  • In this paper, a small supersonic wind tunnel is designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade. The flow is visualized by means of a single pass Schlieren system. The supersonic cascade with 2-dimensional supersonic nozzle was tested for various blade leading edge shapes and gaps between the nozzle and cascade. Highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions are observed.

  • New high-speed depressurized circulating water channel was designed by using the CFD code. Flow in the channel has free surface and pressure in the test section can be depressed. In this study, Flow separation and bubble occurrence were considered in designing the contraction nozzle shape for better flow uniformity Tn the test section. To supplement velocity defect due to the free surface, nozzle injection system more effective in high-speed flow was installed instead of drum system. Necessary power and injection techniques were proposed. And guide vane arrangement was analyzed to reduce the flow resistance and keep quiet free surface from ´surging´. Wave absorber was devised to reduce the wave resistance and to prevent the entrainment of air to the diffuser.

  • For axial-type turbines which operate at partial admission, a performance prediction model is developed. In this study, losses generated within the turbine are classified to windage loss, expansion loss and mixing loss. The developed loss model is compared with experimental results. Particularly, if a turbine operates at a very low partial admission rate, a circular-type nozzle is more efficient than a rectangular-type nozzle. For this case, a performance prediction model is developed and an experiment is conducted with the circular-type nozzle. The predicted result is compared with the measured performance, and the developed model quite well agrees with the experimental results. So the developed model could be applied to predict the performance of axial-type turbines which operate at various partial admission rates or with different nozzle shape.

  • Experimental and theoretical researches about jet pump have been carried out by many researchers. Jet pump can be used for the transportation of solid materials, farm produce, and fishes. It is the purpose of this paper to seek optimal multi nozzle shape of the annular jet pump. Experiments were done for several jet nozzle areas, jet nozzle arrays and jet nozzle lengths. Water was used for both the primary fluid and secondary fluid. The efficiency curves for the annular jet pump having multi nozzles are presented in this paper.

  • This paper presents an achieving method of reducing maximum acceleration for the missile by decrease of burst pressure in a nozzle closure. The relation of notch shape and burst pressure for a nozzle closure is examined by experiment. In the point of maximum acceleration reduction for a missile, an improved nozzle closure effects well compared with that of a reference closure by ground burning test of a gas generator.

  • In this study, the effect of injection nozzle shape on the supersonic film cooling performance is analyzed using CFD. The design parameters are inside and outside angles of upper plate of nozzle and nozzle tip thickness. It is observed that the mass flow rate of film cooling decreases with increase of inside angle, while the effect of the change of mass flow rate on the film cooling effectiveness is relatively small. In addition, cooling performance is generally reduced, except ahead of the local region where shock wave interaction with film cooling occurs, in accordance with the growth of the outside angle and tip thickness. In this paper, the CFD simulation is performed using a commercial software, ANSYS Fluent V15.0, and the CFD model is validated by comparing it with the experimental data shown in preceding research.

  • A supersonic nozzle specially is one of the important part in a supersonic turbine usually adapted the impulse type, because the flow acceleration in the turbine theoretically is done only in the nozzle. The present study deals with numerical flow analysis to investigate the effect of nozzle shapes on the performance characteristics of a partial admission supersonic turbine. The flow analysis was performed for four different nozzle shapes. The shapes of the nozzles are circular, square, straight rectangular and bent rectangular nozzles. The results of the flow analysis showed that the aerodynamic loss of turbine is highly affected by the nozzle shapes, and the partial admission loss is also highly depended on nozzle shapes. Specially, bent rectangular nozzle had the best performance among the nozzle shapes

  • This paper predicted the engineering constants of spatially reinforced carbon/ carbon composites and analyzed the mechanical behaviour of the kick motor nozzle. Those equivalent engineering constants are used to analyze the mechanical behaviour of the kick motor nozzle. Because the distribution of equivalent engineering constants is varying as change its structure, we made a program to predict engineering constants of spatially reinforced composites. The kick motor nozzle consists of graphite or spatially reinforced carbon/ carbon composites for the nozzle throat, carbon/ phenol for the nozzle entrance and the expansion part, and steel for the outer surface of the expansion part. The 4-D carbon/ carbon composite shows the smallest deformed shape of the nozzle throat, which has a favorable effect on the rocket thrust, and the most uniform deformation of all nozzle throat materials. In addition to analysis, ground firing tests of 4D C/ C nozzle throat and graphite nozzle throat were performed.

  • In the modern propulsion systems, requited thrust is obtained using a nozzle. Sometimes shock and induced boundary layer separation is generated in an over-expanded convergent-divergent supersonic nozzle. It occurs because the nozzle expansion ratio is too large for a given nozzle pressure ratio (NPR). This phenomenon can be explained that it redefines effective nozzle geometry, shorer nozzle geometry and lower pressure ratio, in a given pressure ratio. Numerical studies were conducted about a fixed geometry 2D nozzle in overexpanded condition and compared with Hunter's experimental result. For the numerical simulation of the supersonic nozzle, Navier-Stokes equations are considered and as a turbulent model, $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ /$\kappa$-$\omega$ blended SST two equation turbulent model is used. The characteristics of $\lambda$-shape shock systems due to the interaction of shock and boundary layer was investigated in a low NPR. And the result of comparison of thrust value shows that a fixed geometry nozzle can cover required flight mission.
