  • Diesel particulate matter(DPM) often contains small amounts of metal as a minor component but this metal may contribute to adverse health effects. Knowledge of the mechanism for particle formation as well as the size preference of the trace metals is critical to understanding the potential for health concerns. To achieve this, the size and the composition of each particle should be optimally measured at the same time. Single particle mass spectrometer(SPMS) would be the best tool for this objective. In this paper, we therefore will introduce new findings about the mechanism and distribution of the trace metals in DPM, derived from a study where an SPMS was used to analyze freshly emitted DPM.

  • We conducted a survey with the objective of studying the teachers' perspective of their students' learning in traditional calculus and its teaching strategies. This survey was targeted at mathematics teachers of the junior colleges, polytechnics and universities in Singapore. In this paper we present findings of the first part of our survey. The first part addresses various issues related to the mathematics teachers' perception of the current status of calculus education in Singapore. The findings of this study will be unique in Singapore context because, according to the best of our knowledge, no such survey on calculus education has ever been undertaken in Singapore.

  • The objective of this paper is to design a force feedback controller for bilateral control of a master-slave manipulator system using adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control. In a bilateral control system, the motion of the master device is followed by slave the one. While the force applied to the slave is reflected on the master. In this paper a proposed controller applied to the system. Adding a switching control term to the input robustness is improved. Also the knowledge of the system dynamics is not needed. The computer simulation results show the performance of the proposed adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controller.

  • Conventional expert systems has been criticized due to its lack of capability to adapt to the changing decision-making environments. In literature, many methods have been proposed to make expert systems more environment-adaptive by incorporating fuzzy logic and neural networks. The objective of this paper is to propose a new approach to building a self-evolving expert system inference mechanism by integrating fuzzy neural network and fuzzy rule extraction technique. The main recipe of our proposed approach is to fuzzify the training data, train them by a fuzzy neural network, extract a set of fuzzy rules from the trained network, organize a knowledge base, and refine the fuzzy rules by applying a pruning algorithm when the decision-making environments are detected to be changed significantly. To prove the validity, we tested our proposed self-evolving expert systems inference mechanism by using the bankruptcy data, and compared its results with the conventional neural network. Non-parametric statistical analysis of the experimental results showed that our proposed approach is valid significantly.

  • This paper develops channel reallocation methodologies for survival transmission networks, Any failure on a high-speed telecommunication network needs to be restored rapidly and a channel real-location methodology has an important role for the fast restoration. This paper considers the channel reallocation problems under a line restoration with distributed control, where the line restoration restores the failed channels by rerouting the channels along the two alternative routes. The objective is to determine the optimal number of rerouting channels on the alternative rerouting paths of a given transmission network, where the optimality criteria are the first, the last and the mean restoration times. For each criterion, the problem is formulated as a mixed integer programming and the optimal channel reallocation algorithm is suggested based upon the characterization of the optimal solution.

  • The problem of establishing the servo system to reach the desired location keeping all features in the field of view and following a straight line is considered. In addition, robustness of camera calibration parameters is considered in this paper. The proposed approach is based on switching from position-based visual servoing (PBVS) to image-based visual servoing (IBVS) and allows the camera path to follow a straight line. To achieve the objective, a pose estimation method is required; the camera's target pose is estimated from the obtained images without the knowledge of the object. A switched control law moves the camera equipped to a robot end-effector near the desired location following a straight line in Cartesian space and then positions it to the desired pose with robustness to camera calibration error. Finally simulation results show the feasibility of the proposed visual servoing technique.

  • This study relates to develop a quantitative method through which promising technology-based business items can be discovered and selected. For this study, we utilized patent trend analysis, technology-industry concordance analysis, and keyword co-occurrence analysis of US patents. By analyzing patent trends and technology-industry concordance, we were able to find out the emerging industry trends : prevalence of bio industry, service industry, and B2C business. From the direct and co-occurrence analysis of newly discovered patent keywords in the year, 2000, 28 promising business item candidates were extracted. Finally, the promising item candidates were prioritized using 4 business attractiveness determinants; market size, product life cycle, degree of the technological innovation, and coincidence with the industry trends. This result implicates that reliable discovery and selection of promising technology-based business items can be performed by a quantitative, objective and low- cost process using knowledge discovery method from patent database instead of peer review.

  • The process of determining whether, when, where and how to intervene, of deciding on optimum allocation of resources and minimizing the cost is a very complex problem: different track sections tend to behave differently under the effects of loading; decision-making processes for maintenance work are closely interrelated technically and economically; decision-making for maintenance plans is based on a large quantity of technical and economic information, extensive knowledge and above all experience. For that reason, It is considered very important to develope objective and computer-aided decision-making support system for track maintenance plan. On this paper, we made a survey of the state-of-art of decision-making support systems for track maintenance which were developed and used abroad and reviewed requirements of system and present the plan of develope decision-making support system for track maintenance appropriate to local condition.

  • In our daily practice, we think about the diagnosis of our patient and get into a situation wherein we have to make a clinical decision. Diagnosis and treatment come from the knowledge and experiences that each dentist should have, but sometimes, we can have doubts on our decisions. "On what evidence did I make such decision? Was that really right?" Drawing our attention these days as a possible answer to this question, evidence-based dentistry seeks to apply the best available evidence gained from the scientific method to medical decision making. To make a good decision, the strength of evidence is assessed. Specifically, randomized controlled trial, systematic review, and meta-analysis are considered the highest level of evidence; cohort study, case control study, case series, animal study, bench test, and biological plausibility follow. With the approach of evidence-based dentistry, we can make objective, scientifically sound clinical decisions. It is also patient-oriented, incorporating clinical experiences and stressing good judgments; thorough and comprehensive, it uses transparent methodology. That is the reason evidence-based dentistry can be better than other assessment methods when we make a clinical decision in modern dentistry.
