  • Nonlinear seal friction in pneumatic cylinders can impede the performance of pneumatic systems designed for high precision positioning with favorable high speed actuation. The behaviour of an elastomeric piston seals in high speed pneumatic cylinders is analyzed by nonlinear finite element analysis using ABAQUS. The contact pressures, stress and strain distributions and frictional forces of the squeeze type piston seal are simulated with variation of the seal radial installed interference, the operating pressures, friction coefficients and piston rod velocities. The nonlinear finite element model of the squeeze type piston seal is used to predict deformation of a seal, friction force and contact pressure distributions.

  • This study aims at numerically and experimentally investigating torsional guided wave mixing with weak material nonlinearity under acoustoelastic effect in tubular structures. The acoustoelastic effect on single central frequency guided wave propagation in structures has been well-established. However, the acoustoelastic on guided wave mixing has not been fully explored. This study employs a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model to simulate the effect of stress on guided wave mixing in tubular structures. The nonlinear strain energy function and theory of incremental deformation are implemented in the 3D FE model to simulate the guided wave mixing with weak material nonlinearity under acoustoelastic effect. Experiments are carried out to measure the nonlinear features, such as combinational harmonics and second harmonics in related to different levels of applied stresses. The experimental results are compared with the 3D FE simulation. The results show that the generation combinational harmonic at sum frequency provides valuable stress information for tubular structures, and also useful for damage diagnosis. The findings of this study provide physical insights into the effect of applied stresses on the combinational harmonic generation due to wave mixing. The results are important for applying the guided wave mixing for in-situ monitoring of structures, which are subjected to different levels of loadings under operational condition.

  • A rubber-like material model is generally characterized by hyperelasticity and formulated by a total stress-total strain relationship because the material shows nonlinear elastic behaviour under large deformation. In this study, a pressure potential obtained by a separately interpolated pressure is introduced to the non-linear finite element formulation incorporating with incompressible or almost incompressible condition of the material. The present formulation is somewhat different from the general formulation using the pressure computed in the displacement field. A non-linear finite element analysis program is developed for the plane strain and the axisymmetric contact problems of a rubber-like material. Various examples with rubber material are analyzed for its verification. The results about deformed shapes and stress distributions thought to be meaningful in comparison with a commercial program, MARC.

  • The estimation of surface settlement, ground behavior and tunnel displacement are the main factors in urban tunnel design with shallow depth and unconsolidated soil. On deformation analysis of shallow tunnel, it is important to identify possible deformation mechanism of shear bands developing from tunnel shoulder to the ground surface. This paper investigated the effects of key design parameter affecting deformation behavior by numerical analysis using nonlinear model incorporating the reduction of shear stiffness and strength parameters with the increment of the maximum shear strain after the initiation of plastic yielding. Numerical parametric studies are carried out to consider the reduction of shear stiffness and strength parameters, horizontal stress ratio, cohesion and shotcrete thickness.

  • The automotive and electronic industries have seriously considered the use of magnesium alloys because of their excellent properties such as strength to weight ratio, EMI shielding capability, etc. However, it is difficult to form magnesium alloys at room temperature because of the mechanical deformation related to twinning. Hence, magnesium alloys are normally formed at elevated temperatures. In this study, a temperature dependent constitutive model, the C-H/V model, for the magnesium alloy AZ31B sheet is proposed. A hardening law based on nonlinear kinematic and H/V(Hollomon/Voce) hardening model is used to properly characterize the Bauschinger effect and the stabilization of the flow stress. Material parameters were determined from a series of uni-axial cyclic experiments(C-T-C) with the temperature ranging between 150 and $250^{\circ}C$. The developed models are fit to experimental data and a comparison is made.

  • Membrane structures, a kind of lightweight soft structural system, are used for spatial structures. The material property of the membrane has strong axial stiffness, but little bending stiffness. Therefore membrane structures are unstable structures initially. These soft structures need to be introduced initial stresses first because of its initial unstable state, and it happens large deformation phenomenon. To find the structural shape after large deformation caused by initial stiffness introduced, we need the shape analysis considering geometric nonlinearity in structural design procedure In this study, we analyze the soft spatial structures by the NASS which is the program for nonlinear analysis. The analytic model is a roof membrane structures of Barrel Vault-Type. We have done the shape analysis and the stress-deformation analysis considering the orthotropic material, and then study the safety.

  • Deformation of the porous media has influence on performance of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The stress distributions and deformation of the porous media are major factors for safe and efficient operation in the PEMFC. In this paper, nonlinear contact analysis of air plate and porous media is performed under a working condition to predict the performance characteristics of the air plates. Two kinds of models are suggested for this study. The first porous media model has nonlinear material properties. The second model has nonlinear material properties with contact condition between porous media and air plate. The numerical analysis results of the two models are somewhat different. It is shown that the nonlinear contact analysis is required for the design study of the PEMFC.

  • In the mechanistic-empirical trackbed design of railways, the resilient modulus is the key input parameter. This study focused on the resilient modulus prediction model, which is the functions of mean effective principal stress and axial strain, for three types of railroad trackbed materials such as crushed stone, weathered soil, and crushed-rock soil mixture. The model is composed with the maximum Young's modulus and nonlinear values for higher strain in parallel with dynamic shear modulus. The maximum values is modeled by model parameters, $A_E$ and the power of mean effective principal stress, $n_E$. The nonlinear portion is represented by modified hyperbolic model, with the model parameters of reference strain, ${\varepsilon}_r$ and curvature coefficient, a. To assess the performance of the prediction models proposed herein, the elastic response of a test trackbed near PyeongTaek, Korea was evaluated using a 3-D nonlinear elastic computer program (GEOTRACK) and compared with measured elastic vertical displacement during the passages of freight and passenger trains. The material types of sub-ballasts are crushed stone and weathered granite soil, respectively. The calculated vertical displacements within the sub-ballasts are within the order of 0.6mm, and agree well with measured values with the reasonable margin. The prediction models are thus concluded to work properly in the preliminary investigation.

  • The power steering hose is a kind of high-pressure hose with reinforced braids in rubber material. It is usually manufactured through the swaging process. In this paper, the deformation characteristics of a power steering hose during the swaging process were analyzed using the nonlinear finite element method. The material properties were obtained on experiments, and the contact conditions were used in consideration of real manufacturing process. Investigations were focused on the stress and strain values of the hose and meta] components at the maximum jaw stroke and at the completion of the process. Especially, the results of inner rubber component were interpreted in detail, because of its important role in the hose efficiency.
