Novel methods of increasing the storage volume at Pumped Storage Power plants

  • The paper presents two novel concepts of increasing the energy storage capacity at pumped storage power plants, both existing and new projects. The concepts utilize compressed air as a working medium to displace water from a volume originally not available for storage. The concepts are likely to give additional storage volume at a low cost, however, much development and many investigations are needed before the concepts can be shown to be technical and economical feasible solutions for energy storage. The concepts are disclosed so that researchers and utilities can start those investigations, hopefully helping the green transition by providing highly valuable energy storage for a future renewable energy having a much higher share of renewable energies than the current systems.

Automatic Acquisition of Domain Concepts for Ontology Learning using Affinity Propagation (온톨로지 학습을 위한 Affinity Propagation 기반의 도메인 컨셉 자동 획득 기법에 관한 연구)

  • One important issue in semantic web is identification and selection of domain concepts for domain ontology learning when several hundreds or even thousands of terms are extracted and available from relevant text documents shared among the members of a domain. We present a novel domain concept acquisition and selection approach for ontology learning that uses affinity propagation algorithm, which takes as input semantic and structural similarity between pairs of extracted terms called data points. Real-valued messages are passed between data points (terms) until high quality set of exemplars (concepts) and cluster iteratively emerges. All exemplars will be considered as domain concepts for learning domain ontologies. Our empirical results show that our approach achieves high precision and recall in selection of domain concepts using less number of iterations.

Clowns in David Copperfield (『데이빗 코퍼필드』에서의 광대들)

  • This article aims to illuminate the comic characters and their humor in Dickens's novel David Copperfield in Bakhtinian point, and to clarify what the humorous characteristics are, and how they contribute to his reinforcement of socially critical messages in this novel. So far this novel has been called the only one of Dickens's comic novels, even though it includes lots of social critical meanings. But it is true that Dickensian critics couldn't make sure of the clear reasons why it is both very interesting and critical. Furthermore, it is also true that this novel has been criticized as a clumsy one in the realistic, psycho-analytic, dramatic angle. This approach to Dickensian comic characters through Bakhtinian fool, clown, and rogue concepts here could make up for or correct such criticisms, and reevaluate Dickens's humor and social criticisms in the context of general public culture. Bakhtin believes oppression by social ideologies prevent us from having good mutual relationships and divides our society. He thinks laughter liberates us from such oppression and restores our good relationships. As he applied his concepts based on the laughter of Middle Ages to Rabelais's novels, and examined what the authentically liberating power in Rabelais's laughter is, this article could clarify the liberating power of laughter by Dickens's comic characters, such as Mr and Mrs Micawber, Dick, Miss Betsey Trotwood and Miss Mowcher. In this novel, they often lead comic happenings, and such happenings are very similar to carnival-amusements including burning the dummy of the czar who has oppressed his or her citizenry. Especially, Dickens's comic characters's social criticisms, in the case of this novel, contain many complaints of social marginers, even though he has been labelled as being conservative politically. They always criticize the ideological absurdities in their society through the humorous words and behaviors in their comic happenings, like those of a carnival fool or clown in his or her amusements. This shows Dickens achieves both laughter and social criticism in David Copperfield by using Rabelaisian characterization-devices based on his general public culture. Like Bakhtin and Rabelais, Dickens seems to have believed that when we all truly liberate ourselves from the oppression of social ideologies, we can have desirable relationships between ourselves, and also solve social problems positively.

  • With increasing design complexity, shrinking time-to-market window, and various demands from markets, the traditional design methodologies reach-ed a ceiling. In a search for a way to tackle these problems, novel concepts and methodologies have been proposed in the past years. The paper briefly presents the design issues, and concepts, introduces commercial tools, and finally proposes a conceptual methodology that addresses the issues.

  • In this research article, we introduce certain concepts, including domination, total domination, strong domination, weak domination, edge domination and total edge domination in m-polar fuzzy graphs. We describe these concepts by several examples. We investigate some related properties of certain dominations in m-polar fuzzy graphs. We also present a decision making method based on domination in m-polar fuzzy graphs.

  • Online image dictionary has become more and more popular in concepts cognition. However, for existing online systems, only very few images are manually picked to demonstrate the concepts. Currently, there is very little research found on automatically choosing large scale online images with the help of semantic analysis. In this paper, we propose a novel framework to utilize community-generated online multimedia content to visually illustrate certain concepts. Our proposed framework adapts various techniques, including the correlation analysis, semantic and visual clustering to produce sets of high quality, precise, diverse and representative images to visually translate a given concept. To make the best use of our results, a user interface is deployed, which displays the representative images according the latent semantic coherence. The objective and subjective evaluations show the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach.

  • This paper reviews development trends of ferroelectric memories. Materials requirements, integration issues, device structures are reviewed for 1T-1C and 1Tr type FRAM. Other types of FRAM such as DSRAM and SFRAM are also described. Limitations in FRAM development are discussed for the viewpoint of memory concept and material properties. Finally, novel FRAM structures and operational concepts are proposed in order to avoid such limitations.

Learning experience of undergraduate medical students during 'model preparation' of physiological concepts

  • Purpose: Learning physiological concepts and their practical applications in the appropriate contexts remains a great challenge for undergraduate medical students. Hence the present study aimed to analyze the learning experience of undergraduate medical students during an active learning process of 'preparation of models' depicting physiological concepts. Methods: A total of 13 groups, involving 55 undergraduate medical students with three to five individuals in each group, were involved in model preparation. A total of 13 models were exhibited by the students. The students shared their learning experiences as responses to an open-ended questionnaire. The students' responses were analyzed and generalized comments were generated. Results: Analysis of the results showed that the act of 'model preparation' improved concept understanding, retention of knowledge, analytical skills, and referral habits. Further, the process of 'model preparation' could satisfy all types of sensory modality learners. Conclusion: This novel active method of learning could be highly significant in students' understanding and learning physiology concepts. This approach could be incorporated in the traditional instructor-centered undergraduate medical curriculum as a way to innovate it.
