Purpose. The purpose of this review is to explore cultural influences on the experiences of Korean, Korean American, and Caucasian American family caregivers caring for frail older adults in terms of the selection of a primary caregiver, caregiving motivation, support/help-seeking, and negative emotional responses (depression and burden). Methods. Seven electronic databases were searched to retrieve studies from 1966 to 2005. Thirty-two studies were identified. Results. This review supported cultural influences on the selection of primary caregiver, caregiving motivation, and support/help-seeking among the three caregiver groups. In Korean caregivers, the major primary caregivers were daughters-in-law while among Korean American and Caucasian American caregivers, the major primary caregivers were daughters or spouses. As a major caregiving motivation, Caucasian American care¬givers reported filial affection while Korean caregivers and Korean American caregivers reported filial obligation. Korean caregivers reported higher extended family support, while Caucasian American caregivers reported higher utilization of formal support. Korean caregivers showed the highest levels of depression followed by Korean American caregivers and Caucasian American caregivers. Conclusion. In order to develop culturally appropriate interventions and policies, more research is needed to further explain these differences among the three groups, especially regarding support/help-seeking and negative emotional responses.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptions and attitudes of nurses toward euthanasia. Method: In this descriptive study, data were collected from 485 nurses using a self-report questionnaire. The attitudes toward euthanasia scales were composed of four sub dimensions; quality of life, client's right, respect for life and medical ethics. The data were analyzed with descriptive and parametric statistics using SPSS WIN program. Results: Of the nurses, 84.7% were in agreement with constituting a law for euthanasia and 57.6% accepted passive euthanasia. Further, 80.1% would accept euthanasia for their own end-of-life situation. The most frequent reason for pro euthanasia was pain relief, and for con, respect for lift. The mean attitude score was 54.64 and that of sub dimensions, were 2.81 for quality of life, 3.21 for client's right, 2.87 for respect for life, and 2.84 for medical ethics. The nurses who were positive in their thinking about euthanasia had higher attitude scores. Among general characteristics of the nurses, attitudes scores were significantly different according to religion. Conclusion: Although many nurses had a positive concept of euthanasia, they still have ethical dilemmas in lift-sustaining care. Therefore training programs on moral rights are necessary to provide guidelines for end-of-life care.

This study examines the factors that are associated with the choice of the Sanhujoriwon utilization among the Korean postpartal women. Data were collected from 140 postpartal women in 9 hospitals around Seoul. Data were analyzed based on descriptive statistics and chi-square test. The results were as follows: 1. Forty percent of the respondents chose to go to a Sanhujoriwon while they were in a hospital after having given birth to a child. 2. The number of persons who could help a respondent beside her husband showed a statistically significant association with the choice of the Sanhujoriwon utilization. In addition, burden from multiple roles expected after the birth was positively associated with the choice of the Sanhujoriwon utilization. Recommendations by husbands or friends to use the Sanhujoriwon also increased the proportion of the choice of the Sanhujoriwon utilization. 3. Knowledge about the Sanhujoriwon appeared to be an important factor. Having heard about the Sanhujoriwon, an appropriateness of the price, and a positive image of the Sanhujoriwon were positively associated with the choice of the Sanhujoriwon utilization. It was expected that the degree of depressive symptoms and confidence of raising a newborn baby would affect the Sanhujoriwon utilization. This was not the case in this study. Intimacy developed between the postpartal women, their husbands and their relatives as well as parents in-law did not show a statistically significant relationship to the choice of the utilization. Implication of these findings and major findings of this study were discussed.
This study presents results of surveys conducted Seoul area using structured questionnaire developed by researchers to determine the degree of recognition and practice of breast-feeding. The subjects were mothers of 255 childs 1-36 months of age who have experienced breast feeding over one month. Recognition of breastfeeding was significantly associated with "baby's health", "emotional relationship between mother and infant", "mother's health", "for economic reasons". The majority of mothers got information of breastfeeding through booklets(64.7%), from her mothers(44.7%), through T.V or Radio (45.5%), School education(41.6%) from mother in law(36.5%), and did not perceive professional advice from nurses or doctors as important. "Lack of milk" was the predominant reason for for terminating breastfeeding. Efforts for practice of breastfeeding was comparatively high because of experienced mothers of breastfeeding. Some of them were "frying to take liguid diet and nurtitional food for increasing secretion of milk", "fed on by infant-demanded schedule". Duration of breastfeeding was under on month (31.0%), 1-3 months(25.5%), 3-6 months(19.6%), 6-9 months (11.0%). Degree of recognition and practice of breastfeeding was significantly correlated with mother's educational background, location of delivary(big hopital), Rooming in, over 5 months of breastfeeding. Based on the results of this study, we suggest that effective and supportive breastfeeding program developed by nurses have to provide to mothers of infants to take an important role in breastfeeding.

The aim of this study was to determine the mediating effects in the relationships among nursing organizational culture, workplace bullying, and job stress of nurses. For the descriptive correlational study design, data were collected using a structured questionnaire from nurses at university hospitals (N=130). Statistical analysis was performed on the collected data using SPSS 22.0 statistics program. The mean scores of nurses for nursing organizational culture, workplace bullying, and job stress were 2.99±0.74, 1.85±0.65, and 2.50±0.35, respectively. Nursing organizational culture of nurses had a negative correlation with both workplace bullying (r=-0.45, p=0.001) and job stress (r=-0.61, p=0.001), whereas workplace bullying showed a positive correlation with job stress (r=0.42, p=0.001). Sobel test was conducted to verify the mediating effects, and nursing organizational culture was statistically significant as a partial mediating effect of 0.13 (sobel'z=-2.287, p<0.05) on the effect of workplace bullying of nurses on job stress. These results indicate that nursing organizational cultures need to be established to reduce workplace bullying. It is important to create a nursing work environment that can reduce job stress, a better understanding of the nursing organization cultures related to nursing tasks is crucial, and it is necessary to develop an institutional education strategy for prevention education in hospital organizations.

This study was done to suggest modification in the present hospital policy for Labour and Delivery which separates women in labour from their families. The design for study was a descriptive study. The number of subjects consisted of 82 postpartum women who had delivered within 12 hours and for whom there were no complications either for the mothers or for the newborns. Data collection was done with a structured questionnaire which was analyzed using frequencies and percentiles. The results of this study are as follows : 1. Most of subjects (90.2%) wanted their family to participate in the labour process. Husband were chosen as the primary participant(79.3%). The number of subjects who wanted their family to support them through the whole labour process (35.4%) was the highest, followed by, during labour(32.9%), as contrasted to, during delivery (1.2%). 2. Support from husband during pregnancy ranged from 55.6%-87.6% for all items. Primary support was from husband during the pregnancy. 3. The subjects wanted support from their families in labour by way of encouraging(84.1%), consolidating(81.7%), changing position(43.9%), maintaining relaxation(35.4%) and helping with respiration control (29.3%). The results showed higher support on the emotional level than the physical and informational level (26.8%). 4. The subjects answered that they expected that participation by their family during the labour process would have the effect of increasing security for the women in labour(79.3%), providing a better relationship between the family and the women in labour (57.3%) and the newborns(34.1%), and making for an easier labour courses (23.2%). 5. The priority of family members that the subjects wanted support from was, the husband, mother and mother-in-law in that order. It can be concluded that nurses help to maintain a management policy in the maternity setting which ignores the needs of the women in labour. If consideration is to be given to these subjects, future programs should include participation by the family in the labour process.
