The results are as follows: 1. The curriculum of the 4-year baccalaureate and 3-year diploma program are similar to each other in philosophy, educational objectives, and practical experience. However, advanced nursing courses in practical experience were taught by the 4-year baccalaureate degree program only. 2. For the development of a more advanced and effective curriculum, the 3-year diploma program should concentrate on nursing core courses (80 credits) such as 'adult nursing' 'maternal nursing' 'pediatric nursing' 'psychiatric nursing' 'community health nursing' 'fundamentals of nursing' 'managerial nursing'. Furthermore, nursing related courses (20 credits) and liberal education courses (20 credits) should also be offered by the 3-year diploma program. 3. This nursing curriculum should be conducted by registered nurses who have graduated from a 3-year diploma program. The nursing educational philosophy and the educational objectives of this curriculum are the same as the 4-year program recommended by the Korean Nurses Association. This curriculum consists of 2 parts: advanced nursing courses and liberal education courses. Method: A survey was used with three groups to identify consensus on a curriculum model for fundamentals of nursing at the graduate level; 42 educators in fundamentals of nursing, 11 nurse educators whose major was not fundamentals of nursing and 70 nurses with a bachelor degree in nursing. Results: Consensus on a curriculum model at the graduate level were delineated from analysis of the survey, Based on these results, a curriculum model fur fundamentals of nursing at the graduate level is outlined: As one major area of nursing, fundamentals of nursing focuses on nursing practice based on basic human needs. Thus main focus of the curriculum for fundamentals of nursing at the graduate level is research performance and theory development on nursing interventions to meet basic human needs in clinical settings. Conclusions: A curriculum model for fundamentals of nursing at the graduate level suggests that its application may have a positive impact on development of distinct knowledge body for fundamentals of nursing that will differentiate the content of education for undergraduate and graduate levels of nursing. However, the suggestion for the curriculum model needs to be refined and developed for application.

Method: Three round Delphi survey method was applied to find consensus of gerontological nursing competencies (knowledge, attitudes and skills) for graduates of nursing schools from the panel of gerontological nursing practice experts. Important concepts in gerontological nursing were delineated from literature review and discussions of gerontological nursing educators. Based on these results the gerontological nursing curriculum model was developed and course structure outlined by the researchers as a group. Result: As the result of delphi survey, 32 items of knowledge, 29 items of attitude, and 21 items of skill were identified. The curriculum model constructed around a cube with three plane- functional capacity levels, settings, and nursing practice. Specific knowledge, attitudes and skills for gerontological theory and practicum course were suggested. Competency items were assigned to theory and/or practice. Conclusion: A curriculum model for gerontological nursing has been developed by a group of gerontological nursing educators. The curriculum model should be further tested and developed with detailed theory and practicum course outline and textbooks.

  • Purpose: Competency-based curriculum has attracted many nursing institutions' attention, pursuing the enhancement of competency and the quality of education. The goal of this study was to not merely scrutinize the nomenclature of competency and competency model as a concept of pedagogy as well as nursing science, but also form a well understanding of development process for nursing competency-based curriculum and nursing competency modeling. Methods: A comprehensive review on related literatures was conducted in each section of 1) competency-based curriculum, 2) competency and competency model, and 3) contents of competency. Results: The nomenclature of competency including nursing competencies, competency modeling and competency-based curriculum were clarified and summarized. Through analyzing and reviewing former studies related to competency, desirable nursing competency modeling and nursing competency-based curriculum were proposed and described. Conclusion: Learner-centered curriculum should be established based on nursing education that emphasizes intellectual skills acquisition and the enhancement of future-oriented professionalism. Competency modeling should reflect the fact that teaching-learning strategies should focus on the integration of nursing theories and clinical practices. Nursing competency modeling is essential in order to develop a genuine competency-based curriculum while in-depth practical research should be followed so that nursing theories and clinical practices work together in a coordinated fashion.
