BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Centella asiatica, also known as Gotu kola, is a tropical medicinal plant native to Madagascar, Southeast Asia, and South Africa. It is well known to have biological activities, including wound healing, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, cytotoxic, and antioxidant effects. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of extracts of C. asiatica against age-related eye degeneration and to examine their physiological activities. MATERIALS/METHODS: To determine the effects of CA-HE50 (C. asiatica 50% EtOH extract) on retinal pigment cells, we assessed the cytotoxicity of CoCl₂ and oxidized-A2E in ARPE-19 cells and observed the protective effects of CA-HE50 against N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU)-induced retinal damage in C57BL/6 mice. In particular, we measured factors related to apoptosis and anti-oxidation and the protein levels of rhodopsin/opsin. We also measured glucose uptake to characterize glucose metabolism, a major factor in cell protection. RESULTS: Induction of cytotoxicity with CoCl₂ and oxidized-A2E inhibited decreases in the viability of ARPE-19 cells when CA-HE50 was administered, and promoted glucose uptake under normal conditions (P < 0.05). In addition, CA-HE50 inhibited degeneration/apoptosis of the retina in the context of MNU-induced toxicity (P < 0.05). In particular, CA-HE50 at 200 mg/kg inhibited the cleavage of pro-caspase-3 and pro-poly (ADP-ribose)-polymerase and maintained the expressions of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 and heme oxygenase-1 similar to normal control levels. Rhodopsin/opsin expression was maintained at a higher level than in normal controls. CONCLUSION: A series of experiments confirmed that CA-HE50 was effective for inhibiting or preventing age-related eye damage/degeneration. Based on these results, we believe it is worthwhile to develop drugs or functional foods related to age-related eye degeneration using CA-HE50.

Therapeutic cancer is a long lasting and turbulent history accompany with the milestones in surgical intervention, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In the past decade, however, metastatic cancer still obstinately exists challenging the professional scientist. Beside the major forms of cancer treatment, Diphtheria toxin (DT) which is produced by a pathogenic strain of bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheria to shield themselves against the other dangerous organism, have been researched as a potential candidate to overcome the drawback such as non-specific, non-effect to drug resistant cancer cell and side effects when using chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In the context of suicide gene therapy, the DT expression under controlling of tissue-specific promoter will be targeted in cancer cell but defect in normal cell. The molecular mechanism, characteristic of DT-bases therapy and prominent achievements of preclinical and clinical studies for the past decade are summarized and discussed in this review.

The present paper aims to study the influence of the magnetic field and initial stress on the 2-D problem of generalized thermo-viscoelastic material with voids subject to thermal loading by a laser pulse in the context of the Lord-Shulman and the classical dynamical coupled theories. The analytical expressions for the physical quantities are obtained in the physical domain by using the normal mode analysis. These expressions are calculated numerically for a specific material and explained graphically. Comparisons are made with the results predicted by the Lord-Shulman and the coupled theories in the presence and absence of the initial stress and the magnetic field.

This paper deals with the problems of English listening comprehension: the rate of understanding difference in positions and sentence structures, parts of speech easily missed to understand, English sounds only in English(not in Korean), confusion of sounds, unaccented prefixes and suffixes, polysemy, homonym, juncture, understanding as one word by two different words, and sound blending in a normal speed of connected speech. Bearing those in mind I taught Suwon University freshmen video English with the mixed idea of Peterson's bottom-up and top-down methods putting in a meaningful context with thought group rather than word to word understanding. As a consequence, their errors come: prepositions, conjunctions, unstressed prefixes and suffixes, -ing from the present progressives and so forth. Assignments to have students transcribe the TV commercials and the names of reporters or Korean related news from English broadcastings are of use and help.

In this Kdynote address, two types of information granules are considered : (ⅰ) one for set assignments of a concept descriptor and (ⅱ) the other for truthood assignment to the concept description verifier. The first is, the process which specifies the assignment of an object to a clump, a class, a group, etc., and hence defines the set membership with a relational constraint. the second is the assignment of the degree of truthood or the membership specification of the abstract concept of truthood which specifies the " veristic" constraint associated with the concept descriptor. The combination of these two distinct assignments let us generate four set and logic theories. This then leads to the concern of normal forms and their derivation from truth tables for each of these theories. In this regard, some of the fundamental issues arising in this context are discussed and certain preliminary answers are provided in order to highlight the consequences of these theories.

This paper was written to present the recent trend of juvenile delinquency within the context of family system and to provide the role and tasks of Family Science in the area of Probation and Parole System in Korea. Since Family Science provides knowledges and skills to help for both adolescents and their families by improving interactional functions, the role of Family Science was focusing more on comprehensive and integrated perspectives. The tasks of Family Science, especially, in family life education, family therapy, and family policy, were as follows: 1) to prevent recurrence of misbehavior by family life education. 2) to draw the cooperation with the judicial system. 3) to provide the advanced course for volunteers. 4) to perform crime prevention education for normal adolescents. 5) to join the official education for civil service personnel. 6) to manage group-homes after the completion of the probation period.

Purpose - Foreign exchange risk control is in an important component in the international supply chain management. This study shows the importance of the reference period in forecasting future exchange rates with a specific illustration of KIKO currency option contracts, and suggests feasible preventive measures. Research design, data, and methodology - Using monthly Won-Dollar exchange rate data for January 1995~July 2007, I evaluate the statistical characteristics of the exchange rate for two sub-periods; 1) a shorter period after the East Asian financial crisis and 2) a longer period including the financial crisis. The key instrument of analysis is the basic normal distribution theory. Results - The difference in the reference period could lead to an unexpected development in contract implementation and a consequent financial loss. We may avoid foreign exchange loss by using derivatives such as forwards or currency options. Conclusions - We should consider not only level values but also the volatilities of financial variables in making a binding financial contract. Appropriate measures may differ depending on the specific supply chain pattern. We may extend the study with surveys on actual risk measures.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the meaning and nature of the lived experience of women with severe dysmenorrhea. Methods: Hermeneutic phenomenology by van Mannen and feminist philosophy informed this study involving 20 women who were 10~40 years old. Data was collected by using focus group interview 2 times from 10 women and in-depth interview from other 10 women from September to December, 2010. Results: The essential themes were message from body, deconstruction of negative stereotyped body, and authorship of my body. Participants described their own painful experiences. They recognized that psychological stress impacted on severe dysmenorrhea, so they made self caring time. They had positive attitude to menstruation, said that dysmenorrhea was not illness, but normal life process. They had internal strength, wisdom, and sistership. Conclusion: This study revealed meaning of pain experience in sociocultural context. This finding have implications for health care provider's empathic and holistic practice.

Fire hazard and risk analysis at Nuclear Power Plants is implemented on the basis of the normal operational configuration. This steady configuration, however, can be changed due to the temporary displacement of equipment, electric cable and irregular movement of workers through the fire compartments when the on-line maintenance is processed during the power operation mode or the scheduled outage mode for the refueling. With the consequence of this configuration change, the fire analysis condition and the evaluation result will be different from those that were analyzed based on the steady configuration. In this context, at this paper, the general items for the reassessment are categorized when the configuration has changed. The contemporary zone models for the detail fire analysis are also illustrated for their application for each classified condition.

The interaction of monochromatic incident waves with a submerged horizontal porous membrane is investigated in the context of two-dimensional linear hydro-elastic theory. It is assumed that the membrane is made of material with very fine pores so that the normal velocity of the fluid passing through the porous membrane is linearly proportional to the pressure difference between two sides of the membrane (e.g. Darcy's law). Using the Eigen-function expansion method, the wave-blocking performance of a submerged horizontal porous membrane is tested with various membrane tensions, porosities, lengths, and submerged depths. It is found that an optimal combination of design parameters exists for given water depth and wave characteristics.
