  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the physical fitness status and health promoting life styles of the workers. For the purpose, 108 workers who attended the exercise program in Inchon branch of KISCO were selected as the subjects. From Oct. 20th to Nov. 30th, in 1998, they were firstly assessed their physical fitness. The items include cardio-respiratory endurance, flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, agility, power, balance, body composition, etc. Secondly, the health promoting life styles were asked by questionnaires about daily life and dietary habits. Both of them were evaluated by 5 or 3 levels as A(very good) to E(very poor) or A (good) to C(poor). Those data were analyzed percentile, mean, standard deviation by SAS program. Major findings are as follows ; 1. The health promoting life styles were generally good, but 43.5% of the subjects didn't exercise at all. Most of them(93.5%) thought about their physical fitness status as lower than average level. About half of them(48.1%) didn't drink alcohol, non smokers were 70.4% of them. But they had poor dietary habits(lower than average level : 79.6%), females were a little bit better than males. The aged group had the poor body compositions, 21.4% of females and 10.0% of males were obese. 2. Physical fitness status of the workers were assessed as two areas, one is health related, the other is physical function related area. In the health related area, females were better than males, in view of age, forties aged group had the highest scores of all items except cardio-respiratory endurance. Among 'A' and 'B' level, muscular endurance was showed most frequently, followed by muscular strength, flexibility, cardiorespiratory endurance. In physical function related status, balance was ranked highly in the portion of over 'B', followed by power, agility. In view of sex, males were better than females for all items except balance, and there were various figures in the status by age groups. 3. Comprehensive assessment scores were poor(under 'D' leves were most frequent), females were better than males, and teenage group had the worst scores. In ages of the physical fitness, generally they had 1 year under their real ages, and females were better than males. In view of age, forties aged group was ranked highly and teenagers had lowest scores.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of hemiplegia on weight shift when mediating task-oriented activities in stroke patients. To this end, from September to December 2019, 33 patients with stroke were randomly assigned and divided into 17 experimental groups and 16 control groups. The experimental group provided task-oriented activities, and the control group general occupational therapy was conducted 3 times a week, 35 minutes per session for a total of 4 weeks. The weight shift of the left and right body was evaluated by the MTD balance system, and an initial evaluation before intervention and a re-evaluation was performed after 4 weeks of intervention. The result were as follows: 1) When evaluating the pre- and post-intervention within the group, the weight shift to the hemiplegia side showed an improvement in the weight shift to the hemiplegia side in both the experimental group(p<.001), and control groups(p<.001, p<.05). 2) In the pre- and post-intervention evaluation between groups, the experimental group showed a statistically significant improvement in weight shift to the control group(p<.01, p<.05). Through future supplementary studies, it is thought that task-oriented activities in the treatment of stroke patients could be usefully applied to promote weight transfer to the paralysis side.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of height of shoe lifts on gait and balance in hemiplegic patients. Twenty-two hemiplegic patients who were receiving rehabilitation treatment at Hanyang University Seoul Hospital and National Rehabilitation Center participated in this study from November 8, 2002 through March 20, 2003. Data analysis using repeated measures ANOVA and Bonferroni method, for a post-test. The results of this study were as follows : First, shoe lift on the height of 3mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm significantly improved, as compared to un-lift status, in gait velocity, PCI, weight bearing(p<0.05). Second, gait velocity was significantly difference between 3mm and 9mm, and between 3mm and 12mm, and weight bearing on the affected side was significantly difference between 3mm and 12mm, and between 6mm and 12mm(p<0.05). Third, after the shoe lift removed was significantly improved in gait velocity, PCI, weight bearing than before shoe lifts being added(p<0.05). These results suggest that shoe lift on the unaffected side may helpful for improving the gait efficiency and symmetrically of weight bearing. Furthermore, persistence of gait efficiency and symmetrically of weight bearing after removing the shoe lift suggests carryover effect of gait training on shoe lift of unaffected side.

  • Objectives: It is well-known that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among firefighters contributes to their job-related stress. However, the relationship between burnout and PTSD in firefighters has rarely been studied. This study therefore explored the association between burnout and its related factors, such as trauma and violence, and PTSD symptoms among firefighters in Korea. Methods: A total of 535 firefighters participated in the Firefighter Research on Enhancement of Safety & Health study at 3 university hospitals from 2016 to 2017. The 535 participants received a baseline health examination, including questionnaires assessing their mental health. A Web-based survey was also conducted to collect data on job-related stress, history of exposure to violence, burnout, and trauma experience. The associations among burnout, its related factors, and PTSD symptoms were investigated using structural equation modeling. Results: Job demands (${\beta}=0.411$, p<0.001) and effort-reward balance (${\beta}=-0.290$, p<0.001) were significantly related to burnout. Burnout (${\beta}=0.237$, p<0.001) and violence (${\beta}=0.123$, p=0.014) were significantly related to PTSD risk. Trauma (${\beta}=0.131$, p=0.001) was significantly related to burnout; however, trauma was not directly associated with PTSD scores (${\beta}=0.085$, p=0.081). Conclusions: Our results show that burnout and psychological, sexual, and physical violence at the hands of clients directly affected participants' PTSD symptoms. Burnout mediated the relationship between trauma experience and PTSD.
