This study identified the actual conditions for safe anticancer drug management among nurses and the relationship between level of awareness and performance of anticancer drug safety regulations in terms of preparation, administration, and disposal. The respondents were 236 nurses working with chemotherapy in wards and outpatient clinics in five hospitals in and near Seoul. Safety regulations provided for the anticancer drug the Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA, 1999), as modified for an earlier study, were used. The results showed that the level of awareness and performance on the anticancer drug safety regulations indicate their preparation ($3.38{\pm}0.55$, $2.38{\pm}0.98$), administration ($3.52{\pm}0.46$, $3.17{\pm}0.70$), general handling and disposal ($3.33{\pm}0.54$, $2.42{\pm}0.90$) on a scale 0 to 5. Also, there were significant differences in job positions, work experience, type of preparation, and continuing education and a positive relationship between the level of awareness and nursing performance. Thus, nurses should receive continuing education on the handling of anticancer drugs to improve the level of performance following safety regulations.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to identify the effect of video programs of cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation (CPCR) education of cardiopulmonary cerebral resuscitation of nurses. Methods: The subjects of the study were 64 nurses working in a university hospital. Nurse's CPCR performance have been measured four times (pre-test, post-test at immediately, 3 months and 6 months after intervention). Data were collected from February to August 2013. Results: There were significant differences in knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy, and performance between groups by measure time. And there were significant interactions in knowledge, self-efficacy, and performance between groups, within groups, except for the attitude. Purpose: This study aimed to identify the perceptions, importance, and performance of midwives' roles among midwives and nurses in Korea. Methods: A descriptive correlational design was employed. Data were collected from 164 nurses and 79 midwives from April 1 to June 25, 2021. Midwives enrolled in the Korean Midwifery Association and nurses and midwives from two hospitals each Daegu and Gyeonggi Province in Korea were invited to participate. The independent t-test, chi-square test, the Welch-Aspin test, and Pearson correlation coefficient were used for analysis. Results: The midwives' role perception score (3.47±1.46) was lower than that of nurses (3.95±0.85), and the midwives' role performance score (2.98±0.83) was also lower than that of nurses (3.34±0.89). Significant differences were observed between midwives and nurses in their perception and performance of roles related to prenatal management, childbirth management, management of psychological changes, postpartum management, and newborn care. Higher role perception and performance among midwives were linked to the management of psychological changes and women's health, indicating potential areas for future development. Conclusion: The study results suggest directions for developing new roles for midwives. It is necessary to find a way to expand the field of midwives in public health by benchmarking the roles of midwives in various countries.
Purpose : Using qualitative research and a phenomenological approach, the present study aimed to explore men's experiences of becoming a nurse. We posed the question "What has been your experience of becoming a nurse?" Methods : Eleven male nurses from three regions in Korea were selected through convenience sampling. The protocol suggested by Colaizzi was used for data analysis. Results : The principal themes were "Challenging to the stochastic stereotype of gender mechanics," "Floating outside the enclosure of multiple groups," "The male nurse's conceptualization of nursing organizations," "To stand with self-doubt, thinking of it as a stopover," and "Situations encountered by a male nurse." Conclusion : Men experience gender discrimination based on the social roles that are imposed on males and females both at school and in the workplace. They prefer to work where they have more diverse tasks that require quick responses. However, most male nurses adapt to this work by outlasting the difficulties. These nurses become accustomed to their tasks, and satisfied with their mature work performance. They often feel they are not adequately compensated for their work. They may judge the future as uncertain, and have lingering doubts about maintaining their positions, ultimately gravitating toward specialized fields that promise a brighter future and are more consistent with traditional gender expectations.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of clinical nurses' communication competency and emotional intelligence on organizational performance. Methods: Two hundred and fifty nurses who currently work at two superior general hospitals in Seoul, Korea, participated in the study. Data were collected between March and April, 2015. Global Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale (GICC-15) developed by Hur (2003) was used to measure communication competency. Wong & Law's emotional intelligence scale (WLEIS) developed by Wong & Law (2002) was used to measure emotional intelligence. Organizational performance scale developed by Brewer & Selden (2000) was used to measure organizational performance. Results: The results were summarized as follows: 1) The means of communication competency, emotional intelligence and organizational performance were 3.61, 4.84, and 3.59 respectively. 2) There were positive correlations between communication competency, emotional intelligence and organizational performance. 3) The variance of organizational performance accounted for was 26.0% (adj $R^2=.26$). Conclusion: These findings suggest that developing human resources in nursing is important for better organizational performance.
Purpose: This study aimed to develop an emotive role-play program for nursing students focusing on high-risk pregnancy and analyze its effects on communication skills, clinical performance, and emotional intelligence. Methods: A quasi-experimental nonequivalent comparison group design was adopted with 83 nursing students (experimental group, 45; comparison group, 38) who participated voluntarily in an extracurricular program. The preliminary survey was conducted on November 3 and November 4, 2020, and the follow-up survey was conducted on November 12, 2020, for the comparison group and on November 27, 2020, for the experimental group. A program that included five role-play scenarios related to induced labor, preeclampsia, premature rupture of membranes, preterm labor, and infertility was developed by a group of experts and presented to the experimental group over 11 total hours across 3 days. Each student participated in a role-play scenario as a patient, family member, or nurse and observed three other scenarios. The comparison group received a workbook after the follow-up evaluation. The independent t-test was performed to analyze changes in communication skills, clinical performance, and emotional intelligence. Results: Communication skills (t=1.84, p=.035) and clinical performance (t=2.75, p=.004) significantly increased in the experimental group compared to the comparison group. A significant difference was not observed between the experimental and comparison groups for emotional intelligence (t=1.36, p=.088). Conclusion: The emotive role-play program concerning high-risk pregnancy was effective in improving nursing students' communication skills and clinical performance and can be used in nursing education related to high-risk pregnancy and childbirth.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate nurses readiness to self-directed learning and its correlations with nursing practice competence in a tertiary hospital in Seoul, Korea. Methods: A cross sectional survey design was utilized to assess nurses readiness to self-directed learning and job performance. The data used in this study were obtained from 286 nurses who have been working on general ward for over 1 year. Data were analyzed by ANOVA, t-test, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression using SAS 9.1 program. Results: The mean score of the readiness to self-directed learning is 3.56 and that of nursing practice competence is 2.71. The readiness to self-directed learning was statistically different according to level of education, and clinical work experience. Nursing practice competence was also significantly different according to level of education, clinical work experience, marital status, age, and working division. The readiness to self-directed learning and nursing practice competence seem to have significant positive correlation to each other (r=.555, p<.001). The readiness to self-directed learning explains 32.0% of nursing practice competence (F=20.20, p<.001). Conclusion: These findings indicate that program development for enhancing the readiness to self-directed learning is needed to improve nursing practice competence. We also need continuous efforts to improve nurses initiatives and creativity.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate an e-Learning Program designed to enhance novice nurses's performance ability Method: The e-Learning program was designed for novice nurses before beginning to work in a hospital using a KMS(Knowledge Management System). This study was carried out from February 2006 to April 2007. The program had progressive steps including design, pilot test & modification, contents development, program application and evaluation. After the program design and pilot testing, the learner's satisfaction was analyzed. Result: The program site is http://kms.emc.ac.kr titled, 'Cyber Education Center'. The sixteen part course has been developed as follows: blood sugar test, skin test, insulin test 1, insulin test 2, blood culture, blood sampling, heat therapy, cold therapy, glycerin enema, preparation of operation, oxygen therapy, suction technique, transfusion, foley catheterization and aseptic technique. The overall learner's satisfaction score was 4.08 out of 5 points. Conclusion: E-Learning could be useful for education and nursing work. This method may be effective for clinical nurses.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the educational needs of virtual reality simulations that can be applied to novice nurses during the waiting period before starting work in a hospital. Methods: A convergent mixed methods was used. The survey data were collected from 230 novice nurses, and a focus group interview was conducted with 6 new nurses. The data were collected from November 2022 to January 2023. Descriptive statistics, a frequency analysis, independent t-test, and an Importance-Performance Analysis were performed using SPSS 24.0. Results: Appropriate topics for virtual reality simulation education were indicated to be medications and intravenous injections, which are high priority topics in quantitative and qualitative research. The novice nurses wanted group activity training three to four times a week for two weeks before beginning work in a hospital. They also wanted an immersive virtual reality system based on a real hospital environment. Conclusion: Based on the above results, this study provides basic data for the development of a virtual reality simulation education that can improve the adaptation of novice nurses to clinical practice. A strategy was suggested to utilize the waiting time before beginning work in a hospital as educational time.
Purpose: This study was done to identify the causes of turnover in nursing staff in small and medium‐size hospitals and prepare measures to decrease turnover. Nurses in these hospitals were surveyed focusing on their nursing activities, reasons for turnover, and content of their work. Method: A mail survey of hospitals with 300 beds or less was conducted using a questionnaire including items on the current state of nursing, performance of nursing tasks, turnover of nurses, working conditions, and supports and policies related to insufficient number of nurses. Results: The average number of nurses per 100 beds was 37.5, 3.3 less than the prescribed level of 40.8. The turnover rate was higher when the level of remuneration for nursing care was low, and the most frequent reason for nurses leaving was 'move to another hospital', showing that there is a continuous chain of moves for nurses. Other frequent reasons were situations related to working conditions such as childbirth, child care, irregular working hours, night work, and low wages. Conclusion: To guarantee adequate nursing coverage in these hospitals, working conditions for nurses should be improved, including higher wages, a more flexible work system, and installation and operation of 24-hour child care facilities.
