Quantitative methodology has been the predominent methodology utilized in research in nursing. However since the 1970s qualitative methodology has also emerged as a useful methodology and has been utilized by many researchers. But in the use of this methodology, the philosophical, epistemelogical, and theoretical backgrounds have been neglected by many researchers. This paper reports a review of the literature on methodologies, quanitative and qualitative, used in nursing, and makes suggestions for future research directions. It explains why qualitative methodology has emerged as as effective methodology in nursing and discusses how the qualitative methodology differs from the quanitative one. A comparison of the two is made based on perspectives of humane being and human behavior as well as the development of nursing science. This paper also presents several views on change in nursing science, since viewpoint not only influences the determination of the current stage of nursing science but also the shaping of the future directions of nursing science and research. Scientific revolution by Kuhn, the evolutionary perspective by Toulmin, the transition of research tradition by Laudan. and convolutionary processes are presented. However, this paper indicates that it is too early to adopt these points of view, because the history of nursing science is too short. It suggests that nursing needs pluralism in philosophy, paradigms and theory, as well as in methodology. Although we experience paradoxes in adopting different perspectives in nursing, it is wise for us to continue to include a variety of viewpoints including those to which we are not accustomed, such as qualitative methodology, since we are not yet able to decide what is best for the development of nursing science.
Purpose: This study is descriptive survey research on the analysis of nurses' perception of the 4th industrial revolution and the importance and performance of future core nursing competencies in a tertiary hospital located in Seoul. Methods: Data were collected from 149 nurses with more than a year of work experience and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Importance Performance Analysis(IPA) with the IBM SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. Results: The nurses' perception of the 4th industrial revolution was 3.23±0.71 out of 5 points. The importance of future core nursing competencies was 4.31±0.48, and the performance of it was 3.47±0.54. The analysis results of IPA showed that A (area of continuous maintenance) included critical thinking, problem-solving skills, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, communication, quality improvement and safety, professionalism, self-regulation and self-management, and personal literacy. The specific competencies were not included in B (area of priority improvement). Creativity, informatics, healthcare policy, leadership, research ability, and continuing education were included in C (area of progressive improvement). Knowledge and patient-centered care, ability to manage resources as well as professional, legal, and ethical responsibility were included in D (area of overinvestment). Conclusion: The nurses seemed not to be fully prepared for the 4th industrial revolution. However, they were well aware of the importance of the future core nursing competencies. Therefore, if nurses increase the performance of core competencies in order of priority according to the IPA results, they will be able to independently lead the changing nursing field.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the contents and trend of smoking and smoking cessation related nursing research in Korea and to suggest the directions for future research. Method: Eight nursing professional Journals published by the Korean Academic Nursing Society and by 7 - adult, community, psychiatric, fundamental, obstetrics, pediatrics, administrative- nursing societies from beginning edition to October 2005 were selected. They were examined for the proportion of published research, participants, research designs, key words, measurement tools, and the intervention outcomes in the case of the experimental research. Result: Of the research analyzed, 87 studies were smoking and smoking cessation related research. The Journals, which had published the most number of smoking and smoking cessation research were J of Korean Academic Society, J of Korean Adult Nursing Society, J of Korean Community Nursing Society. The most popular research design was an descriptive design. The major concepts studied were related psychosocial variables. Among 87 studies, only 11 were experimental research. Conclusion: Research on smoking and smoking cessation in the nursing discipline are increasing. However more research to test the effectiveness of nursing intervention programs are needed.

Purpose: The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses [QSEN] initiative group has identified six competencies (patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics) for pre-licensure nursing education along with related knowledge, skills, and attitudes for each competency. The purpose of this article is to illustrate a teaching strategy that uses films to demonstrate the QSEN competencies in undergraduate nursing students. Method: A literature review was conducted to define QSEN competencies, and six feature-length commercial movies were selected through a systematic process. We provided film titles and their synopses that can be useful in teaching the QSEN six competencies to undergraduate nursing students. Results: Patch Adams for patient-centered care, Wit for teamwork and collaboration, Lorenzo's Oil for evidence-based practice, Am$\acute{e}$lie for quality improvement, Blindness and The Island for informatics can be applied in nursing classroom practices. Conclusion: Establishing the connection between QSEN competencies and cinenurducation is novel, yet it would provide a unique opportunity for nurse educators seeking to overcome the challenge of better preparing future nurses. In future studies, additional films should be considered to enhance nursing educational strategies.
This thesis explores the actual circumstances of Korean nursing by investigating its present situations. Ultimately, the intent of this study aims to establish a future direction of Korean Nursing. As such, the current conditions of Korean nursing is analyzed in the following categories: education, practice, research, nursing policy, expansion of nursing field, and entrepreneurship. In the final conclusion, an appropriate orientation of the future of Korean nursing is discussed. There are two primary Nursing programs, a three-year(63) and a four-year(53), in Korean Nursing education. Master's programs are available at 32 nursing schools or 32 professional graduate schools. A total of 15 nursing schools have a doctoral program in Korea. The ratio of graduates between the three-year and four year programs is 76:24. Hence, it is highly encouraged to expand four-year nursing programs, because it will help raise the social status of nursing professionals as well as the quality of nursing. In the clinical nursing field, independency and self regulation are critical. As such, organizational change, implementation of a standardized nursing m information system, appropriate workforce, and improvement of the reimbursement system in nursing is recommended. In community nursing, the following should be resolved to provide better nursing services: improvement of working condition and benefits, establishment of a law enforcing the hiring of nurses, and providing continuing education. The number of nursing research has increased and nursing studies are in great quantity. However, research in practices and theories are more in demanded. Hence, research that integrates theories and practices are very significant. Ultimately, it is critical to support nursing studies that will influence nursing policy. The Korean Nurses Association(KNA) is an organization that supervises the nation's nursing policy. The primary focus of KNA is to combine the three and four year undergraduate education systems into 4 years and to establish the Nursing Practice Act. The Ministry of Health and Welfare has adapted a system to educate and certify nurse specialists in 10 nursing areas in 21 nursing graduate schools expecting high-quality nursing services and a decrease of cost. The government also allowed nurses to operate facilities for health management or welfare agencies.
Purpose: Effective transitional care is needed to improve the quality of life in older adult patients with chronic illness and avoid discontinuity of care and adverse events. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of the key features, broader implications, and the utility of Meleis' transition theory intended for the transitional care of older adults with chronic illnesses. We present the role of nurse in the context of transitional care and propose future directions to increase the quality of nursing care. Methods: The online databases Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, MEDLINE, and Science Direct were searched for relevant literature published since 1970 along with textbooks regarding nursing theory. Results: An evaluation of the usefulness of transition theory based on transitional care in older adult patients with chronic illnesses is provided. Healthy transition should be the expected standard of nursing care for older adults across all healthcare settings. Conclusion: Nurses need to contribute to the development of transitional care for vulnerable populations; however, transition theory needs to be enhanced through additional theoretical work and repeated evaluations of the applicability in areas of transitional care.
This study was conducted to identify the current situation of home care nursing research and to propose future research in the area of home care nursing in Korea. The design was a retrospective descriptive study based on 171 studies. The studies were collected from nursing academic magazines, the national library web site and dissertations on home care. The data were classified according to the independent and dependent variables which were represented in the research title. The final category classification was defined by considering the research objectives and content as found in the 171 studies. Eight categories were created to describe the results of home care nursing research in Korea. They included: home care needs. home care services. home care costs. development of home care programs and equipment. management of home care services. effectiveness of home care services, development of an educational curriculum for home care, and recognition of home care services. Based on our research we have identified other future research areas that need to be developed such as community needs assessment, standards and guidelines for home care nursing, quality assurance and quality improvement for controlling home care quality, home care informatics. and a system of home care cost and ethics.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine learning styles and preferred learning methods of undergraduate nursing students in Korea. Method: Data was collected from 724 nursing students at five universities in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, and Gwangju. Kolb's Learning Style Inventory, a self-report questionnaire was completed. Result: Learning styles of nursing students were diverger 43.5%, accommodator 36.7%, assimilator 10.8%, or converger 9.0% Learning styles were significantly different related to preferred future clinical practice area and grade. Furthermore, active experimentation(AE) learning mode was significantly different by grade. Concrete experience(CE), conceptualization(AC), and active experimentation(AE) learning modes were significantly different preferred future clinical practice area. preferred learning methods were lecture 40.7%, clinical practice 37.2%, self-directed learning 8.7%, laboratory practice 8.0%, and group discussion 5.4%. Preferred learning methods were significantly different by learning styles and grade. Lecture was preferred in diverger and assimilator. Clinical practice was preferred in accommodator and converger. Styles Conclusion: This study suggested that nursing education should be applied to nursing students after examining learning styles and preferred learning methods. In conclusion, nursing educators should help to develop various learning modes for student's balanced learning capabilities.
Purpose: This study was aimed to analyze the contents and trend of published research in oncology nursing during the past five years in Korea and to suggest the direction for future research. Methods: Using the key words "cancer", "cancer patients", and "tumor", 391 nursing research published from 2003 to 2008 were selected for the analysis. Results: 1) Three hundred fifty-five (90.8%) of the studies used quantitative research approach, whereas most studies were descriptive in nature. 2) The main subjects of the study were cancer patients with mixed diagnosis (36.4%) and breast cancer patients (20.0%). 3) Complementary alternative therapy (28.9%), educational program (25.6%), and psycho-social and spiritual program (16.7%) were the most frequently used nursing interventions. Most frequently measured outcome variables were psycho, socio, and spiritual factors (38.8%), symptoms (28.2%) and physiological factors (14.6%). 4) Most frequently used key words were identified as quality of life, fatigue, coping, pain, anxiety, anorexia, and depression. Conclusion: The number of published research in oncology nursing in Korea has been increased. It is suggested to conduct international studies to develop, compare, and replicate nursing interventions for patients with cancer in future. Increasing funding, establishing research infrastructure, and removing methodological challenges are warranted for better research environment.
Purpose: This study attempts to identify the level of awareness, ethical awareness, and decision-making among nursing students, in response to pandemic infectious diseases. Methods: Subjects were 210 nursing college students attending colleges in 5 cities and provinces nationwide. Data were collected from November 2017 to April 2018 using a self-administrated questionnaire, and analyzed utilizing descriptive statistics. Results: Considering the awareness of pandemic infectious diseases, the nursing students expressed high concern about the possibility of future outbreaks of pandemic infectious diseases and seriousness of the situation. There were numerous negative views on the response and stockpiling of drugs by the government. Ethical awareness of pandemic infectious diseases was high, with demands for accurate information and proper protective equipment. Overall, ethical decision-making when responding to pandemic infectious diseases represented a high score. Also, higher awareness levels of pandemic infectious diseases would result in increased ethical and ethical decision-making. Conclusion: In conclusion, we propose the introduction of an ethical education program for medical personnel and nursing university students, to enable the handling of future pandemic outbreaks of new infectious diseases.
