Purpose: The purpose of the study was to shorten the KPCS-1 (Korean Patient Classification System-1) for predicting nursing care need level and to explore whether the patients can be clustered by their acuity and dependency. Methods: The participants were inpatients in two surgical wards and two internal medicine wards at a teritory hospital during 14 days investigations. The KPCS-1 was evaluated once a day for all inpatients and 2,082 cases of data from a total of 411 patients were analyzed. Results: The items were reducted from 50 items to 26 items by partial least squares analysis and expert review. Through factor analysis, it was confirmed that hygiene, diet, elimination, and exercise were categorized as dependence factors. Patients were clustered with low acuity/low dependency (average score: 7.68±2.81/1.05±1.33), high acuity/low dependency (average score: 17.20±4.15/1.94±2.40), medium acuity/high dependency (average score: 13.56±5.30/9.66±2.64) through cluster analysis. The total score of the three groups for their nursing care needs was 8.73±3.36, 19.14±5.74, and 23.24±6.31 in order, and the results showed a statistically significant difference (F=1712.12, p<.001). Conclusion: The shortening of the KPCS-1 and the new criteria for categorizing patients according to acuity and dependence will increase clinical utility and be useful for manpower assignment criteria in detail.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine nurses' turnover experiences and to provide basic information for developing turnover intervention program for effective human resources management. Methods: This study is an inductive, descriptive phenomenological research that uses profound interviews and observations. The subjects of the study were nurses retired from a hospital. Results: The themes were classified into the three theme clusters. The first theme was about 'deepening inside wound' which was described as experiencing stresses due to introversion, feeling a heavy burden about responsibilities as experienced nurses, feeling guilty about limits of performance and hurt about reproaches by seniors and having conflicts with physicians. The second theme cluster focused on 'powerlessness as time goes', which was stated as having difficulty in adaptation to the new rotated wards, feeling tired and having no spare time and difficulty in night duty, experiencing stagnation and powerlessness and feeling disappointed about inadequate rewards. The third was about 'can't find the exit' which were expressed with wanting to change the speciality because of concerns about future, having affection to motherhood, feeling conflict over the nursing profession itself, concentrating on the matter of turnover and facing related personal situations, and regretting turnover. Conclusion & Suggestions: Considering all these experiences, field managers in nursing should build up a support system that helps nurses overcome risks related to decision-making about turnover. In addition, nurse managers need to develop a human resources development program in which competent nurses are continuously won over through education and counseling.

Purpose: This study was designed to identify creation of intellectual capital and factors influencing the creation of intellectual capital in hospital organizations. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used, with a convenience sample of 300 nurses from three general hospitals in Gwangju and South Cholla province. The tools used for this study were scales measuring creation of intellectual capital (8 items), social capital (20 items), knowledge management (8 items). Data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient and regression using the SPSS WIN 18.0 program. Results: There were significantly positive relationships between social capital and knowledge management with creation of intellectual capital. The mean score for creation of intellectual capital in hospital organizations was 4.59 points. Factors influencing creation of intellectual capital in hospital organization were identified as knowledge management (${\beta}$=.625), shared values & action (${\beta}$=.166), and participation in civic activities (${\beta}$=.118). These factors explained 59.3% of the variance in creation of intellectual capital in hospital organizations. Conclusion: The results indicate which factors are major factors influencing creation of intellectual capital and therefore, serve as predictors of creation of intellectual capital in hospital organizations.
Purpose: This study has been carried out in order to develop and verify the effects of self-leadership reinforcement program for hospital nurses. Methods: The research design was a non-equivalent control group pre-posttest design. Participants were 64 individuals (32 in each group), all of whom were nurses working at a university hospital, with less than five years of job experience. Experimental group was provided with two hours of self-leadership reinforcement program, once per week, for four weeks. The questionnaire for pre and post test included general characteristics, transfer motivation for learning, self-leadership, communication ability, clinical nursing competency, organizational commitment, and turnover intentions. Results: There was a significant difference in self-leadership scores between experimental group and control group (F= 15.10, p<.001). There was also a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in terms of transfer motivation for learning (t = -5.44 p<.001), communication ability (F = 15.29, p<.001), clinical nursing competency (F = 15.23, p<.001), and organizational commitment scores (F = 7.21, p=.009). Conclusion: The self-leadership reinforcement program developed in this study was effective in improving self-leadership, communication ability, clinical nursing competency, and organizational commitment. Thus, by implementing the program at clinical levels, it will be a basis for nursing personnel resource administration.

Purpose: This study is a descriptive research to analyze prognostic factors of barbiturate coma therapy (BCT) for severe brain damage patients, to develop a critical pathway (CP) based on the results of analysis and to examine the effect of its clinical application. Method: We analyzed medical records of 76 patients who received BCT for more than three days between January 1999 to July 2005. Based on the results of the analysis, we developed a CP and applied it to 12 people during August-December of 2005. Result: By application of BCT CP, the mortality rate decreased from 31.6% to 16.7%. It was found that the period of staying at ICU and total period of hospitalization were shortened by 2.78 (13.9%) days and 16.43 (29.4%) days, respectively. The Glasgow coma scale of the recovery group by CP application was 9.03 (4.64) at 72 hours post of BCT and 14.28 (1.82) at discharge from hospital, and DRS was 6.62 (6.38) points. Conclusion: By verifying clinical validity of the suggested CP, we believe that we have obtained visible effects standardizing the treatment pathway of BCT for brain damage patients.
