  • This paper describes a three-dimensional approach to modeling the nonlinear behavior of partial-depth precast prestressed concrete bridge decks under increasing static loading. Six full-size panels were analyzed with this approach where the damage plasticity constitutive model was used to model concrete. Numerical results were compared and validated with the experimental data and showed reasonable agreement. The discrepancy between numerical and experimental values of load capacities was within six while the discrepancy of mid-span displacement was within 10 %. Parametric study was also conducted to show that higher accuracy could be achieved with lower values of the viscosity parameter but with an increase in the calculation effort.

  • In this study, Taylor matrix algorithm is designed for the approximate solution of linear and non-linear differential equation systems. The algorithm is essentially based on the expansion of the functions in differential equation systems to Taylor series and substituting the matrix forms of these expansions into the given equation systems. Using the Mathematica program, the matrix equations are solved and the unknown Taylor coefficients are found approximately. The presented numerical approach is discussed on samples from various linear and non-linear differential equation systems as well as stiff systems. The computational data are then compared with those of some earlier numerical or exact results. As a result, this comparison demonstrates that the proposed method is accurate and reliable.

  • The present work reports on a numerical simulation of a compartment fire. The fire was modeled using a simplified approach, where combustion is simulated as a volumetric heat release. Computations were performed with the commercial code CFX 5.6. Radiation was modeled with a differential approximation (P1 model), while turbulence effects upon the mean gas flow were dealt with a SST turbulence model. Simulations were carried out using a transient approach, starting at the onset of ignition. Results are provided for the temperature field time evolution, thus allowing a direct comparison with the analytical and experimental data. The high spatial resolution available for the results proved to be of great utility for a more detailed analysis of the thermal impact on the steel structure.

  • A numerical approach to simulate the behaviour of timber shear walls under both static and dynamic loading is proposed. Because the behaviour of timber shear walls hinges on the behaviour of the nail connections, the force-displacement behaviour of sheathing-to-framing nail connections are first determined and then used to define the hysteretic properties of finite elements representing these connections. The model nails are subsequently implemented into model walls. The model walls are verified using experimental results for both monotonic and cyclic loading. It is demonstrated that the complex hysteretic behaviour of timber shear walls can be reasonably represented using model shear walls in which nonlinear material failure is concentrated only at the sheathing-to-framing nail connections.

  • Experimental testing is considered the most realistic approach to obtain a detailed representation of the nonlinear behaviour of masonry-infilled reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Among other applications, these tests can be used to calibrate the properties of numerical models such as simplified macro-models (e.g., strut-type models) representing the masonry infill behaviour. Since the significant cost of experimental tests limits their widespread use, alternative approaches need to be established to obtain adequate data to validate the referred simplified models. The proposed paper introduces a detailed finite element modelling strategy that can be used as an alternative to experimental tests to represent the behaviour of masonry-infilled RC frames under earthquake loading. Several examples of RC infilled frames with different infill configurations and properties subjected to cyclic loading are analysed using the proposed modelling approach. The comparison between numerical and experimental results shows that the numerical models capture the overall nonlinear behaviour of the physical specimens with adequate accuracy, predicting their monotonic stiffness, strength and several failure mechanisms.

  • For the analysis of solids containing a number of microinclusions or microvoids, in which the mechanical effect of each inclusion or void, a numerical approach is need to be developed to understand the mechanical behavior of damaged solids containing these defects. In this study, the simulation method using the natural element method is proposed for the analysis of effective elastic moduli. The mechanical effect of each inclusion or void is considered by controlling the material constants for Gaussian points. The relationship between area fraction of microinclusions or microvoids and effective elastic moduli is studied to verify the validity of the proposed method. The obtained results are in good agreement with the theoretical results such as differential method, self-consistent method, Mori-Tanaka method, as well as the numerical results by rigid body spring model.

  • For the prediction on the onset of oblique shock wave-induced vortex breakdown, computational studies on the Oblique Shock wave/Vortex Interaction (OSVI) are conducted and compared with both experimental results and analytic model. A Shock-stable numerical scheme, the Roe scheme with Mach number-based function (RoeM), and a two-equation eddy viscosity-transport approach are used for three-dimensional turbulent flow computations. The computational configuration is identical to available experiment, and we attempt to ascertain the effect of parameters such as a vertex strength, streamwise velocity deficit, and shock strength at a freestream Mach number of 2.49. Numerical simulations using the ${\kappa}-{\omega}SST$ turbulence model and suitably modeled vortex profiles are able to accurately reproduce many fine features through a direct comparison with experimental observations. The present computational approach to determine the criterion on the onset of oblique shock wave-induced vortex breakdown is found to be in good agreement with both the experimental result and the analytic prediction.

  • Electromagnetic forming (EMF) technology, which is one of the high speed forming methods, has been used for the forming process in various industry fields. Numerical approach by finite element simulation of the EMF process is presented in this study. The implicit code is used to obtain the numerical model of the time-varying currents that are discharged through the coil in order to obtain the transient magnetic forces. In addition, the body forces generated in the workpiece are used as the loading condition to analyze deformation of thin sheet metal workpiece using explicit code. Numerical approach for a dimpled shape by EMF process is carried out and the simulated results of the dimpled shape by EMF are reviewed in view of the deformed shape and formability evaluation.

  • A sophisticated finite element modeling approach is proposed to simulate unbonded post-tensioned concrete slabs. Particularly, finite element contact formulation was employed to simulate the sliding behavior of unbonded tendons. The contact formulation along with other discretizing schemes was selected to assemble the post-tensioned concrete system. Three previously tested unbonded post-tensioned two-way and one-way slabs with different reinforcement configurations and boundary conditions were modeled. Numerical results were compared against experimental data in terms of global pressure-deflection relationship, stiffness degradation, cracking pattern, and stress variation in unbonded tendons. All comparisons indicate a very good agreement between the simulations and experiments. The exercise of model validation showcased the robustness and reliability of the proposed modeling approach applied to numerical simulation of post-tensioned concrete slabs.
