Addressing User Requirements in Open Source Software: The Role of Online Forums

  • User satisfaction has always been important in the success of software, regardless of whether it is closed and proprietary or open source software (OSS). OSS users are geographically distributed and include technical as well as novice users. However, it is generally believed that if OSS was more usable, its popularity would increase tremendously. Hence, users and their requirements need to be addressed in the priorities of an OSS environment. Online public forums are a major medium of communication for the OSS community. The research model of this work studies the relationship between user requirements in open source software and online public forums. To conduct this research, we used a dataset consisting of 100 open source software projects in different categories. The results show that online forums play a significant role in identifying user requirements and addressing their requests in open source software.

Optimal Pricing Strategies for Open Source Support Providers

  • The market for commercial open source software (OSS) has been rapidly growing with the proliferation of OSS. One way to commercialize OSS is the support model, which has been adopted by leading OSS firms such as Red Hat and JBoss. Despite the growing interest in OSS commercialization, little research has provided OSS support providers with a pricing guideline. In this paper, we examine the optimal pricing strategies for OSS support providers. Our benchmark is a monopoly case in which we investigate a startup software vendor's incentive to choose the OSS support regime over the proprietary one. Then we extend the model to a duopoly case in which OSS under the support regime competes against proprietary software. We characterize the conditions under which the OSS support model is viable under competition. We believe that our results offer insights to the OSS vendors who consider commercializing their OSS with a support model.

소프트웨어 유통에 있어 공개소프트웨어 중개자의필요성에 대한 연구 (A Study on the necessity of Open Source Software Intermediaries in the Software Distribution Channel)

  • Purpose - The development and implementation of OSS (Open Source Software) led to a dramatic change in corporate IT infrastructure, from system server to smart phone, because the performance, reliability, and security functions of OSS are comparable to those of commercial software. Today, OSS has become an indispensable tool to cope with the competitive business environment and the constantly-evolving IT environment. However, the use of OSS is insufficient in small and medium-sized companies and software houses. This study examines the need for OSS Intermediaries in the Software Distribution Channel. It is expected that the role of the OSS Intermediary will be reduced with the improvement of the distribution process. The purpose of this research is to prove that OSS Intermediaries increase the efficiency of the software distribution market. Research design, Data, and Methodology - This study presents the analysis of data gathered online to determine the extent of the impact of the intermediaries on the OSS market. Data was collected using an online survey, conducted by building a personal search robot (web crawler). The survey period lasted 9 days during which a total of 233,021 data points were gathered from sourceforge.net and Apple's App store, the two most popular software intermediaries in the world. The data collected was analyzed using Google's Motion Chart. Results - The study found that, beginning 2006, the production of OSS in the Sourceforge.net increased rapidly across the board, but in the second half of 2009, it dropped sharply. There are many events that can explain this causality; however, we found an appropriate event to explain the effect. It was seen that during the same period of time, the monthly production of OSS in the App store was increasing quickly. The App store showed a contrasting trend to software production. Our follow-up analysis suggests that appropriate intermediaries like App store can enlarge the OSS market. The increase was caused by the appearance of B2C software intermediaries like App store. The results imply that OSS intermediaries can accelerate OSS software distribution, while development of a better online market is critical for corporate users. Conclusion - In this study, we analyzed 233,021 data points on the online software marketplace at Sourceforge.net. It indicates that OSS Intermediaries are needed in the software distribution market for its vitality. It is also critical that OSS intermediaries should satisfy certain qualifications to play a key role as market makers. This study has several interesting implications. One implication of this research is that the OSS intermediary should make an effort to create a complementary relationship between OSS and Proprietary Software. The second implication is that the OSS intermediary must possess a business model that shares the benefits with all the participants (developer, intermediary, and users).The third implication is that the intermediary provides an OSS of high quality like proprietary software with a high level of complexity. Thus, it is worthwhile to examine this study, which proves that the open source software intermediaries are essential in the software distribution channel.

  • 본 연구는 미국과 한국의 오픈 소스 소프트웨어(OSS) 기업의 사례를 중심으로 기존 기술추격이론이 지식 집약적인 OSS 산업에서도 적용되는 지를 분석하고 후발기업들이 기술추격의 발판을 마련할 시사점을 연구하는 것을 그 목적으로 한다. 이를 위하여, 국내 SW 기업들의 인터뷰와 미국 SW 기업들의 기록문서 분석 및 2차 출처들의 검토를 통한 실증적 연구를 수행하였으며, 패러다임의 변곡점 판별과 기술체제의 비교라는 분석의 틀을 이용하여 소프트웨어(SW) 기업의 기술추격 과정을 연구하였다. 본 연구결과, OSS 기업의 기술추격을 설명하는데 있어 기존 기술추격이론의 이론적 논거가 유효하지 않다고 판별하였고 기술체제의 비교 결과, 후발기업의 기술추격을 효과적으로 촉진하는 유효한 요소들을 파악하였다. 또한 저자들은 OSS 기업의 사례연구 결과를 통하여 탈 추격이론이 주장하는 기존 이론의 제약을 진단하고 OSS 의 낮은 전유성이 역설적으로 기술추격을 촉진하는 새로운 기술 체제에 대한 해석을 논의한다.

  • 본 논문은 오픈소스소프트웨어와 사적독점 소프트웨어를 비교하고 이를 바탕으로, 오픈소스소프트웨어가 독창적으로 가치를 창출할 수 있는 비즈니스 모델을 제안하는데 목적이 있다. 우리가 제안하는 오프소스소프트웨어의 새로운 비즈니스 모델은 맞춤형 소프트웨어를 제공하는 것이다. 이는 사적독점소프트웨어가 소프트웨어 산업에 미치는 좋지 않은 영향인 고착화와 거래비용을 소프트웨어 유통을 통해 제거할 수 있는 비즈니스 모형이다. 맞춤형 소프트웨어는 라이센스 판매 위주로 수익을 창출해 온 방식을 대신해 가치사슬 상의 관련 산업을 통해 가치를 창출함으로써 효율적인 소프트웨어 시장을 구축한다. 소프트웨어의 가치를 증대할 수 있도록 유통시킴으로써 라이센스 판매가 아니더라도 산업 전반의 가치를 높여서 시장의 성장과 수익을 도모할 수 있다.

User Resistance in the Adoption of Open Source Software

  • The emergence of open source software (OSS) with its successful projects and its most prominent advantages creates a vast interest among academics and practitioners. However, it has been found that focusing on the developments of OSS to be successful is not adequate and the adoption of OSS by uses is also very important. Although there are a great number of useful and easy to use OSS has been developed, the adoption of OSS and usage in the market is very low. Based on the technology equity implementation model (EIM), this study examines user resistance in the adoption of OSS (i.e., switching from the current system to OSS). A survey has done regarding the adoption of Linux as the case of study. We have found that user resistance to change has negative effect on adoption intention, and switching benefits, switching costs and perceived value have significant relationships with user resistance to change.

  • 본 연구는 오픈소스SW의 기술적 접근이 아닌 개발자와 소비자들이 함께 참여하고 공유할 수 있는 소셜 플랫폼을 활용한 프로슈머(Prosumer)마케팅의 관점에서 OSS의 마케팅연구에 기여점을 제시하고자한다. 이를 위하여 OSS의 온라인 브랜드 커뮤니티 활성화가 소셜 미디어 플랫폼을 활용한 OSS의 프로슈머 마케팅에 미치는 영향을 알아보고 최종적으로 소셜 미디어 플랫폼 사용자들의 OSS에 대한 충성도를 알아보고자 하였다. 연구의 결과로서 온라인 브랜드 커뮤니티의 활성화 요인들 중 커뮤니티의 콘텐츠, 고객지원, UI, 그리고 커뮤니티 활동에 대한 유/무상의 보상이 OSS 소셜 미디어 플랫폼 활성화에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 브랜드의 명성은 OSS 소셜 미디어 플랫폼 활성화에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, OSS 소셜 미디어 플랫폼의 활성화가 OSS의 충성도에 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 급변하는 ICT 생태계에서 OSS 비즈니스의 새로운 해법으로서 소셜 플랫폼기반 프로슈머 마케팅이 중요한 전략이 될 수 있다는 것을 보여주는 결과라고 할 수 있다.

  • As Open Source Software(OSS) recently invigorates, many companies actively use the OSSes in their business software. With such OSS invigoration, our web application is developed in order to provide the safety in using the OSSes, and update the information on the new vulnerabilities and the patches at all times by crawling the web pages of the relevant OSS home pages and the managing organizations of the vulnerabilities. By providing the updated information, our application helps the OSS users and developers to be aware of such security issues, and gives them to work in the safer environment from security risks. In addition, our application can be used as a security platform to greatly contribute to preventing potential security incidents not only for companies but also for individual developers.

Customer Satisfaction from Open Source Software Services in the Presence of Commercially Licensed Software

  • The limited literature on Open Source Software (OSS) customers' adoption does not provide explanations on how OSS services are adopted by customers in the presence of functionally superior commercially licensed software (CLS). This paper aims to uncover the process that shapes customer satisfaction of OSS services in comparison to CLS. Expectation Disconfirmation Theory (EDT) is adapted and integrated with pre implementation factor model that influences software customers' expectations including cost, reputation, and experience. The constructed research model is empirically validated using a field survey of OSS and CLS database management system (DBMS) customers in Korea. The theoretical contribution of the paper lies on the application of EDT to explain the wide adoption of OSS DBMS services in the presence of functionally superior CLS DBMSs. Furthermore, this paper integrates EDT with pre-implementation factors for customers' expectations, which has been considered a limitation of the theory. Among the practical contributions, this study draws attention to the substantive differences between OSS and CLS customers' expectations. Additionally, it offers initial explanations for the differences in customer behavior for OSS and CLS and the way that customers' expectations and actual performance are mingled together to form customer satisfaction.

함수 수준 특징정보 기반의 오픈소스 소프트웨어 모듈 탐지 (Detection of an Open-Source Software Module based on Function-level Features)

  • OSS(Open-Source Software)의 사용 증가와 함께 라이선스 위반, 취약한 소스코드 재사용 등에 의한 분쟁 및 피해가 빈번해지고 있다. 이에, 실행파일(바이너리) 수준에서 프로그램에 OSS 모듈이 포함되었는지 여부를 확인하는 기술이 필요해졌다. 본 논문에서는 바이너리에서 함수 수준의 특징정보를 사용하여 OSS 모듈을 탐지하는 기법을 제안한다. 기존 소프트웨어 특징정보(버스마크) 기반 도용 탐지 기법들은 프로그램 전체 간 유사성을 비교하기 때문에 프로그램의 일부로 포함된 OSS 모듈들을 탐지하는데 부적합하다. 본 논문에서는, 함수 수준의 실행명령어, 제어 흐름 그래프(Control Flow Graph)와 개선된 함수 수준 구조적 특징정보를 추출하고 유사성을 비교하여 OSS 모듈의 임의 사용 여부를 탐지한다. 제안기법의 효율성과 각 특징정보들의 OSS 탐지 성능을 평가하기 위해, 특징정보량, OSS 모듈 탐지 시간 및 정확도, 컴파일러 최적화에 대한 강인성을 실험하였다.
