  • Dynamic object detection is essential for ensuring safe and reliable autonomous driving. Recently, light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based object detection has been introduced and shown excellent performance on various benchmarks. Although LiDAR sensors have excellent accuracy in estimating distance, they lack texture or color information and have a lower resolution than conventional cameras. In addition, performance degradation occurs when a LiDAR-based object detection model is applied to different driving environments or when sensors from different LiDAR manufacturers are utilized owing to the domain gap phenomenon. To address these issues, a sensor-fusion-based object detection and classification method is proposed. The proposed method operates in real time, making it suitable for integration into autonomous vehicles. It performs well on our custom dataset and on publicly available datasets, demonstrating its effectiveness in real-world road environments. In addition, we will make available a novel three-dimensional moving object detection dataset called ETRI 3D MOD.

  • Recent deep learning algorithms for object detection in real-time play a crucial role in various applications such as autonomous driving, traffic monitoring, health care, and water quality monitoring. The size of small objects, in particular, significantly impacts the accuracy of detection models. However, data containing small objects can lead to underfitting issues in models. Therefore, this study developed a deep learning model capable of quickly detecting small objects to provide more accurate predictions. The RE-SOD (Residual block based Small Object Detector) developed in this research enhances the detection performance for small objects by using RGB separation preprocessing and residual blocks. The model achieved an accuracy of 1.0 in image classification and an mAP50-95 score of 0.944 in object detection. The performance of this model was validated by comparing it with real-time detection models such as YOLOv5, YOLOv7, and YOLOv8.

  • A study on agricultural automation became more important. In Korea, sweet persimmon farmers spend a lot of time and effort on classifying profitable persimmons. In this paper, we propose and implement an efficient grading algorithm for persimmons before shipment. We gathered more than 1,750 images of persimmons, and the images were graded and labeled for classifications purpose. Our main algorithm is based on EfficientDet object detection model but we implemented more exquisite method for better classification performance. In order to improve the precision of classification, we adopted a machine learning algorithm, which was proposed by PyCaret machine learning workflow generation library. Finally we acquired an improved classification model with the accuracy score of 81%.

  • This paper reports a novel object-detection technique in video sequences. The proposed algorithm consists of detection of objects in illuminated and occluded videos by using object features and a neural network technique. It consists of two functional modules: region-based object feature extraction and continuous detection of objects in video sequences with region features. This scheme is proposed as an enhancement of the Lowe's scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) object detection method. This technique solved the high computation time problem of feature generation in the SIFT method. The improvement is achieved by region-based feature classification in the objects to be detected; optimal neural network-based feature reduction is presented in order to reduce the object region feature dataset with winner pixel estimation between the video frames of the video sequence. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme achieves better overall performance than other object detection techniques, and region-based feature detection is faster in comparison to other recent techniques.

  • As commercial drones have been widely used, concerns for collision accidents with people and invading secured properties are emerging. The detection of drone is a challenging problem. The deep learning based object detection techniques for detecting drones have been applied, but limited to the specific cases such as detection of drones from bird and/or background. We have tried not only detection of drones, but classification of different drones with an end-to-end model. YOLOv2 is used as an object detection model. In order to supplement insufficient data by shooting drones, data augmentation from collected images is executed. Also transfer learning from ImageNet for YOLOv2 darknet framework is performed. The experimental results for drone detection with average IoU and recall are compared and analysed.

  • Many researchers conducted the effort for improving the classification accuracy of satellite image. Most of the study has used optical spectrum information of each pixel for image classification. By applying this method for high resolution satellite image, number of class becomes increase. This situation is remarkable for house, because the roof of house has variety of many colors. Even if the classification is carried out for many classes, roof color information of each house is not necessary. Most of the case, we need the information that object is house or not. In this study, we propose the method for detecting the object by using Genetic Algorithms (GA). Aircraft was selected as object. It is easy for this object to detect in the airport. An aircraft was taken as a template. Object image was taken from QuickBird. Target image includes an aircraft and Haneda Airport. Chromosome has four or five parameters which are composed of number of template, position (x,y), rotation angle, rate of enlarge. Good results were obtained in the experiment.

  • Multi-object tracking (MOT) is a vital component in understanding the surrounding environments. Previous research has demonstrated that MOT can successfully detect and track surrounding objects. Nonetheless, inaccurate classification of the tracking objects remains a challenge that needs to be solved. When an object approaching from a distance is recognized, not only detection and tracking but also classification to determine the level of risk must be performed. However, considering the erroneous classification results obtained from the detection as the track class can lead to performance degradation problems. In this paper, we discuss the limitations of classification in tracking under the classification uncertainty of the detector. To address this problem, a class update module is proposed, which leverages the class uncertainty estimation of the detector to mitigate the classification error of the tracker. We evaluated our approach on the VisDrone-MOT2021 dataset, which includes multi-class and uncertain far-distance object tracking. We show that our method has low certainty at a distant object, and quickly classifies the class as the object approaches and the level of certainty increases. In this manner, our method outperforms previous approaches across different detectors. In particular, the You Only Look Once (YOLO)v8 detector shows a notable enhancement of 4.33 multi-object tracking accuracy (MOTA) in comparison to the previous state-of-the-art method. This intuitive insight improves MOT to track approaching objects from a distance and quickly classify them.
