  • An aqueous solution of $Ca(OH)_2$ containing a small amount of dissolved $Sr(OH)_2$ was carbonated with $CO_2$ gas, and the effects of the reaction temperature and $Sr(OH)_2$ on the carbonation were investigated. The higher the reaction temperature and the larger the ratio of $Sr(OH)_2(aq)$ to $Ca(OH)_2(aq)$, which amounts to the larger the ratio of $OH^-$ to $CO_2(aq)$, the better pillar aragonite was formed. $Sr(OH)_2$ played an important role in the formation of pillar aragonite, because it is easily formed itself into rhombic $SrCO_3$ during the initial period of carbonation process and acting as a seed for the pillar aragonite of similar morphology. In addition, due to its substantially higher solubility compared with $Ca(OH)_2$, $OH^-$ concentration in the carbonation mixture and subsequently $CO_3^{2-}$ necessary for the crystal growth are increased.

  • For the process control of silicon nitride gelcasting, the effect of MeOH on the apparent gel induction time of slip, drying rate, and mechanical property of gelcast body were investigated. The apparent gel induction time showed maximum at 10~20 vol% MeOH and the drying rate of gelcast body increased in the ranged of 25~40%. The gelcast body was still machinable in the 40% of MeOH, though the mechanical property and relative density slightly decreased with increasing the amount of MeOH.

  • The rapid quenching dynamics of F center excitation by OH- defects in KCl crystals are investigated by monitoring ground state absorption bleach recovery, using a picosecond streak camera absorption spectrometer. F center absorption bleach in OH--doped crystals shows three distinguishable recovery components with the current temporal resolution, designated as slow, medium and fast components. The slow one is due to the normal relaxation process of F* centers as found in OH--free crystals. The others are consequent on energy transfer from electronically excited F centers to OH--vibrational levels. The fast component is a minor energy transfer process and resulting from the relaxation of somewhat distant, not the closest, associated pairs of F* and OH- defects. The energy transfer between widely separated F* and OH- defects opens up a recovery process via the medium component which is assisted by OH- librations, lattice vibrations and OH- dipole reorientations. The quenching behaviors of F* luminescence and photoionization by OH- are explained well by the relaxation process of the medium component.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the difference of ginsenoside compositions in crude ginseng saponins prepared by five different methods including three new methods. Two known methods are hot methanol(MeOH) extraction/n-butanol(n-BuOH) fractionation and hot MeOH extraction/Diaion HP-20 adsorption/MeOH elution. Three new methods are hot MeOH extraction/cation AG 50W $absorption/H_2O$ elution/n-BuOH extraction, cool MeOH extraction/Diaion HP-20 adsorption/MeOH elution and direct extraction with ethyl acetate(EtOAc)/n-BuOH. Analysis of ginsenoside composition in the crude saponins by conventional HPLC/RI(Refractive Index) did not show great difference between methods except EtOAc/n-BuOH method. However, HPLC/ELSD (evaporative light scattering detector) employing gradient mobile phase afforded fine resolution of ginsenoside Rf, $Rg_1$ and $Rh_1$, and great difference of ginsenoside compositions between methods. LC/MS revealed that large amount of prosapogenins were produced during the pass through the cation exchange (AG 50W) column being strongly acidic. Six major ginsenosides such as $Rb_1,w;Rb_2,$ Rc, Rd, Re and $Rg_1$, 5 prosapogenins and one chikusetsusaponin were identified by LC/MS. A newly established HPLC method employing ODS column and gradient mobile phase of $KH_2PO_4/CH_3CN$ revealed that malonyl ginsenosides were detected only in the crude saponin obtained from cool MeOH extraction.

  • Distribution data of boric acid in water is necessary to develop a hydrometallurgical process for the recovery of boron from primary and secondary resources containing boron. Boric acid exists as $B(OH)_3$ and $B(OH)_4{^-}$ when solution pH is less than 6 and higher than 12, respectively. In the solution pH range of 6-11, condensation reaction between $B(OH)_3$ and $B(OH)_4{^-}$ results in the formation of some polymers. The mole fraction of the boron polymers such as $B_3O_3(OH)_4{^-}$ and $B_4O_5(OH){_4}^{2-}$ is proportional to the concentration of boric acid.

  • Ultrafine $Mg(OH)l_2$and MgO powders were recovered from the waste solution containing $Mg^{++}$ which was a by-product of SHS (Self-propagating High temperature Synthesis)process. The optimum experimental conditions to prepare $Mg(OH)_2$were 13.0 of pH and 0.7M of $Mg^{++}$ content with addition of 9M of KOH as a pH regulator in acid leaching solution. Complete pre-cipitation of Mg(OH)$_2$from $Mg^{++}$ was realized at that condition. The dehydration reaction of the prepared Mg(OH)$_2$was studied by DSC, and the result was used for calcination process. In order to obtain MgO powder, dried Mg(OH)2 powder was calcined at $400~450^{\circ}C$. Particle size and shape of the prepared $Mg(OH)_2$and MgO powder was similar to those of the commercial powders.

  • The toxicities of phenanthrene (PH) and pyrene (PY) are less than benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), but both compounds are found in higher concentrations in the air, feed, and food. Most PAHs are metabolized to hydroxylated compounds by the hepatic cytochrome P450 monooxigenases system. Metabolites are excreted into urine and feces. We determined concentrations of PH, PY and BaP in muscle and hydroxylated metabolites, 3-OH-PH, 1-OH-PY, and 3-OH-BaP, respectively, in urine from dairy cattle (n = 24). We also evaluated the relationship between parent compounds in muscle and their metabolites in urine. Concentrations of PH and PY in muscle ranged from 0.7~4.8 ng/g ($1.8{\pm}1.7$) and 0.4~4.1 ng/g ($1.2{\pm}1.2$), respectively. Concentrations of 3-OH-PH and 1-OH-PY in urine ranged from 0.1~5.9 ng/ml ($2.9{\pm}3.7$) and 0.5~3.6 ng/ml ($1.9{\pm}2.3$), respectively. Correlation coefficient for PY concentration in muscle versus 1-OH-PY in urine was 0.657 and for PH concentration in muscle versus 3-OH-PH in urine was 0.579. Coefficient determination for PY and PH concentrations in muscle was 0.886 and for 1-OH-PY and 3-OH-PH in urine was 0.834. This study suggests that 1-OH-PY and 3-OH-PH could be used as biomarkers for PAHs exposure in dairy cattle.

  • The possible minimum structures of $C_{60}(CH_2)_nOH$ (n=0~2) and $C_{60}(OH)_2$have been optimized using density functional theory (DFT) with the 6-311G (d,f) basis set. The harmonic vibrational frequencies and IR intensities are also determined to confirm that all the optimized geometries are true minima. Also zero-point vibrational energies (ZPVE) have been considered to predict the binding energies. The predicted binding energy of $C_{60}CH_2OH$ is about 10 kcal/mol more stable than the binding energy of $C_{60}OH$.

  • The extraction yield of MeOH extract of green teas, oolong tea and black tea were 3 to 5, 4 to 5, and 5 to 7 fold higher than those of EtOH and EtAC extract, respectively. The amount of total catechins of EtAC extract of the black tea, and of the green teas and oolong tea were three- and two-fold higher than that of EtOH or MeOH extract of the corresponding teas, respectively. The antioxidative activities of EtOH, MeOH and EtAc extract were considerably higher than that of BHT and $dl-{\alpha}-tocopherol$ at 200 ppm level. The antioxidative activities of EtOH and MeOH extract at 200 and 500 ppm level, and of EtAc extract at 200 ppm level varied depending on the type of tea as follows : green tea I > green tea II > green tea III > oo-long tea> black tea. The antioxidative activity increased as the content of EGC increased. But the antioxidative activity of MeOH extract at 1000 ppm level, and of EtAc extract at 500 and 1000 ppm level were not affected by the content of EGC and EGCG.

  • Background: Sputum decontamination with NALC-NaOH (N-acetyl-L-cysteine-sodium hydroxide) is known to better detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tb) by culture than that with using NaOH, which is widely used in Korean hospitals. In this report, sputum samples collected from pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patients were treated with either NaOH or NALC-NaOH, and we compared the results of smear and culture positivity to determine whether the NALC-NaOH treatment method improves culture positivity in the sputum samples, and especially for those sputum samples that are smear negative and scanty. Methods: For each decontamination method, 436 sputum samples from pulmonary TB patients in the National Masan Tuberculosis Hospital were collected for this study. Sputum from a patient was collected two times for the first and second day of sampling time, and these samples were employed for the decontamination process by performing the 4% NaOH and NALC-2% NaOH treatment methods, respectively, for detecting M. tb by an AFB (Acid Fast Bacilli) smear and also by culture in solid Ogawa medium. Results: The NaOH and NALC-NaOH treatment methods did not significantly affect the AFB smear positivity of the sputum samples (33.0% vs 39.0%, respectively, p=0.078). However, the culture positive percents of M. tb in the Ogawa medium treated with NALC-NaOH and NaOH were 39.7% and 28.0%, respectively, which was a significantly different (p=0.0003). This difference in culture was more prominent in the sputum samples that were smear negative (the positive percents with NALC-NaOH and NaOH were 15.8% and 7.2%, respectively, p=0.0017) and scanty (NALC-NaOH and NaOH were 60.8% and 42.9%, respectively, p=0.036), but not for a smear that was 1+ or higher (p>0.05). Conclusion: NALC-NaOH treatment is better than NaOH treatment for the detection of M. tb by culture, but not by smear, and especially when the AFB smear is negative and scanty.
