Although natural soil deposits hat.e been consolidated under Ko-stress system, the soil behavior has been predicted in laboratory from the results of tests performed on specimens consolidated under an isotropic stress s).stem. A series of undrained triaxial compression tests are performed on remolded specimens of clay consolidated under both types of stress systems, and the results at.e compared. One dimensional consolidation history induces anisotropy in clalrs, which is called as the stress induced anisotropy. However, if the clays would be reconsolidated under isotropic stress system. the anisotropy of undrained stress비h would be decreased with decrease of overconsolidation ratio. Undrained shear strength of norma]Iy consolidated clay depends on consolidation methods. Both the Rutledge hypothesis and the study of Henkel and Sowa do not agree with the test results obtained in this paper. In addition, a new theory is explained about the relationships between consolidation stresses, water contents and undiained shear strength.

Consolidation tests under various deformation modes were performed to investigate the effect of deformation modes on the coefficient of consolidation in the normally consolidated clay in remolded and undisturbed clay. The degree of soil anisotropy was evaluated using cross-anisotropic elasticity theory suggested by Graham et al.(1983). Experimental results showed that the vertical compressibility was larger than the horizontal compressibility by $12{\sim}21%$ for the remolded clay and by $23{\sim}60%$ for the undisturbed clay, respectively. The results of a series of consolidation tests under the specific deformation modes showed that the coefficient of consolidation under 1 dimensional vertical strain condition was larger than that under 3 dimensional strain condition due to different deformation mode. Furthermore, the coefficient of consolidation under 1 dimensional vertical strain condition was larger than that under 1 dimensional horizontal strain condition by $40{\sim}60%$ in undisturbed clay, which clearly emphasized the significant effect of soil anisotropy on the rate of consolidation. Consequently, it can be concluded that the anisotropic deformation modes of soils, especially naturally deposited clays, should be taken into account for more accurate evaluation of the coefficient of consolidation.
In this paper, utilizing void ratio-effective stress and void ratio-permeability relationships, a system of two nonlinear partial differential equations is derived to predict the consolidation characteristics of normally consolidated (NC) and overconsolidated (OC) soft clays subjected to cyclic loading. A developed feature of the coefficient of consolidation containing two key parameters is emerged from the differential equations. Effect of these parameters on the consolidation characteristics of soft clays is analytically discussed. It is shown that the ratios between the slopes of e-$log{\sigma}^{\prime}$ and e-log k lines in the NC and OC states play a major role in the consolidation process. In the companion paper, the critical assumptions made in the analytical discussion are experimentally verified and a numerical study is carried out in order to examine the proposed theory.
The behavior of clays subjected to Repeated loading has been shown to be very different from the behavior under a single load application. Especially the behavior of pore water pressure is Qf considerable importance. The objective of this work is to experimentally study the stress-strain characteristics of clays, and this study includes the pore water pressure which is built up during the load repetition. For this study, the samples were consolidated isotropically in the triaxial cell during 24 hours, .and monotonic strain controlled triaxial test is carried out by uslng the tests of Compression failure, Cycled at failure, and Nonfailure equilibrium on remoulded samples under undrained .condition . Consequently there exists a critical level of repeated loading which seperates the behavior of a particular sample into two distinctly different patterns.

The estimation of consolidation rate is one of the important factors in the construction on soft clayey deposits. A number of researches are carried out to predict the consolidation behavior in field, however, most of the results show the discrepancies between the prediction and observation. This paper analyzes consolidation behavior of normally consolidated clay in K/sub o/ condition with 2-dimensional drainage by use of the numerical methods. Elastic and elastic-plastic finite element analyses are compared in terms of the dissipation of excess pore pressure. These results are also compared with Terzaghi-Rendulic's equation that is implemented by finite difference method. The consolidation time calculated by using elastic model is found to be similar to the result of Terzaghi-Rendulic's equation. The consolidation predicted by MCC model takes more time than other cases. Initial increase of excess pore pressure in radial drainage can be shown, however, this phenomenon does not have a significant effect on tile final consolidation time.
Settlement analysis based on oedometer test results with or without Skempton-Bjerrum's modification method ( widely used for practical purposes when estimating consolidation settlements of soft clay deposits) has shortcomings that it cannot simulate real stress states and deformation behaviors of soils in case that in-situ loading and deformation conditions are not 1-dimensional. In this study, the stress path method, reflecting various probable stress paths, was employed to normally - consolidated kaolinite samples by using automated triaxial testing device which can control stress paths automatically. From this experimental study, elastic, consolidation, secondary compression and pore pressure development - dissipation behaviors under various stress paths were analyzed and deformation characteristics of soft clays, which can be the basis of rational estimation of settlements, were studied. Also by comparing results of stress path tests with those of 1-dimensional consolidation tests, limitations and problems of conventional methods were clarified.
Consolidation properties of Shihwa deposits were analysed by means of depositional environments. Depositional environments including particle size distributions, sediment structures, geochemical properties, porewater chemistries and carbon age dating were analysed using undisturbed samples retrieved successively from a boring hole in the study area. Laboratory oedometer tests and anisotropic consolidated triaxial tests (CKoUC) for undisturbed samples were performed to examine the overconsolidation phenomena. Based on the results of analysis of depositional environments, it was found that the upper silt/clay mixed layer was deposited under marine condition while underlying sand and clay layers were deposited under fluvial condition. Planar laminated structures of silts and clays were dominant in marine deposits. Although there was no clear evidences that geological erosion had occurred in marine deposits, overconsolidation ratios of the upper marine samples were greater than unity Stress Paths of the upper marine samples behaved similarly to those of normally consolidated clays. Data plotted in stress state charts showed that the marine deposits were normally consolidated in geological meaning. These apparent overconsolidation of the marine deposits can be explained by the structures i.e. chemical bonding due to the difference of the rate of deposition, not by geological erosions and ground water fluctuations.

After clay particles have been sedimented isotropically, the clay deposits have been consolidated under $K_0$-stress system. Therefore, in order to predict the behavior in-situ of normally consolidated clays, the effect of $K_0$-consolidation should be considered. A series of undrained and drained triaxial compression tests was performed on remolded specimens of clay consolidated under both $K_0$-and isotropic stress systems and the effect of $K_0$-consolidation was investigated. $K_0$-consolidation has much effect on the deviator stress, especially at initial deformation stage of consolidated-undrained tests, but has little effect on the principal effective stress ratio. Thus, the undrained strength behavior of $K_0$-consolidated samples can not be predicted from isotropically consolidated test data. However, the failure envelop, provided by the maximum principal effective stress ratio failure criterion, is unique and curved.

Highly plastic clays in their normally consolidated state are not linear but are concave upwards. Thus their compression index deceases with the increase in consolidation pressure. Likeness the e - log ${\sigma}\;_{\upsilon}\;'$ curves of the silts are not linear but are convex upwards. In this paper, conducted consolidation test with four undisturbed field soil and found that their e - log ${\sigma}\;_{\upsilon}\;'$ plots are not linear. And analyzed difference of settlement between computed value with compression index($C_c$) and computed value with improved compression index($\mathbb{C}$).

Strength evaluation of soft soils is a formidable task because of difficulties in sampling, specimen preparation and setting in triaxial cells. In undrained triaxial testing, sampling disturbance, verticality of specimen and bedding effect give a great influence on shear strength measurements. In the other hand, shear wave measurements of specimens are less influenced by these factors. In this research, the bender elements were attached top cap and base pedestal of triaxial cell and shear wave velocities were measured. To initiate a methodology to evaluate shear strength indirectly by measuring shear wave velocity, a relationship between shear strength and shear wave velocity was developed with kaolinite specimens consolidated in the laboratory. Undrained shear strength turns out to increase linearly with shear wave velocity. Stress-strain curves can also be predicted with a hyperbolic model and shear wave measurements.
