The cantilever beam with nonlinearity has many dynamic characteristics of nonlinear vibration. Nonlinear terms of a flexible cantilever beam include inertia, spring, damping, and warping. When the beam is given basic harmonic excitation, it shows planar and nonplanar vibrations due to one-to-one resonance. And when the one-to-one resonance occurs, the flexible beam shows different behaviors in those vibrations. For the one-to-one resonance occurring in each mode, the phase value of the planar vibration is different from that of the nonlinear vibration. This paper investigates the phase change and the phase difference between such planar and nonplanar vibrations which are caused by one-to-one resonance.

The aerodynamic torque and power caused by the interaction between the wind and blade of wind turbine are highly nonlinear. For this reason, the overall dynamic behaviors of wind turbine have nonlinear characteristics. The aerodynamic nonlinearity also affects properties of torque control for wind turbine. In this paper, the nonlinear aerodynamic property according to the wind speed below rated power and its effects on the torque control system are investigated. Nonlinear parameter representing change of aerodynamic torque with respect to rotor speed is obtained by linearization technique. Effects of this aerodynamic nonlinear parameter on the closed-loop torque system with PI controller for an 1.5 MW wind turbine are presented.
The turbulent flow is of fundamental interest because the conservation equations for thermodynamics, mass and momentum are linked together. This turbulent flow consists of some coherent time- and space-organized vortical structures. Research has already shown that some dynamic systems and experimental models still cannot provide a good nonlinear analysis of turbulent time series. In the real turbulent flow, very complicated nonlinear behaviors, which are affected by many vague factors are present. In this paper, a kernel-based machine for fuzzy nonlinear regression analysis is proposed to predict the nonlinear time series of turbulent flows. In order to show the practicality and usefulness of this model, we present an example of predicting the near-wall turbulence time series as a verifiable model and compare with fuzzy piecewise regression. The results of practical applications show that the proposed method is appropriate and appears to be useful in nonlinear analysis and in fuzzy environments to predict the turbulence time series.
The present paper investigates the combination resonance behavior of imperfect spiral stiffened functionally graded (SSFG) cylindrical shells with internal and external functionally graded stiffeners under two-term large amplitude excitations. The structure is embedded within a generalized nonlinear viscoelastic foundation, which is composed of a two-parameter Winkler-Pasternak foundation augmented by a Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model with a nonlinear cubic stiffness, to account for the vibration hardening/softening phenomena and damping considerations. With regard to classical plate theory of shells, von-Kármán equation and Hook law, the relations of stress-strain are derived for shell and stiffeners. The spiral stiffeners of the cylindrical shell are modeled according to the smeared stiffener technique. According to the Galerkin method, the discretized motion equation is obtained. The combination resonance is obtained by using the multiple scales method. Finally, the influences of the stiffeners angles, foundation type, the nonlinear elastic foundation coefficients, material distribution, and excitation amplitude on the system resonances are investigated comprehensively.

This paper presents an optimum design of a rotor-bearing spindle system for a ultra centrifuge (80,000 RPM) supported by ball bearings with nonlinear stiffness characteristics. To obtain the nonlinear bearing stiffnesses, a ball bearing is modeled in five degrees of freedom and is analyzed quasi-statically. The dynamic behaviors of the nonlinear rotor-bearing system are analyzed by using a transfer-matrix method iteratively. For optimization. we use the cost function that simultaneously minimizes the weight of a rotor and maximizes the separation margins to yield the critical speeds as far from the operating speed as possible. Augmented Lagrange Multiplier (ALM) method is employed for the nonlinear optimization problem. The result shows that the rotor-bearing spindle system is optimized to obtain 9.5% weight reduction and 21% separation margin.

This paper describes the dynamical behavior of the bicycle and its nonlinear effect when magnetic repulsive forces are applied to the bicycle cushion system. A finite-element method was used to obtain its reliabilities by comparing the experimental and numerical values and select the proper magnet sizes. The Equivalent spring stiffness values were evaluated in terms of both linear and nonlinear approximations, where the nonlinear effect was specifically investigated for the ride comfort. The corresponding equations of linear and nonlinear motion were derived for the numerical model with three degrees of freedom. Dynamic behaviors were observed when the bicycle ran over a curvilinear road in the form of a sinusoidal curve. The analysis in this paper for the observed nonlinearity of magnetic repulsive forces will be a useful guide to more accurately predict the cushion design for any vehicle system.

A displacement-based finite element method Is presented for the geometrically nonlinear analysis of eccentrically stiffened plates. A nonlinear degenerated shell element and a nonlinear degenerated eccentric isoparametric beam (isobeam) element are formulated on the basis of Total Agrangian and Updated Lagrangian descriptions. In the formulation of the isobeam element, some additional local decrees of freedom are implementd to describe the stiffener's local plate buckling modes. Therefore this element can be effectively employed to model the eccentric stiffener with fewer D.O.F's than the case of a degenerated shell element. Some detailed buckling and nonlinear analyses of an eccentrically stiffened plate are performed to estimate the critical buckling loads and the post buckling behaviors including the local plate buckling of the stiffeners discretized with the degenerated shell elements and the isobeam elements. The critical buckling loads are found to be higher than the analytical plate buckling load but lower than Euler buckling load of the corresponding column, i.e, buckling strength requirements of the Classification Societies for the stiffened plates.

Based on the potential flow theory, a fully nonlinear numerical procedure is developed with boundary element method to analyze the interaction between a fixed semi-submersible platform and incident waves in open water. The incident wave is separated from the scattered wave under fully nonlinear boundary conditions. The mixed Euler-Lagrangian method is used to capture the position of the disturbed wave surface in local coordinate systems. The wave forces exerted on an inverted conical frustum are used to ensure the accuracy of the present method and good agreements with published results are obtained. The hydrodynamic characteristics of the semi-submersible platform interacting with regular waves are analyzed. Pressure distribution with time and space, tension and compression of the platform under wave action are investigated. 3D behaviors of wave run-ups are predicted. Strong nonlinear phenomena such as wave upwelling and wave interference are observed and analyzed.
Boundary condition is an important factor affecting the vibration characteristics of structures, under different boundary conditions, structures will exhibit different vibration behaviors. On the basis of the previous work, this paper extends to the nonlinear resonance behavior of axially moving graphene platelets reinforced metal foams (GPLRMF) plates with geometric imperfection under different boundary conditions. Based on nonlinear Kirchhoff plate theory, the motion equations are derived. Considering three boundary conditions, including four edges simply supported (SSSS), four edges clamped (CCCC), clamped-clamped-simply-simply (CCSS), the nonlinear ordinary differential equation system is obtained by Galerkin method, and then the equation system is solved to obtain the nonlinear ordinary differential control equation which only including transverse displacement. Subsequently, the resonance response of GPLRMF plates is obtained by perturbation method. Finally, the effects of different boundary conditions, material properties (including the GPLs patterns, foams distribution, porosity coefficient and GPLs weight fraction), geometric imperfection, and axial velocity on the resonance of GPLRMF plates are investigated.
