Purpose: This study was done to identify predictors of the fighting spirit or helplessness/hopelessness in the patients' mental adjustment to cancer. Cancer patients' characteristics like performance status, metastasis and duration of diagnosis with demographic factors, spiritual support and social support were used as predictors of a fighting spirit or helplessness/hopelessness. Methods: A total of 124 ambulatory cancer patients completed the Mental Adjustment to Cancer (MAC) scale and responded in a structured instrument about their characteristics, spiritual and social support. Results: The results of multiple regression analysis revealed that confidence in the supporter ($R^2=.114$, p=.000), duration of cancer diagnosis ($R^2=.041$, p=.000) and faith ($R^2=.030$, p=.000) were predictive of a fighting spirit ($R^2=.185$, p=.000); whereas, education ($R^2= .074$, p=.001), performance status ($R^2=.055$, p=.000), satisfaction with social support ($R^2=.046$, p=.000), and metastasis ($R^2=.037$, p=.000) were predictive of helplessness/hopelessness ($R^2=.202$, p=.000). Conclusion: Social support, spiritual support and disease related factors like metastasis, performance status, and duration of cancer diagnosis need to be considered in a psychosocial nursing intervention for a fighting spirit or helplessness/hopelessness.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of educational programs on the needs and satisfaction level of nursing activities related with patients receiving anti-cancer chemotherapy. The subjects, 85 cancer patients who were admitted at St. Mary's hospital, who had taken chemotherapy between January and March, 2001 were selected for the study. Of the subjects educational program was applied to 43 patients and the other 42 patients remained and the control group. Educational booklets developed by investigators were validated by a group of judges consisted of nursing professors, physicians and head nurses. Cronbach's $\alpha$ for measurement tools used in this study were 0.96 - 0.98. The results of the study were as follows: 1. Satisfaction scores for received nursing activities m the experiment group were higher than that in the control group. 2. Needs scores for nursing in the experimental group showed no significant differences compared to the control group. The two groups showed different satisfaction levels in different categories of nursing: physical. educational. therapeutic and socio-psychological, in which the therapeutic category scored the highest. 3. Due to the general characteristics. there were no variables to affect the degree of nursing need regarding the two groups. However, in satisfaction level of nursing services, there was a contrary phenomenon between the two group relating to education level (p=0.03). Patients with higher educational levels tend to be more satisfactory. The results strongly indicated that educational program is effective in increasing the satisfaction of patients receiving anti-cancer chemotherapy.
Purpose: This study is to determine knowledge about early detection and risk perception of cancer according to taking cancer screening tests in the general population. Methods: The participants were 151 people aged 40 years or older. A questionnaire consisted of knowledge about early detection (warning signs, cancer screening methods, general knowledge for early detection), cancer risk perception and history of cancer screening during past 2 years. Results: The percentages of correct answers were 64.7% in knowledge about warning signs, 73.7% in knowledge of cancer screening tests and 80.1% in general knowledge for early detection. Participants had the highest knowledge about screening methods for stomach cancer and the lowest for liver and colon cancer. The level of risk perception was medium. The participants who participated in cancer screening showed lower risk perception than those who did not. There was no significant relationship between knowledge and performance of cancer screening. The primary reason for not participating in cancer screening was patient's perception of their own health. Conclusion: These results suggest that cancer risk perception can affect the performance of cancer screening and we need to study how to handle this problem. Additionally screening programs should focus on liver cancer and colon cancer.
Purpose: This study aimed to identify the relationships among bowel function, health locus of control, anxiety, and depression in patient with rectal cancer. Methods: This study utilized a descriptive correlational design. Subjects were 200 rectal cancer patients who attended out-patient clinic in a colorectal cancer center. The study instruments included the scales for bowel function, health locus of control, anxiety, and depression. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: The mean score of bowel function was $34.44{\pm}5.73$. The mean scores of internal HLOC, chance HLOC, doctor HLOC, and powerful others HLOC were $29.06{\pm}6.81$, $22.41{\pm}6.96$, $15.88{\pm}2.85$, and $10.72{\pm}4.68$ respectively. The mean scores of anxiety and depression were $4.49{\pm}3.95$ and $6.25{\pm}3.98$, respectively. There were significant negative correlations between bowel function and anxiety (r=-.180, p=.011); between bowel function and depression (r=-.267, p<.001); and between internal health locus of control and depression (r=-.149, p=.035). There were significant positive correlations between chance health locus of control and depression (r=.146, p=.039), and between anxiety and depression (r=.651, p<.001). Conclusion: It is suggested that anxiety and depression for the patients with low bowel function after colorectal cancer surgery should be evaluated and nursing interventions to enhance internal health locus of control need to be developed.
The Cancer Patients are rapidly growing and it became one of the main cause of death. Lately with the effect of Chemotherapy, drastically improved patients quality of life and also Prolonged Life of Cancer Patients. But the Chemotherapy not only Kill the Cancer cells but also harm to normal cells witch Cancer lots of side effect. This study was designed to identify the effectiveness of patient education to reduce side effect and help promote self care. The date was collected from October, 2001 to February, 2002 by questionary Survey Method. The subjects were 24 patients Who were and Anti Chemotherapy C University Hospital. Educated booklet contained what is Chemotherapy, what are the side effects, and to promote Self care, Pre test was given after 3-4 weeks re admission period. Analysis data was done by SPSS Program Paired t-test was used to differentiate Knowledge and difference of performing self care. Relationship in between Knowledge and promoting Self care was used Pearson Correlation. As the result of education, knowledge of self care and performance was drastically increased but the relationship in between knowledge of self care performed was not significant. Therefore it is proposed as follows: 1) Further research with experienced subjects to differentiate experience group and control group. 2) Education program need to be develop and standardize for anti cancer Chemotherapy patient. 3) During 6 cycle of Chemotherapy what is ideal number of in order to get the best result.
Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between stress and quality of life of family caregivers of patients with lung cancer. Methods: From April 18 to May 4, 2009, data were collected using self-report questionnaires with 95 family caregivers of lung cancer patients in G cancer center. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and pearson's correlation coefficient with SPSS 14.0. Results: The mean score of the stress level was 27.5 (SD=14.77). The mean score of the QOL was 73.0 (SD=17.86). The stress level of family caregiver showed significant difference according to gender (psychological stress p=.011, total level of stress p=.042) and availableness of second caregiver (physical stress p=.023, psychological stress p=.035, total level of stress p=.001). The QOL of family caregivers showed significant difference according to daily caring (positive adaptation p=.045) and financial burden on treatment expense (positive adaptation p=.004, total quality of life p=.043). The negative correlation was found between stress and QOL of family caregivers (r=-.67, p=.032). Conclusion: These results indicate a need to develop nursing intervention programs for family caregivers to reduce stress and improve QOL.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence and self care practice for nausea/vomiting in patients with cancer during chemotherapy. Method: The participants were 100 patients with cancer over 20 years of age who visited the outpatient department or were hospitalized for chemotherapy Self care in the case of nausea and vomiting was measured by the Dodd's scale. Data were analyzed using the SAS program and the following statistics were used frequency, percentage, unpaired t test, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: The ratio of the occurrence of nausea/ vomiting in the participants was 70.0%. The incidence of nausea/ vomiting was significantly higher for women than for men. The incidence of nausea/ vomiting was also higher for patients with cancer not in the gastro-intestinal system (GIS) compared to that for patients with GIS cancer. The incidence of nausea/ vomiting positively correlated with anorexia, skin injury, and fatigue. Conclusion: The ratio of occurrence of nausea/ vomiting for the participants was 70.0%. The incidence of nausea/ vomiting was higher fur women and patients with cancer not in the GIS. The incidence of nausea/ vomiting positively correlated with anorexia, skin injury, and fatigue. The results indicate that nausea/vomiting is a frequent symptom, particularly in women and there is a need to provide interventions to decrease the effects of this symptom.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of an individualized educational program by multidisciplinary staffs on the need for caring among patients with radiotherapy. Methods: A quasi experimental study with one group was designed to examine the effect. A total of 48 adult patients were recruited from a university hospital in G-city, Korea from July, 2006 to June, 2007. The level of patients' need for caring during radiotherapy was assessed at the pre- and post-education by a trained research assistant. The level of patients' need for caring on radiotherapy was measured with a 20-item questionnaire. Results: Paired t-test showed that the level of patients' need was reduced at the post-test compared to pre-test (t=3.40, p=0.002). The level of need was higher among the older than 65 yr (F=4.82, p=0.034), and patients who had education years less than 10 yr (F=4.40, p=0.042) and not a spouse (F=5.97, p=0.019) at the pre-test, while there were no difference according to participants' characteristics at the post-test. Conclusions: This multidisciplinary and individualized education program was effective on reducing the level of need for caring during radiotherapy. Therefore, for long-term self-management, further educational strategies based on patients' needs through multidisciplinary teamwork need to be developed and applied.
Purpose: This study was to investigate the knowledge and learning needs of chemotherapy in gynecological cancer patients. Method: The subjects consisted of 103 gynecological cancer patients receiving chemotherapy from April 2005 to August 2005. Data was collected using a questionnaire about knowledge and learning needs of chemotherapy. The data was analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient using SAS. Result: Average scores of knowledge and learning needs of general treatment and care were 2.74, and 3.30 respectively. Average score of knowledge and learning needs of chemotherapy were 2.54 and 3.23 respectively. Learning needs of general treatment and care and of chemotherapy were significantly different in relation to marital status, educational level, family support, the operation, and the amount of chemotherapy received. Items with the highest level of learning needs were the symptoms of recurring illness of general treatment, and minimizing side effects of chemotherapy. There were a negative correlation between knowledge and learning needs on general treatment and a positive correlation between knowledge and learning needs on chemothearpy but there were not significant statistically. Conclusion: The level of learning needs related to cancer treatment was high, whereas, that of knowledge was low. Therefore, when designing an educational program for gynecological cancer patients, understanding of learning needs is necessary. Also, consideration of a patient's characteristics, and a systematic and detailed educational program should be provided.
Purpose: This study was aimed to identify the influencing factors on the quality of life among breast cancer survivors. Methods: The subjects were 159 female patients who visited out-patient department (OPD) after the mass removal surgery for breast cancer and had completed adjuvant treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy at a university hospital and a general hospital. Data collection was conducted using the Ferrell QOL scale, the Mishel uncertainty scale, the Fitts & Osgoods body image scale revised by Jeon & Kim. the Rosenberg self-esteem scale, and the Kang family support scale. Results: The level of QOL in the participants was in the middle. There were a significant correlation between QOL, uncertainty, self-esteem, and family support. There were significant differences in QOL with the perceived health condition and the best support person. In a regression analysis, the most powerful predictor of QOL was body image (21.7%). Altogether uncertainty and perceived health condition explained 28.6% of the variance of QOL of the participants. Conclusion: Body image, uncertainty, and perceived health condition were important predictors of QOL. These results demonstrated the need for developing interventions to improve QOL of breast cancer survivors.
