  • Radar rainfall estimates have been widely used in calculating rainfall amount approximately and predicting flood risks. The radar rainfall estimates have a number of error sources such as beam blockage and ground clutter hinder their applications to hydrological flood forecasting. Moreover, it has been reported in paper that those errors are inter-correlated spatially and temporally. Therefore, in the current study, we tested influence about spatio-temporal errors in radar rainfall estimates. Spatio-temporal errors were simulated through a stochastic simulation model, called Multivariate Autoregressive (MAR). For runoff simulation, the Nam River basin in South Korea was used with the distributed rainfall-runoff model, Vflo. The results indicated that spatio-temporal dependent errors caused much higher variations in peak discharge than spatial dependent errors. To further investigate the effect of the magnitude of time correlation among radar errors, different magnitudes of temporal correlations were employed during the rainfall-runoff simulation. The results indicated that strong correlation caused a higher variation in peak discharge. This concluded that the effects on reducing temporal and spatial correlation must be taken in addition to correcting the biases in radar rainfall estimates. • Measurement of the location of the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) feature in the clustering of galaxies has proven to be a robust and precise method to measure the expansion of the Universe. The best constraints so far have been provided from spectroscopic surveys because the errors on the redshift obtained from spectroscopy are minimal. This in turn means that the errors along the line-of-sight are reduced and so one can expect constraints on both angular diameter distance $D_A$ and expansion rate $H^{-1}$. But, future surveys will probe a larger part of the sky and go to deeper redshifts, which correspond to more number of galaxies. Analysing each galaxy using spectroscopy, which is a time consuming task, will not be practically possible. So, photometry will be the most convenient way to measure redshifts for future surveys such as LSST, Euclid, etc. The advantage of photometry is measuring the redshift of vast number of galaxies in a single exposure, but the disadvantage are the errors associated with the measured redshifts. Using a wedge approach, wherein the clustering is split into different wedges along the line-of-sight ${\pi}$ and across the line-of-sight ${\sigma}$, we show that the BAO information can be recovered even for photometric catalogues with errors along the line-of-sight. This means that we can get cosmological distance constraints even if we don't have spectroscopic information.

  • A hybrid finite element analysis was used to analyze the influence of ring gear rim thickness and spline number on the static properties of a planetary gear system with manufacturing errors. Both of these parameters affected the bearing force and critical stress. The effect of changes in the rim thickness on the load sharing between the gears depended on the type of manufacturing error. Ring flexibility improved the load sharing between planetary gears only in systems with planet tooth thickness or planet tangential errors; for other types of error, ring flexibility worsened the load sharing. To improve load sharing, rim thickness and spline number should be controlled within a specific range. The minimum rim thickness limit should be determined considering not only the critical stress but also the load sharing. The effect of the ring gear boundary condition was more apparent in a system with errors than in a normal system.

  • Like the conventional digital storage systems, volume holographic memory can be deteriorated by burst errors due to its high-density storage characteristics. These burst errors are used byoptical defects such as scratches, dust particles, etc. and are two-dimensional in a data page. To deal with these errors, we introduce some concepts for describing them and propose efficient two- dimensional interleaving schemes. The schemes are two-dimensional lattices of an error-correction code word and have equilateral triangular and square structures. Using these structures, we can minimize the number of code words that are interleaved and improve the efficiency of the system. For large size burst errors, the efficient interleaving structure is an equilateral triangular lattice. However, for some small size burst errors, it is reduced to a square lattice.

  • This study is aimed to validate errors for detected suspicious temperature data using various quality control procedures for 61 weather stations in the Republic of Korea. The quality control algorithms for temperature data consist of four main procedures (high-low extreme check, internal consistency check, temporal outlier check, and spatial outlier check). Errors of detected suspicious temperature data are judged by examining temperature data of nearby stations, surface weather charts, hourly temperature data, daily precipitation, and daily maximum wind direction. The number of detected errors in internal consistency check and spatial outlier check showed 4 days (3 stations) and 7 days (5 stations), respectively. Effective and objective methods for validation errors through this study will help to reduce manpower and time for conduct of quality management for temperature data.

  • The purpose of this paper IS to investigate the aspects of errors of English stress by Korean students. In this experimental study, 17 students participated and read 120 words which are divided into three types-the beginning, the middle, and the advanced-according to the level of words. As a result of acoustical judgement, there were a greater number of errors In the advanced level of words, and the more syllables the words have, the more errors occurred, tins means Korean students who learn English as a second language have trouble realizing the right stress in words with larger numbers of syllables and the more advanced level. Furthermore it is interesting that Korean students imposed the primary stress on the second syllable when producing words with stress in the first, third and forth syllables.

  • This paper is concerned with forecasting the existing number of errors in the computer software and optimizing the stopping time of the software test based upon the forecasted number of errors. The most commonly used models have assessed software reliability under the assumption that the software failure late is proportional to the current fault content of the software but invariant to time since software faults are independents of others and equally likely to cause a failure during testing. In practice, it has been observed that in many situations, the failure rate decrease. Hence, this paper proposes a mathematical model to describe testing situations where the failure rate of software limearly decreases proportional to testing time. The least square method is used to estimate parameters of the mathematical model. A cost model to optimize the software testing time is also proposed. In this cost mode two cost factors are considered. The first cost is to test execution cost directly proportional to test time and the second cost is the failure cost incurred after delivery of the software to user. The failure cost is assumed to be proportional to the number of errors remained in the software at the test stopping time. The optimal stopping time is determined to minimize the total cost, which is the sum of test execution cast and the failure cost. A numerical example is solved to illustrate the proposed procedure.

  • Teachers and students' knowledge of zero was investigated through data collected from 16 preservice secondary mathematics teachers and 20 gifted secondary school students. Results showed that these teachers and students had an inadequate knowledge about zero. They exhibited a reluctance to accept zero as an attribute for classification, confusion as to whether or not zero is a number, and stable patterns of computational error. Although leachers and researchers have long recognized the value of analyzing student errors for diagnosis and remediation, students have not been encouraged to take advantage of errors as learning opportunities in mathematics instruction. The article suggests using errors as springboards for inquiry in action, discusses its potential contributions to mathematics instruction by analyzing students and preservice teachers errors related to zero.
