  • Hemorrhagic tendency observed in open heart surgery patients has been attributed, among other causes, to increased fibrinolytic activity during extracorporeal circulation. But the exact mechanism of enhanced fibrinolytic activity which occurs during extracorporeal circulation is still unknown. So, we studied and compared the changes of parameters of fibrinolytic and protein C system according to time obtained from the plasma of 31 adult open heart surgery patients[EGG group] and 10 adult general thoracic surgery patients[control group], in order to confirm the hypothesis that the activated protein C system might affect the fibrinolytic system during extracorporeal circulation. In ECC group, the nature of the enhanced fibrinolytic activity that evolved during extracorporeal circulation was characterized by significant increase in fibrin degradation products[P < 0.01] and significant decrease in plasminogen and alpha2-antiplasmin[P < 0.05, P < 0.01] in spite of adequate amount of heparin administration. These changes were most pronounced in the early phase of extracorporeal circulation and normalized after termination of extracorporeal circulation. The results of these observations were the same after volume correction with the value of hematocrit. The change of volume corrected protein C ratio during extracorporeal circulation revealed similar pattern to those of plasminogen and alpha2-antiplasmin [P < 0.01], but volume corrected ratio of free protein S showed significant increase after the commencement of extracorporeal circulation then decreased after extracorporeal circulation. Although the above mentioned changes occur similarly in both bubble type oxygenator-used and membrane oxygenator-used patients groups, but the degree of decrease was more severe in membrane oxygenator-used patients group [P < 0.01] and showed much slower recovery to reach to the preextracorporeal circulation level. These results confirm the hypothesis that the enhanced fibrinolysis during extracorporeal circulation might be caused by the activation of protein C system and the activation is possibly linked to the appearance of thrombin from contact activation of blood after wide exposure to the synthetic surfaces of extracorporeal circuit. Key words: Extracorporeal circulation, Enhanced fibrinolysis, Protein C system.

  • A non-stationary multivariate model is selected in which the mean and variance of rainfall are not temporally or spatially constant. And the rainfall prediction system is constructed which uses the recursive estimation algorithm, Kalman filter, to estimate system states and parameters of rainfall model simulataneously. The on-line, real-time, multivariate short-term, rainfall prediction for multi-stations and lead-times is carried out through the estimation of non-stationary mean and variance by the storm counter method, the normalized residual covariance and rainfall speed. The results of rainfall prediction system model agree with those generated by non-stationary multivariate model. The longer the lead time is, the larger the root mean square error becomes and the further the model efficiency decreases form 1. Thus, the accuracy of the rainfall prediction decreases as the lead time gets longer. Also it shows that the mean obtained by storm counter method constitutes the most significant part of the rainfall structure.

  • It has been suggested that green juice supplementation may have some health promoting benefits. We evaluated the effects of green juice (Angelica keiskei) consumption on parameters of lipid profiles and plasma antioxidant status in healthy male smokers. Fifty-four smokers were supplemented with 300 ml of green juice for 6 weeks while maintaining their normal diet. Blood samples were collected on week 0 and week 6 in order to evaluate plasma lipid profiles (total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol) , plasma antioxidant vitamin levels (ascorbic acid, $\alpha$ -tocopherol, ${\gamma}$ -tocopherol, $\alpha$ -carotene, $\beta$ -carotene, cryptoxanthin and lycopene) , the degree of LDL oxidation and GOT, GPT levels for liver function. Plasma ascorbic acid level remained at the same level. However, $\alpha$ -tocopherol and ${\gamma}$ -tocopherol normalized by total cholesterol (p <0.05) and $\beta$ -carotene (p <0.001) level were all significantly increased after green juice supplementation. Plasma cholesterol was reduced for 12%, LDL-cholesterol was reduced for 9.3% after green juice consumption, while plasma triglyceride and HDL-cholesterol was not changed. Oxidized LDL assessed by conjugated diene (CD) , was decreased (p < 0.0001) after green juice consumption. These results further support a role for green juice supplementation in the improvement of lipid status, prevention of lipid peroxidation, and thereby reducing risk factors of numerous diseases associated with elevated oxidative stress in smokers.

  • This paper proposes a novel approach to represent the image by using shape descriptor having an information of area. The proposed descriptor is a set of vectors, consists of radius, area and direction parameters in the concentrated center point. Due to the area parameter, we know our descriptor can obtain the information of area. Also, we give an extended shape descriptor to get more detailed representation. To do this, we move the center point of our vision to that point for region of interest. By doing so about all of region of interest, we can get our descriptor for detailed information of the image. From more detailed descriptor, it's natural that it's more efficient fur representation, retrievals and so on. We make it the normalized pattern and expand to improve its quality. The proposed method is invariant to scale, position and rotation. The results show that it can be used efficiently for image representation as we can see in retrievals of silhouette images.

  • Facial expression, which changes face geometry, usually has an adverse effect on the performance of a face recognition system. To improve the face recognition rate, we propose a normalization method of facial expression to diminish the difference of facial expression between probe and gallery faces. Two approaches are used to facial expression modeling and normalization from single still images using a generic facial muscle model without the need of large image databases. The first approach estimates the geometry parameters of linear muscle models to obtain a biologically inspired model of the facial expression which may be changed intuitively afterwards. The second approach uses RBF(Radial Basis Function) based interpolation and warping to normalize the facial muscle model as unexpressed face according to the given expression. As a preprocessing stage for face recognition, these approach could achieve significantly higher recognition rates than in the un-normalized case based on the eigenface approach, local binary patterns and a grey-scale correlation measure.

  • Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) became popular platforms for the collection of remotely sensed data in the last years. This study deals with the monitoring of multi-temporal onion growth with very high resolution by means of low-cost equipment. The concept of the monitoring was estimation of multi-temporal onion growth using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and meteorological factors. For this study, UAV imagery was taken on the Changnyeong, Hapcheon and Muan regions eight times from early February to late June during the onion growing season. In precision agriculture frequent remote sensing on such scales during the vegetation period provided important spatial information on the crop status. Meanwhile, four plant growth parameters, plant height (P.H.), leaf number (L.N.), plant diameter (P.D.) and fresh weight (F.W.) were measured for about three hundred plants (twenty plants per plot) for each field campaign. Three meteorological factors included average temperature, rainfall and irradiation over an entire onion growth period. The multiple linear regression models were suggested by using stepwise regression in the extraction of independent variables. As a result, $NDVI_{UAV}$ and rainfall in the model explain 88% and 68% of the P.H. and F.W. with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 7.29 cm and 59.47 g, respectively. And $NDVI_{UAV}$ in the model explain 43% of the L.N. with a RMSE of 0.96. These lead to the result that the characteristics of variations in onion growth according to $NDVI_{UAV}$ and other meteorological factors were well reflected in the model.

  • Although the previous researches evaluated the fatigue behavior of Al/GFRP laminates using the traditional fracture mechanism, their researches were not sufficient to do it : the damage zone of Al/GFRP laminates was occurred at the delamination zone instead of the crack-metallic damages. Thus, previous researches were not applicable to the fatigue behavior of Al/GFRP laminates. The major purpose of this study was to evaluate delamination behavior using the relationship between crack length (a) and delamination width (b) in Al/GFRP laminate. The details of investigation were as follows: 1) Relationship between the crack length (a) and the delamination width (b), 2) Relationship between the delamination aspect ratio (b/a) and the delamination area rate ((A$\_$D/)/subN// (A$\_$D/)$\_$All/), 3) The effect of delamination aspect ratio (b/a) on the delamination shape factor (f$\_$s/) and the delamination growth rate (dA$\_$D// da). As results, it was known that the delamination aspect ratio (b/a) was decreased and the delamination area rate ((A$\_$D/)$\_$N// (A$\_$D/)$\_$All/) was increased as the normalized crack size (a/W) was increased. And, the delamination shape factors (f$\_$s/) of the ellipse-II(f$\_$s3/) was greater than of the ellipse-I(f$\_$s2/) but that of the triangle (f$\_$s1/) was less than of the ellipse-I(f$\_$s2/).

  • This paper investigates the nonlinear analysis of concrete-filled steel composite columns subjected to axial loading to predict the ultimate load capacity and behaviour of the columns. Finite element software LUSAS is used to conduct the nonlinear analyses. The accuracy of the finite element modelling is verified by comparing the result with the corresponding experimental result reported by other researchers. Nonlinear analyses are done to study and develop different shapes and number of cold-formed steel sheeting stiffeners with various thicknesses of cold-formed steel sheets. Effects of the parameters on the ultimate axial load capacity and ductility of the concrete-filled steel composite columns are examined. Effects of variables such as concrete compressive strength $f_c$ and cold-formed steel sheet yield stress $f_{yp}$ on the ultimate axial load capacity of the columns are also investigated. The results are shown in the form of axial load-normalized axial shortening plots. It is concluded from the study that the ultimate axial load capacity and behaviour of the concrete-filled steel composite columns can be accurately predicted by the proposed finite element modelling. Results in this study demonstrate that the ultimate axial load capacity and ductility of the columns are affected with various thicknesses of steel sheets and different shapes and number of stiffeners. Also, compressive strength $f_c$ of the concrete and yield stress $f_{yp}$ of the cold-formed steel sheet influence the performance of the columns significantly.

  • Up to the present time, many methods to estimate emissions from a particular diesel engines have wholly depended on the quantity of diesel fuel consumed. Then, the recommended emission factors were normalized by fuel consumption, and further total activity was estimated by the total fuel consumed. One of main purposes in the study is newly to develop emission factors for the railroad diesel rolling stock (RDRS) and to estimate a total amount of major gaseous pollutants from the RDRS in Korea. Prior to develop a Korean mode emission factor. the emission factor from the USEPA was simply applied for comparative studies. When applying the USEPA emission factors, total exhaust emissions from the RDRS in Korea were estimated by 28,117tons of NOx, 2,832.3tons of CO, and 1,237.5tons of HC, etc in 2001. In this study, a emission factor for the RDRS, so called the KoRail mode (the Korean Railroad mode) has been developed on the basis of analyzing the driving pattern of the Gyeongbu-Line especially for the line-haul mode. Explicitly to make the site specific emission factors, many uncertainty problems concerning weighting factors for each power mode, limited emission test, incomplete data for RDRS, and other important input parameters were extensively examined. Total exhaust emissions by KoRail mode in Korea were estimated by 10,960tons of NOx, and 4,622tons of CO, and so on in the year of 2001. The emissions estimated by the USEPA mode were 2.6 times higher for NOx, and 1.6 times lower for CO than those by the KoRail mode. As a conclusion, based on the emission calculated from both the USEPA mode and the KoRail mode, the RDRS is considered as one of the significant mobile sources for major gaseous pollutants and thus management plans an(1 control strategies for the RDRS must be established to improve air quality near future in Korea.

  • In this paper, a performance evaluation model of the Multistage Interconnection Network(MIN) with the multiple-buffered crossbar switches under Hot-spot environment is proposed and examined. Buffered switch technique is well known to solve the data collision problem of the MIN. The proposed evaluation model is developed by investigating the transfer patterns of data packets in a switch. The performance of the multiple-buffered $a{\times}a$ crossbar switch is analyzed. Steady state probability concept is used to simplify the analyzing processes. Two important parameters of the network performance, throughput and delay, are then evaluated. To validate the proposed analysis model, the simulation is carried out on a Baseline network that uses the multiple buffered crossbar switches. Less than 2% differences between analysis and simulation results are observed. It is also shown that the network performance is significantly improved when the small number of buffer spaces is given. However, the throughput elevation is getting reduced and network delay becomes increasing as more buffer spaces are added in a switch.
