 경사가 급해진다. 동해 대륙주변부에 나타난 우수향 주향이동 단층의 영향으로 선암 주변에 나타나는 해저 암반들의 절개 형태는 주향이동 단층방향과 유사한 주로 N-S 방향을 이루고 있다. 해저지형 자료를 기반으로 해저면 영상과 표층퇴적물 자료를 중첩하고 분석하여 연구지역을 수중암반 지대와 총 3가지 type의 퇴적 지대(역질 사질 퇴적물, 조립한 사질 퇴적층, 세립한 사질 퇴적층)로 분류하였다. 수중암반 지대는 선암 주변과 북쪽 및 남쪽 연안 지대에 주로 분포하지만 선암과 연안 사이의 중간 해역은 암반이 거의 존재하지 않는다. 이 중간 해역은 연안과 외해로 연결되는 해수 이동 통로로서 활발한 퇴적활동이 일어났을 것으로 예상된다. 사질 퇴적물은 연구지역 전체에 넓게 분포하고 있다. 수중영상 및 드론사진 자료로 파악한 선암 최근접 해역 서식지는 주로 자포동물, 완족동물 및 연체동물 등이 우점하여 나타났으며 해수면과 맞닿는 노출암 가장자리 지역에는 다양한 배말 및 담치류 생물이 서식하는 것으로 보여진다. 선암 주변 사질 퇴적물 지대에는 주로 환형동물 및 절지동물이 우점하였으며 연구지역의 해양생물 분포 양상은 해저면 Type, 퇴적물의 조성 및 입도 분포 영향을 많이 받는 것으로 파악된다. 이러한 해저지형, 해저면, 수중영상 중첩을 통한 서식지 환경 맵핑 분석은 해양생태계 구조 및 기능 연계 연구에 많은 기여를 할 것으로 판단된다.
