An analytical solution of the fully coupled system of equations governing the plane strain deformation of a poroelastic medium with anisotropic permeability and compressible fluid and solid constituents is obtained. This solution is used to study the consolidation of a poroelastic clay layer with free permeable surface resting on a rough-rigid permeable or impermeable base. The stresses and the pore pressure are taken as the basic state variables. Displacements are obtained by integrating the coupled constitutive relations. The case of normal surface loading is discussed in detail. The solution is obtained in the Laplace-Fourier domain. Two integrations are required to obtain the solution in the space-time domain which are evaluated numerically for normal strip loading. Consolidation of the clay layer and diffusion of pore pressure is studied for both the bases. It is found that the time settlement is accelerated by the permeability of the base. Initially, the pore pressure is not affected by the permeability of the base, but has a significant effect, as we move towards the bottom of the layer. Also, anisotropy in permeability and compressibilities of constituents of the poroelastic medium have a significant effect on the consolidation of the clay layer.
In this paper, we will analyse the thermo-elastic behavior of the plate element of a structure arranged in a climatically aggressive environment (extreme temperature), we use a refined four-variable thick plate theory to take the shear effect into consideration, the proposed theory less computationally expensive and more accurate so that it incorporates the shear effect into the formulation. The plate is assumed to be simply supported on its four edges, so exact (closed-form) solutions are found according to the Navier expansion, and the governing stability equations and associated boundary conditions of the problem are obtained via the virtual works principle. The plate studied ismade of laminated composite materials, so a parametric study is needed to see the effect of different types of parameters and coupling on the critical temperature value causing thermo-elastic instability of the plate and also on the natural frequency of free vibration, as well as for other parameters such as anisotropy, slenderness and aspect ratio of the plate and finally the lamination angle. Numerical results are obtained for specially orthotropic and antisymmetrical plates and are compared with those obtained by othertheoriesin the literature to validate the analysis approach used.

The present study focuses on the effect of extension-bending coupling on the elastic stability (buckling) of laminated composite plates. These plates will be loaded under uni-axial or bi-axial in-plane mechanical loads, especially in the orthotropic or anti-symmetric cross-angle cases. The main objective is to find a limit where we can approximate the elastic stability behavior of angularly crossed anti-symmetric plates by the simple behavior of specially orthotropic plates. The contribution of my present study is to predict the explicit effect of extension-flexion coupling on the elastic stability of this type of panel. Critically, a parametric study is carried out, involving the search for the critical buckling load as a function of deformation mode, aspect ratio, plate anisotropy ratio and finally the study of the effect of lamination angle and number of layers on the contribution of extension-flexure coupling in terms of plate buckling stability. We use first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) with a correction factor of 5/6. Simply supported conditions along the four boundaries are adopted where we can develop closed-form analytical solutions obtained by a Navier development.

The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of ex vivo MR diffusion tensor imaging technique in order to observe the diffusion-contrast characteristics of human gastric tissues. On normal and pathologic gastric tissues, which have been fixed in a polycarbonate plastic tube filled with 10% formalin solution, laboratory made 3D diffusion tensor Turbo FLASH pulse sequence was used to obtain high resolution MR images with voxel size of $0.5{\times}0.5{\times}0.5mm^3\;using\;64{\times}32{\times}32mm^3$ field of view in conjunction with an acquisition matrix of $128{\times}64{\times}64$. Diffusion weighted- gradient pulses were employed with b values of 0 and $600s/mm^2$ in 6 orientations. The sequence was implemented on a clinical 3.0-T MRI scanner(Siemens, Erlangen, Germany) with a home-made quadrature-typed birdcage Tx/Rx rf coil for small specimen. Diffusion tensor values in each pixel were calculated using linear algebra and singular value decomposition(SVD) algorithm. Apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC) and fractional anisotropy(FA) map were also obtained from diffusion tensor data to compare pixel intensities between normal and abnormal gastric tissues. The processing software was developed by authors using Visual C++(Microsoft, WA, U.S.A.) and mathematical/statistical library of GNUwin32(Free Software Foundation). This study shows that 3D diffusion tensor Turbo FLASH sequence is useful to resolve fine micro-structures of gastric tissue and both ADC and FA values in normal gastric tissue are higher than those in abnormal tissue. Authors expect that this study also represents another possibility of gastric carcinoma detection by visualizing diffusion characteristics of proton spins in the gastric tissues.
Purpose: In general, confabulation is defined as confusion of reality with past events without apparent prompting, in association with disruption of the capacity for retrieval and encoding of memory. We report on a patient who showed spontaneous confabulation associated with injury of the Papez circuit following middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction. Methods: A 67-year-old female patient suffered cerebral infarct resulting from spontaneous MCA territory. After onset of the MCA infarct, she showed severe memory impairment and provoked confabulation. The Papez circuit was reconstructed for evaluation of part of it using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT). Fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), and tract volume were measured. Results: The right thalamocingulate tract showed a significant decrement of FA value and tract volume, and an increment of MD value by more than two standard deviations of that of normal control subjects. The tract volume in the left fornix and mammillothalamic tract decreased by more than two standard deviations of that of normal control subjects. Conclusion: Injuries of the Papez circuit were demonstrated in a patient who showed severe memory impairment and provoked confabulation following MCA infarct. We believe that analysis of the Papez circuit tract using DTT is useful in elucidating the cause of provoked confabulation in patients with MCA infarct.
At present the most popular turbulence models used for engineering solutions to flow problems are the $k-{\varepsilon}$ and Reynolds stress models. The shortcoming of these models based on the isotropic eddy viscosity concept and Reynolds averaging in flow fields of the type found in the field of Wind Engineering are well documented. In view of these shortcomings this paper presents the implementation of a non-linear model and its evaluation for flow around a building. Tests were undertaken using the classical bluff body shape, a surface mounted cube, with orientations both normal and skewed at $45^{\circ}$ to the incident wind. Full-scale investigations have been undertaken at the Silsoe Research Institute with a 6 m surface mounted cube and a fetch of roughness height equal to 0.01 m. All tests were originally undertaken for a number of turbulence models including the standard, RNG and MMK $k-{\varepsilon}$ models and the differential stress model. The sensitivity of the CFD results to a number of solver parameters was tested. The accuracy of the turbulence model used was deduced by comparison to the full-scale predicted roof and wake recirculation zone lengths. Mean values of the predicted pressure coefficients were used to further validate the turbulence models. Preliminary comparisons have also been made with available published experimental and large eddy simulation data. Initial investigations suggested that a suitable turbulence model should be able to model the anisotropy of turbulent flow such as the Reynolds stress model whilst maintaining the ease of use and computational stability of the two equations models. Therefore development work concentrated on non-linear quadratic and cubic expansions of the Boussinesq eddy viscosity assumption. Comparisons of these with models based on an isotropic assumption are presented along with comparisons with measured data.

A magnetic device which enables the application of a strong and uniform magnetic field to thin film during sputtering was designed for controlling the magnetic anisotropy using a three dimensional finite element method, and the effects of the external magnetic field on the magnetic properties of sputtered thin films were investigated. Both the intensity and the uniformity of the magnetic flux density in the sputter zone (50 mm ${\times}$50 mm) was dependent on not only the shape and size of the magnet device but also the magnitude of stray fields from the magnet. For the magnet device in which the distance between two magnets or two pure iron bars was 80-90 mm, the magnetic flux density along the direction normal to the external magnetic field direction was minimum. The two row magnets increased the magnetic flux density and uniformity along the external magnetic field direction. An Fe thin film sputtered using the optimized magnet device showed a higher remanence ratio than that fabricated under no external magnetic field.

The spectral-domain methos has been applied to an analysis of a open microstrip line on a dielectrically biaxial anisotropic substrate which takes into account both weak and tight anisotropy effect, which are very important in high-requency applications such as optical modulator, MMIC, etc.. Numerical results of propagation characteristics are validated against the data previously published for special dielectrically weak anisotropic cases(sapphire, Epsilam-10) and New data are calculated for dielectrically tight anisotropic case(LiNb $O_{3}$). Data are for these anisotropic substrates presented to illustrate the effect of three different orientations of the principle dielectric axes. It can be derived from the calculated data in this paper that component of dielectric tensor(.epsilon.$_{vv}$ ) in y-axis which is normal to microstrip-laid plane is important factor in propagation characteristics.

In axisymmetric tube reducing process for thin sheet metal tubes, the reduction ration of diameter is an important factor in the process design. For very thin sheet metal tubes, tube reducing cannot be successfully employed due to wrinkling of the edge portion of a tube as well as due to buckling of its rest portion. In the present study, thin sheet metal tubes are subjected to internal pressure during the tube reducing process in order to increase the forming limits. Analysis is made for the sound flow deformation in nonsteady tube reducing considering the normal anisotropy. Experiments are carried out for brass tubes. The present study is shown to give an effective guide line in designing the tube reducing process for very thin-walled sheet metal tubes. Hpwever, it is suggested that an analysis for instability should be made to design the process more effectively.
Using X-ray crystallography powder diffraction, the quantitative representation method of preferred orientation of particles ill tablets was developed. Selected faces of a tablet. the upper surface and faces cut parallel and normal to the upper surface, were presented to an X-ray beam and X-ray diffraction patterns for these faces were measured. The effects of particle size. tableting pressure, and particle form on the preferred orientation were also investigated. It was also recognized that the degree of anisotropy in terms of capping tendency was influenced by the preferred orientation of particles in tablets.
