  • A robust control design procedure for a nuclear reactor has been developed and experimentally validated on the Penn State TRIGA research reactor. The utilization of the robust controller as a component of an autonomous control system is also demonstrated. Two methods of specifying a low order (fourth-order) nominal-plant model for a robust control design were evaluated: 1) by approximation based on the 'physics' of the process and 2) by an optimal Hankel approximation of a higher order plant model. The uncertainty between the nominal plant models and the higher order plant model is supplied as a specification to the ,u-synthesis robust control design procedure. Two methods of quantifying uncertainty were evaluated: 1) a combination of additive and multiplicative uncertainty and 2) multiplicative uncertainty alone. The conclusions are that the optimal Hankel approximation and a combination of additive and multiplicative uncertainty are the best approach to design robust control for this application. The results from nonlinear simulation testing and the physical experiments are consistent and thus help to confirm the correctness of the robust control design procedures and conclusions.

  • Since the superconductor type II with high critical current and high critical magnetic field was discovered in 1961, there were many studies on the superconducting coil for high field and highly homogeneous field. The graphical method and the numerical method by Newton Raphson technique have been studied as the method for design of homogeneous superconducting coil. It is comparatively easy to get a compensating coil for any given main coil by the above methods, but it is too laborious to get a general solution for main coil dimension. This paper studies the optimal design method for minimum volume of superconducting coil under certain central field and highly homogeneous field. The present method makes use of the nonlinear programming for optimization. The optimal solution of NMR superconducting coils by this method are demonstrated very well.

  • Methods to find an optimal solution that is the function of the design variables satisfying all constraints have been studied, there are still many difficulties to apply them to optimal design problems. A method to solve the above difficulties is developed by using Genetic Algorithms. but, several problems that conventional GAs are ill defined are application of penalty function that can be adapted to transform a constrained optimization problem into an unconstrained one and premature convergence of solution. Thus, we developed an modified GAs to solve this problems, and two examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology developed in this paper.

  • In this paper the comparison of the first order approximation schemes such as SLP(sequential linear programming) CONLIN(convex linearization) MMA(method of moving asymptotes) and the second order approximation scheme SQP(sequential quadratic programming) was accomplished for optimization of nonlinear structures. It was found that MMA and SQP are the most efficient methods for optimization. But the number of function call of SQP is much more than that of MMA. Therefore when it is considered with the expense of computation MMA is more efficient than SQP. In order to examine the efficiency of MMA for complex optimization problem it was applied to the helicopter tail boom con-sidering column buckling and local wall buckling constraints. it is concluded that MMA can be a very efficient approxima-tion scheme from simple problems to complex problems.

  • The unbalanced heavy-loaded elevation-drive system is composed of a hydraulic cylinder, a driving link-mechanism and an equilibrating-mechanism which compensate the static unbalanced moment of the elevation load. The Compensator for the unbalanced moment is composed of a hydrau-pneumatic accumulator and a hydraulic cylinder which act with the elevation cylinder together. Compensation of the variable static-unbalanced moment for the elevation-drive system is very difficult because these mechanisms imply highly nonlinear properties due to air conditioning characteristics and mechanical rotation of the link-mechanism. In this study, through the analysis of the already designed equilibrating-mechanism, the optimal design parameters of the equilibrating-mechanism is suggested.

  • The aircraft engine is usually supported by rolling element bearings and has a small damping rate, which is vol y sensitive to external force. The high-performance requirement of the rotors leads to complex assembly designs and are more flexible. Squeeze film dampers (SFDs) are introduced to provide damping while crossing the critical speeds and stability to the rotor s :stem. Hence, the focus of the present investigation is on the decision of an optimal size of the flexible rotor system supported by the squeeze film dampers to minimize the maximum transmitted load and unbalance response over a range operating speeds. The enhanced genetic algorithm (EGA), which was developed by authors, is used in the optimization process. This algorithm is based on the synthesis of a modified genetic algorithm and simplex method. The results show significant benefits in using EGA when compared with nonlinear programming (NLP).

  • This paper discussed an optimal designs of 2 pole fan motors in refrigerator using a Niching Algorithm. We applied a Niching method to multi-objective optimal design of air gap construct. This Niching genetic algorithm is called "Restricted Competition Selection"(RCS) that is suitable for real world problem such as shape or structural optimization of electromagnetic device. The finite element method being used for nonlinear numerical characteristic analysis is provided exact solution in the system. Through this process is reduced the cogging torque ripple in air gap.

  • An Independent Administrative Corporation Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is developing light-and-small Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV)$^{1)}$, named 'MR-X1' (Marine Robot Experimental 1), which can cruise, investigate and observe by itself without human's help. In this paper, we consider the motion control problem of 'MR-X1' and derive a controller. Since the dynamic property of 'MR-X1' is changed by the influence of the speed, the mathematical model of 'MR-X1' becomes the nonlinear model. In order to design a controller for 'MR-X1', we generally apply nonlinear control theories or linear control theories with some constant speed situation. If we design a controller by applying Linear Quadratic (LQ) optimal control theory, the obtained controller only compensates t e optimality at the designed speed situation, and does not compensate the stability at another speed situations. This paper proposes a controller design method using Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs)$^{2),3),4)}$, which can adapt the speed variation of 'MR-X1'. And examples of numerical analysis using our designed controller are shown.

  • While most AUV researches have concerned about single hydrofoil, practical AUV's are generally operated with multiple hydrofoils. Double hydrofoil study attempts to evaluate thrust and efficiency with various flapping motions, and carries out design optimization using parametric analysis. Flow patterns such as vortex shedding and wake-body interaction are carefully investigated during design variable sensitivity analysis. The purpose of this design optimization is to find out the optimal motion that yields maximum thrust and efficiency. The design optimization employes several techniques such as table of orthogonal arrays, Kriging method, ANOVA analysis and MGA. Throughout this research, it is possible to find the optimal values of heaving ratio, heaving shift and pitch shift: Heaving ratio 0.950, heaving shift $23.120^{\circ}$ and pitch shift $89.991^{\circ}$ are found to be optimal values in double hydrofoil motions. Thrust and efficiency are 16.7% and 35.1% higher than existing AUV that did not consider nonlinear dependency of motion parameters. This results may offer an effective framework that is applicable to various AUV motion analyses and designs.

  • In this paper, we carry out the simulation for an optimal solution of one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystal structure using Genetic algorithm, and show the proposed method to apply for photonic transistors. Unlike a conventional steepest descent method for an optimization, the proposed method based on Genetic Algorithm has advantages for finding out excellent solutions without any analytic forms, which can easily apply to other applications. Also, as several solutions around global minimum solution can be obtained, it is very good optimization tool to give us the patterns about the optimal structure of a photonic crystal transistor. To design an all-optical filter transistor, Neural network algorithm is firstly performed for an initial design and then Genetic Algorithm is finally used to get the optimal solution. From the simulation of one-dimensional photonic crystal transistor, 27dB of the switching On/Off ratio is obtained.
