The Relationship between Communication Self-confidence, Critical Thinking Disposition and Nursing Professionalism in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 의사소통 자신감, 비판적사고 성향, 간호 전문직관의 관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to find the qualities of nursing students who need to improve their communication self-confidence by identifying their communication self-confidence, critical thinking disposition, and nursing professionalism. The study's data was collected from August 2019 to September 2019. Informed consent was received from 122 students who were in their senior of nursing college. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS WIN 20.0 program. As a result of the study, the score for communication self-confidence was 32.31, the score for a critical thinking disposition was 101.34, and the score for nursing professionalism was 3.78. Communication confidence was found to have a significant positive correlation with critical thinking tendency(r=.568, p<.001) and nursing professional intuition(r=.282, p<.001). The critical thinking tendency was found to have a positive correlation with communication confidence(r=.568, p<.001) and nursing professional intuition(r=.361, p<.001). Nursing professional intuition was also found to have a positive correlation with communication confidence(r=.282, p<.05) and critical thinking propensity(r=.361, p<.001).

The Effects of Core Fundamental Nursing Program on Core Fundamental Nursing Skills Competency, Clinical Competency and Problem Solving Process (핵심기본간호술 교육프로그램이 핵심기본간호술 수행능력, 임상수행능력 및 문제해결과정에 미치는 효과)

  • This study was pre-experimental research designed to compare the differences between pre-and post the effect of core fundamental education program of senior nursing student′s core fundamental nursing skills, clinical competency and problem solving process for one semester. Core fundamental education program which consists of three steps, 12 session. The subjects of this study were 192 graduates of one nursing college and surveyed from March 20 to June 23, 2017. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the paired t-test, t-test, ANOVA by SAS for Windows(ver. 9.8) and AMOS(ver. 20.0) As a result, pre-post recognition level of core fundamental education program was nursing skills competency pre $(3.42{\pm}.42)$ and post $3.88({\pm}.61)$, clinical competency was pre $3.74({\pm}.47)$ and post $3.98({\pm}.67)$. The core fundamental nursing skills(p=.017), clinical competency(p=.041) increased significantly after education program. Core fundamental nursing skills, clinical competency and problem solving process was significantly different according to male group(p=.003/p=.013/p=.005), high satisfaction group in nursing major(p=<.000/p=.009/p=<.000), confidence improvement group(p=.044/p=.047/p=.004) at the core skill contest. In conclusion, this study showed that the core fundamental nursing education program of senior nursing students had a positive effect on core fundamental nursing skills and clinical competency.

Evaluation of the Standardized Patients(SP) Managed Instruction for a Clinical Maternity Nursing Course (표준화 환자를 활용한 모성간호학 실습 학습방법 효과 분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the learning effect of a standardized patient managed instruction program for a clinical maternity nursing course. Methods: The SP managed instruction was made for clinical cases in intrapartum and postpartum nursing care. The SP managed instruction was evaluated by using a quasi-experimental, nonequivalent control group post-test design with separate classes of students attending clinical maternity nursing classes at a nursing school in Incheon. Control groups were taught by traditional lecture/model method and experimental groups were taught by SP managed instruction. Data was collected from September 2009 to February 2010. Results: 1. There was no significant difference between the experimental group and control group in identifying relevant data (z=-1.418, p=.156) and necessary nursing skills performance (z=-.643, p=.520) for intrapartum nursing care. In addition, there was no significant difference between the two groups in identifying relevant data (z=-.264, p=.782) and necessary nursing skill (z=-.342, p=.732) for postpartum nursing care. 2. In clinical nursing skill performances the total score was statistically significantly higher in the experimental group than the control group (intrapartum care z=-4.181, p=.000, postpartum care z=-4.279, p=.000). 3. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups (intrapartum care z=-3.731, p=.000, postpartum care z=-4.066, p=.000). Conclusion: In conclusion, the SP methodis effective in teaching clinical maternity nursing for student nurses and it is necessary to develop SP instruction courses for many areas in the clinical nursing education field.

Associations between job stress, social support, and nursing professionalism among nurses in postgraduate courses (학업병행 간호사의 직무스트레스, 사회적 지지와 간호전문직관의 관계)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the associations between job stress, social support, and nursing professionalism among nurses taking postgraduate courses, and to explore the factors influencing their nursing professionalism. Methods: The participants were 121 nurses who were enrolled in graduate school master's or doctoral programs in Korea. Data were collected from June 30 to August 31, 2021, using an internet-based self-report questionnaire. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis using the IBM SPSS 23.0 program. Results: The mean scores of job stress, social support, and nursing professionalism among the participants were 2.47 out of 4, 4.06 out of 5, and 3.47 out of 5, respectively. There were statistically significant differences in nursing professionalism among the participants according to the degree program (F=-2.76, p=.007) and the length of nursing career (F=4.35, p=.015). Their nursing professionalism showed a positive correlation with social support (r=.45, p<.001) and a negative correlation with job stress (r=-.43, p<.001). As a result of the multiple regression analysis, factors influencing nursing professionalism of the participants were found to be job stress (β=-.28, p=.003), social support (β=.23, p=.015), and the length of nursing career (β=.19, p=.018). The explanatory power of the model was 28.0% (F=12.62, p<.001). Conclusion: The present study suggests that organized efforts are needed to alleviate job stress and to increase social support for nurses in postgraduate courses in order to ultimately improve their nursing professionalism.

The Influences of Nursing Professionalism and Emotional Intelligence on the Clinical Performance Ability in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 간호전문직관과 감성지능이 임상수행능력에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the influences of nursing professionalism and emotional intelligence on the clinical performance ability of nursing students. Methods: The subjects of this study included 234 nursing students from three universities located in two regions of South Korea. Data were collected from June 15 to 30, 2018 by using self-reported questionnaires. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression analysis using the IBM SPSS 21.0 program. Results: The factors which influenced the clinical performance ability in nursing students were self-concept of the profession(β=.28, p<.001), roles of nursing service (β=.22, p<.001), use of emotion (β=.22, p<.001), self-emotional appraisal (β=.18, p=.002), regulation of emotion (β=.16, p=.004), and grade (β=.16, p=.002) which explained 51.7% of the variance. Conclusions: These results suggest that to improve clinical performance ability in nursing students, an intervention that enhances their nursing professionalism and emotional intelligence should be considered.

Factors Influencing Nurses' Performance of Care in COVID-19 Wards (감염 전담 병동 간호사의 COVID-19 환자 간호업무수행에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing nurses' performance of care in COVID-19 wards. Methods: The participants were 132 nurses who worked in COVID-19 wards at three hospitals, and were recruited from April 1 to May 31, 2021. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 24.0 program. Results: Nursing performance was significantly and positively correlated with ethical sensitivity (r = .75, p < .001), nursing professionalism (r = .67, p < .001), and social support (r = .67, p < .001). Nursing professionalism was positively correlated with ethical sensitivity (r = .64, p < .001) and social support (r = .55, p < .001). Multiple regression analysis for nursing performance revealed that the most significant factor was ethical sensitivity (β = .47, p < .001). Ethical sensitivity, nursing professionalism, and social support explained 66.0% of total variance in nursing performance. Conclusion: Ethical sensitiviy, nursing professionalism, and social support significantly influence nurses' performace of care in COVID-19 wards. It suggests that intervention programs should be directed at improving nurses' ethical sensitivity, bolstering social support, and enhancing nursing professionalism.

Public Reporting on the Quality Ratings of Nursing Homes in the Republic of Korea

  • Background: Quality ratings could provide vital information to help people in choosing a nursing home. Purpose: This study investigated factors aligned with quality ratings of nursing homes. Methods: We employed a cross-sectional descriptive design to assess publicly available data on 1,354 nursing homes with 30 or more beds in the Republic of Korea. After excluding 289 nursing homes with no reported quality-evaluation ratings, we analyzed the 2015 data of 1,065 nursing homes. To prevent multicollinearity among independent variables, we carefully selected the final set of variables based on clinical and theoretical meaningfulness to direct nursing care. Quality, the ordinal outcome, was scored from 1 to 5 with a higher score indicating higher quality of the organization. We constructed a multivariate ordered logistic regression model. Results: Higher quality ratings of nursing homes was significantly related to the number of unoccupied beds (OR=0.99, p=.024), registered nurses (RNs) (OR=1.30, p=.003), qualified care workers (OR=1.03, p=.011), cognitive-improvement programs (OR=1.05, p=.024), and other programs for residents' activities (OR=1.09, p<.001). Conclusion: The number of RNs had the strongest influence on the publicly reported quality rating, while the rating of qualified care workers demonstrated little effect and that of nursing assistants had no effect. The number of RNs could be used as a crucial indicator for high-quality homes; more resident-engaging programs also demonstrated better quality of nursing home care.

Convergence relationships between Leisure Satisfaction, Job Stress and Nursing Performance of Nurses (간호사의 여가만족, 직무스트레스 및 간호업무성과 간의 융합관계)

  • This study aimed to identify the factors affecting the nursing performance and the convergence relationships of leisure satisfaction, job stress, and nursing performance among nurses. Participants included 150 nurses working at 2 hospitals in C city from August 3 to September 15, 2018. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA with Scheffe's test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression by SPSS 23.0 program. Nursing performance were significantly differences in age (F=4.78, p=.003), marital status (F=2.74, p=.007), length of clinical career (F=3.34, p=.012), and health condition (F=5.23, p=.002). Nursing performance was a positively correlated with leisure satisfaction (r=.32, p<.001) and a negatively correlated with job stress (r=-19, p=.020), and job stress was a negatively correlated with leisure satisfaction (r=-.32, p=.005). The factors affecting the nursing performance of clinical nurses were age (${\beta}=.20$, p=.008) and leisure satisfaction (${\beta}=.28$, p<.001), and these variables explained about 19.6% of the variance in nursing performance. In order to improve nursing performance, it is necessary to provide working environment and institutional support for increasing leisure satisfaction and reducing job stress and age-differentiated approaches.

A STUDY ON THE NURSING CARIES OF KINDERGARTEN CHILDREN IN KOREA (유치원 및 어린이집 아동의 우유병우식증에 관한 연구)

  • To investigate the prevalence and etiologic factors of nursing caries, oral examination was performed on 1,100 kindergarten children from 6 Seoul areas and 3 Hongchun areas. Parents were asked to fill out questionnaires. The following results were obtained: 1. The prevalence of nursing caries among 1,100 in the sample group(age 30-75 months) was 14.8%. 2. Fathers' education level(p<0.05), mothers' education level(p<0.01) and monthly income was higher in caries-free group children. 3. When the dietary tendencies of nursing caries group and caries-free group were compared, no significant differences in the length and method of feeding were found. However, nursing caries group showed higher frequency of bedtime nursing habit(p<0.01), daytime use of bottle as a comforter(p<0.01) and other beverage feeding in addition to milk(p<0.01). 4. When the parents' awareness of caries prevention was compared, caries-free group per formed more frequent tooth cleansing(p<0.05) and periodic dental examination(p<0.01).5. Dental caries experience of mothers was significantly lower in the caries free group(p<0.05). From the above results, it can be concluded that deleterious nursing habit had great effect on developing nursing caries and the incidence of nursing caries was lower among children with parents of higher socioeconomic status.

The Ethical Values : A Comparison of Student in Nursing and Medicine (간호학과와 의학과 학생의 윤리적 가치관 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the ethical values of senior students in nursing (N=111) and in medicine(N=82). The data were collected through self-reported questionnaires in April, 1999. Categories for classifying used in the content analysis of the responses were : (1) human life (2) patient relationship (3) task relationship and (4) co-worker relationship. The results of the study are as follows ; 1) The ethical values of students in nursing and medicine were in the direction of utilitarian in the area of human life. The ethical values of students in nursing and medicine were in the direction of a deontological position in the area of patient relationship. The mean score for students in nursing was significantly higher than for those in medicine(P<0.01) The ethical values of students in nursing and medicine was in the direction of utilitarian in the area of task relationship. The mean score for students in medicine was significantly lower than that of students in nursing(P<0.01). The ethical values of students in nursing and medicine was definitely in the direction of a deontological position in co-worker. The mean score for students in nursing was significantly higher than that of students medicine (P<0.05). 2) A positive correlation was found between the area of human life and patient relationship(P<0.05), patient and task relationship(P<0.01), and task and co-worker relationship(P<0.05) for students in nursing. On the other hand, the area of human life was positively correlated with patient, task and co-worker relationship area(P<0.05) for students in medicine. The area of patient relationship was also positively correlated with co -worker relationship for the students in medicine(P<0.01). 3) The ethical values of students in nursing were related to demographic characteristics ; degree of participation in religion(P<0.01)and degree of recognition of an ethical codes(P<0.05), on the other hand, the ethical values of students in medicine showed no significant differences according to demogrephic variables.
