As a preliminary study of enter or leaving traffic patterns of the Korea main port, port Management Information System (Port-MIS) data was used to check the volume of vessels entering and leaving the port of Busan, and three consecutive days from each seasons were selected for study. Selected 12-day General Information Center on Maritime Safety & Security (GICOMS) data was also used to analyze the traffic pattern in the main traffic lane of Busan port for dangerous goods carrier. Also, the distance between dangerous goods carriers and Oryukdo breakwater of east breakwater in the main traffic lane was analyzed. Collision probability was estimated using the cumulative probability distribution function of the normal distribution for the maritime traffic safety audit scheme based on the assumption that a ship's trajectory has a normal distribution for a section of the route. However, in case of entry or leaving thorough the Oryukdo breakwater and entry thorough the east breakwater, ship's sailing trajectories were revealed not to follow a normal distribution via regularity testing using a KS-test and SW-test. Especially in the north port, the tendency of the right side of the ship to pass was remarkable. It is desirable to develop a traffic model suitable for the characteristics of the port rather than to apply general traffic theories, and to apply this model to a maritime traffic safety diagnosis, so further research is needed.

This paper presents a general overview of the Korean stick-held dip net fishery for Pacific saury operated in the North Pacific Ocean since 1985. Annual catches, annual centroids distribution of fishing ground, and optimum fishing temperatures were compared between the periods before and after the new Korea-Japan bilateral fishery arrangement established in 1998. Fishing usually began in May and ended by December, during which major catches were taken in the months September~November before the bilateral fishery arrangement between Korea and Japan, whereas in August~October after the arrangement. It was observed that after the arrangement the centroids of fishing ground was shifted from the usual fishing area off the east coast of Japan to the east of South Kuril Islands, 45$^{\circ}$N and 151$^{\circ}$E. Optimum fishing temperatures appeared to be different by month ; 12.5~14.4$^{\circ}C$ in May, 12.0~14.2$^{\circ}C$ in June, 11.4~13.9$^{\circ}C$ in July, 11.4~15.9$^{\circ}C$ in August, 12.9~16.9$^{\circ}C$ in September, 12.7~17.3$^{\circ}C$ in October, 13.1~17.6$^{\circ}C$ in November, and 15.0~19.1$^{\circ}C$ in December. A total of 13 species were caught during scientific observation periods but the target species, Pacific saury, accounted for about 99.9% of the total catch. Although there was no difference in fishing days between those vessels equipped with the sonar and those without sonar, number of set, total catch, and CPUE of those with sonar were higher than those without sonar by 13%, 26%, and 12%, respectively.
In the East Sea of Korea the vertical structure functions of the temperature field were evaluated and the characteristic thermal zone was classified by the use of the empirical orthogonal function(EOF) method. The East Sea of Korea within the hydrographic lines of 10-107 of the Fisheries Research and Development Agency of Korea(FRDA) can be divided into three thermal regions by the characteristics of the vertical temperature variability. They are the North Korean Cold Current(NKCC) region near the coast which extends parallel to the north-south direction, the Warm-Core(WC) region which dominates almost all the hydrographic stations of the Line 104 of the FRDA and occupies a few stations of the Line-103 and -105 with its axis at the Line 104, and the East Korea Warm Current(EKWC) region which is bisected into the northern and the southern part by the WC region, respectively. Considering the two most important modes, $85.20-98.20\%$ of the total variance of temperature variation are explained in the NKCC region, $85.20-92.90\%$ in the EKWC region, and$85.50-91.70\%$ in the WC region. The first mode has its peak value at the surface with the annual cycle of variation. The spatial pattern of the first mode portrays a coherent vertical variation in the EKWC region and a clear anti-correlation both in the NKCC region and in the WC region where the zero-crossing depths are loom and 200m, respectively. The second mode of the NKCC region is particularly noticeable, haying its peak at loom with coherent vertical variation. To study the time dependency of the vertical structure functions, the extended EOF(EEOF) method was used. The persistence of the first mode is less than 4 months in the study area. The annual variation of the first mode in the NKCC region is different from those in the WC region and in the EKWC region.
The environs of Korea in winter season are influenced by the distribution of atmospheric pressure, namely, the typical east-low and west-high pattern that is formed from both the Siberian continental high pressure and the Aleutian oceanic low pressure. In this reason, the violent West or North-West monsoon, the billows with the strong wind, and the tremendous heavy snowfall are encountered very frequently in the West Sea. In this study, the trajectories of the extratropical cyclone are analysed to choose the safe refuge areas of National Fishery Supervision Vessel using the surface analysis weather chart for 11 years from 1994 to 2004. The safe refuge areas according to the trajectories of the extratropical cyclone in the West Sea are decided using data that contain the topographical properties of island, the depth of water, the state of low quality, the influence of tidal current, and the distribution of fishing-net.

To ascertain the feasibility of the energy utilization in the sea adjacent to Korea, the distribution of the vertical temperature difference and the seasonal variation in the southeastern Yellow Sea are studied in relation to the sea water circulation. In summer, a region of high vertical temperature difference of approximately 16$^{\circ}C$ was found at a distance of approximately 40 miles from the western coast of Korea. It is located at the west of 125${\circ}$ 30`E and at the north of 34${\circ}$N. The vertical temperature structure is sustained by the inflow of Yellow Sea Warm Current water, the warming of the surface water of the Yellow Sea and the periodical renewal of the Yellow Sea Cold Water. It may be stated that power can be obtained from the sea water by making the use of the temperature difference. The vertical temperature difference was around 14$^{\circ}C$ in the western and southern waters of Jejudo Island. The vertical temperature difference decreases in autumn, and disappears due chiefly to the vigorous convective vertical mixing in winter when the northwest monsoon prevails. The power can be obtained from sea throughout the year, if power generation by the temperature difference is combined with that by wind and wave, and systemized in such a way that the former is employed in the hot season of summer, while the latter in winter and spring.

The Coastal VTS will be continuously constructed to prevent marine traffic accidents in the coastal waters of the Republic of Korea. In order to provide the best traffic information service to the ship operator, it is important to understand the navigation risk factor. In this study, we analyzed the navigational hazards of Gunsan coastal area where the coastal VTS will be constructed until 2020. For this purpose, major traffic flows of merchant ships and density of vessels engaged in fishing were analyzed. This study was conducted by Automatic Identification System (AIS) and Vessel Pass (V-PASS) data. The grid intervals are 10 minute ${\times}$ 10 minute (latitude ${\times}$ longitude) based on the section of the sea. A total of 30 sections were analyzed by constructing a grid. As a result of the analysis, the major traffic flows of the merchant vessels in the coastal area of Gunsan were surveyed from north to south toward Incheon, Pyeongtaek, Daesan, Yeosu, Pusan and Ulsan, and from east to west in the port of Gunsan Port, 173-3, 173-6, 173-8, 183-2, 183-5, 183-8, 183-3, 184-1 and 184-2. As a result of the study, the fishing boats in Gunsan coastal area mainly operated in spring and autumn. On the other hand, the main traffic flow of merchant ships and the distribution of fishing vessels continue to overlap from March to June, so special attention should be paid to the control during this period.
The spatial and temporal behaviors and fluctuations of the cold water that appeared in the South East Sea and the East Sea coast from 2016 to 2017 were investigated. The water temperature drop was large in the east coast from April to June and the southeast coast from July to September, and the temperature drop period was longer in the southeast coast. The water temperature fluctuated sensitively to the wind direction, and it gradually decreased in the southwest wind but rose as if jumping in the northeast wind. Wind stress and surface water temperature had an inverse correlation, which was larger in Bukhang-Idukseo, and decreased toward the north of Guryongpo. The cold water appeared mainly in Geojedo-Pohang after 1 to 2 days when the southwest wind was strong, but when the wind became weak, it shrank to the Idukseo (Ulgi-Gampo) and extended into the open sea in a tongue shape. Cold water was distributed only in Samcheok-Toseong in mid-May, Idukseo-Guryongpo and Hupo-Jukbyeon-Samcheok from late May to mid-July, and Bukhang-Idukseo in August-September. The intensity of cold water was greatest in mid-August, and the center of cold water descended from the east coast to the southeast coast from spring to summer. The water temperature fluctuation was dominant at the periods of 1 d and 7-21 d. In wavelet spectrum analysis of water temperature and wind, wind speed increase-water temperature decrease showed phase difference of 12 h in 2 d, 18 h in 3 d, 1.5 d in 4-8 d, and 2-3 d in 8-24 d period. The correlation between the two parameters was large in Geojedo and Namhang, Bukhang-Idukseo, Guryongpo-Jukbyeon, and Samcheok-Toseong. Monitoring stations with high correlation in all periods were generally parallel to the monsoon direction.

Temporal and spatial variations of surface water temperature in Jinju Bay for the period of 2010~2011 were studied using the data from temperature monitoring buoys deployed at 17 stations in the south coast of Korea. Water temperature shows the maximum late in January and the minimum early in August. Seasonal variation of water temperatures at the north part of the bay is smaller than the middle and the south. In summer, the lowest and the highest of maximum water temperature are distributed around Jijok Channel which is located at the south of the bay. The fluctuations of water temperatures at Noryang and Daebang Channel are smaller than others because of vertical mixing caused by passage of strong tidal currents. Wind and strong currents affect on the stratification of the surface water layer near Daebang Channel. High temperatures come in frequently around the north area when eastward constant flows appear at neap tide as blowing westerly in the springtime at Noryang Channel. Spectral analyses of temperature records show significant peaks at 7~20 day periods at Noryang Channel, 7~20 day and semidiurnal at the west coast of Changsun Island and Jijok Channel and 7~20 day and diurnal at the middle of the bay. Temperature fluctuation at Noryang Channel shows high coherence and has leading phase with those at other stations in the bay. However, the phase of temperature fluctuation at Noryang Channel falls behind that at Daebang Channel. Daebang Channel has an influence on the temperature fluctuation only at the west and middle part of the bay. Cross-correlation analyses for the temperature fluctuation show that Jinju Bay could be classified into six areas; Noryang Channel, the area of convergence and divergence at the north, Daebang Channel, the west coast of Changsun Island, the mixing area at the middle of the bay and the south inside of the bay, respectively.

Some environmental parameters on the shell-fish farms in Deukryang and Gamagyang Bays during summer in 1981 were determined to find an eutrophication level for the conservation of the farm. Chlorophyll-a content in the seawater in the Deukryang Bay in September was $1.0{\sim}5.0{\mu}g/l$ with an average of $2.5{\mu}g/l$ In the superficial bottom muds, contents of COD were 5-10 mg/g, ignition loss $5-9\%$, phaeophytin pigment $2{\sim}5{\mu}g/g$, and sulfide 0.1-0.3 mg/g dry mud in both bays. High contents of both organic matters and sulfide were found in the innermost area of the Deukryang Bay and in the north western part of the Gamagyang Bay. All quantities including chlorphyll-a in the water are little less than or similar to those of Hansan-Geoje Bay, one of the most productive shellfish farms in the southern coastal waters in Korea . Eutrophication on both water and bottom mud was under way like other shellfish farms but pollution indices on the bottom mud calculated from the data of CODs and phaeophytin pigments shelved 6-11, which is much lower than those of Jinhae Bay and of the Hansan-Geoje Bay. This means that the bottom muds are in an early stage of eutrophication, unlike the Jinhae and Hansan-Geoje Bays though the water, similar to the other bays, shows a middle stage of eutrophication.

We examined the relationship between the 50m temperature estimated by remote sensing sea surface temperature (SST) and fishing ground (squid fishing ground) detected by nighttime visible channel defense meteorological satellite program (DMSP) I operational linescan system (OLS) images in the East/Japan Sea during 1993-2000. The results are as follows: The numbers of nighttime fishing boat were distributed the highest in October, and the lowest in April during this study. A nighttime fishing grounds have concentrated in the East Korea Warm Current region, coastal regions of Honshu Island, and Polar front region. Fishing grounds have distributed $11-18^{\circ}C$ of estimated 50m temperature from the satellite data. Relationship between estimated 50m temperature and the distributed fisheries boats showed that the north boundaries of fishing grounds have distributed the temperature of below $12^{\circ}C$ from 1996 to 2000 and that of $13-15^{\circ}C$ during 1993-1995 and 1997-1999. Stable fishing grounds appeared near the Korea/Tsushima Strait from January to March. The center of fishing grounds in spring (April-Jun) have moved to the northward than that in winter, and variations appeared largely in winter. In summer (July-September), center of fishing grounds have formed near the Uleung Island in the south east coast of Korea, and in autumn maximum fishing ground appeared in October, the fishing ground southward from November.
