Full-Wave Analysis of Microwave Amplifiers with Nonlinear Device by the FDTD Algorithm

  • This paper presents the full wave analysis of microwave circuits with nonlinear device using the finite difference time domain method. The equivalent current source is used to model nonlinear device and all the electric field components at the nonlinear device are updated by FDTD algorithm. The currents and voltages of nonlinear device are calculated by the state equations and iteration method. To validate the proposed method, the S-parameters of NEC NE72089 MESFET in various conditions are analyzed and the results are compared with those of the ADS. The proposed method is applied to the analysis of a microwave amplifier, which includes NEC NE72089 MESFET. The analysis results obtained by the present method show good agreement with those of the ADS.

Prediction of Gain Expansion and Intermodulation Performance of Nonlinear Amplifiers

  • A mathematical model for the input-output characteristic of an amplifier exhibiting gain expansion and weak and strong nonlinearities is presented. The model, basically a Fourier-series function, can yield closed-form series expressions for the amplitudes of the output components resulting from multisinusoidal input signals to the amplifier. The special case of an equal-amplitude two-tone input signal is considered in detail. The results show that unless the input signal can drive the amplifier into its nonlinear region, no gain expansion or minimum intermodulation performance can be achieved. For sufficiently large input amplitudes that can drive the amplifier into its nonlinear region, gain expansion and minimum intermodulation performance can be achieved. The input amplitudes at which these phenomena are observed are strongly dependent on the amplifier characteristics.

  • 이동통신에서, 신호의 페이딩을 보상하기 위하여 pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM)에 대한 많은 연구가 진행 되어왔다. 본 논문에서는 최대비합성 다이버시티를 사용하는 PSA-QAM에서 전력증폭기 비선형성 의 효과를 분석하였다. 먼저, PSAM성능의 한계를 구하기 위하여, 페이딩에 대한 완벽한 정보가 주어진 상태에서 최대비합성 다이버시티를 갖는 QAM의 이론적 성능을 분석하였다. 실제 PSAM에서, 페이딩에 대한 정보는 파일럿 심볼의 보간에 의하여 얻어진다. 오차의 평균전력을 최소화하는 보간필터를 사용하여 필터의 탭수, 파일럿 심볼 프레임 주기, 도플러 주파수가 성능에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 비선형 전력증폭기 AB, B, C급 의 AM/AM, AM/PM 특성을 성능분석 에 고려하였다. 비선형 보상기술인 Cartesian Feedback Loop (CFB) 이용하여 AWGN 채널과 Rayleigh 페이딩 채널에서 비선형 전력증폭기 종류에 따른 성능변화를 나타내었다.

위성통신용 고출력 증폭기의 비선형성 보상을 위한 데이터 Predistorter의 설계 (A Design of a Data Predistorter for the Compensation of Nonlinearities in High Power Amplifiers for Satellite Communication)

  • 위성통신 채널에서 고출력 신호 발생을 위한 증폭기는 일반적으로 비선형성에 의한 왜곡이 존재하며, 이는 시스템의 성능을 크게 저하시킨다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 비선형 왜곡을 보상해 주기 위해 LMS 알고리듬을 이용한 새로운 데이타 predistortion 방법을 제안한다. 16-QAM 방식의 경우, constellation 각각의 심볼들에 predistorter를 개별적으로 달아 주어 처리했던 기존의 방식과는 달리, 같은 크기를 갖는 심볼들에 대해서는 동일 메모리를 사용하여 크기차와 위상차에 의해 고출력 증폭기의 입력을 사전왜곡 하므로써 적은 수의 디지탈 메모리(3개의 predistorter)와 빠른 수렴 속도를 갖는 보다 향상된 적응 데이터 predistorter를 제안하였다. 기존의 방법과 비교하므로써 본 논문에서 제안된 방법의 우수성을 보인다.

  • In this paper, an adaptive predistortion scheme is proposed to compensate nonlinear distortions caused by high power amplifiers (HPA) in OFDM systems. A complex Wiener-Hammerstein model (WHM) is used to describe input-output relationship of HPA with linear dynamics. The predistorter is directly identified by complex power series model with memory, which is an approximate inverse of the HPA expressed by the WHM. The effectiveness of the proposed adaptive compensation scheme is validated by numerical simulation for 64QAM-OFDM systems.

  • This paper describes the improvement in performance of power amplifiers by Defected Ground Structure (DGS) for several operating classes. Due to its excellent capability of harmonic rejection, DGS plays a threat role in improving the main performance of power amplifiers such as output power, power added efficiency, harmonic rejection, and intermodulation distortion (IMD3). In order to verify the improvement in performance of power amplifiers by DGS, measured data for a 30 Watts power amplifier with and without DGS attached under several operating classes are illustrated and compared. The principle of the performance improvement is described with simple Volterra nonlinear transfer functions. Also, the measured performance far two cases, i.e. with and without DGS, and the quantities of improvement fur the various operating classes are compared and discussed.

고출력 증폭기의 비선형 왜곡 특성에 강인한 Companding 기법 (A Robust Companding Scheme against Nonlinear Distortion of High Power Amplifiers)

  • 본 논문에서는 고출력 증폭기 (High Power Amplifier; HPA)의 비선형 특성에 관계없이 시스템의 비트오율 (Bit Error Rate; BER) 성능을 유지하면서 동시에 효율적으로 PAPR (Peak-to-Average Power Ratio)을 감소시킬 수 있는 CCP (Companding Combined with Predistorter) 기법을 제안한다. 제안된 CCP 기법은 기존에 본 저자들이 제안한 Companding 기법이 가지고 있는 Compression 특성과 HPA의 비선형 왜곡 특성에 의해 발생되는 전송 신호의 왜곡으로 인해 나타나는 시스템의 BER 성능 열화를 보완하기 위해 Predistorter를 기존의 Companding 기법에 결합하였다. 따라서, 제안된 CCP 기법은 HPA의 비선형 특성에 관계없이 효율적으로 PAPR을 감소시킬 수 있으며 동시에 시스템의 BER 성능도 유지시킬 수 있는 PAPR 감소 방식이라고 할 수 있다. 모의실험 결과, 제안된 CCP 기법은 TD (Total Degradation) 측면에서 Predistorter를 고려한 Clipping 기법과 Wang이 제안한 Companding 기법에 비해 모든 변조방식에서 가장 낮은 TD 성능을 나타내고 있음을 확인하였다.

  • In active noise control (ANC) systems, the convergence behavior of the conventional Filtered-X Least Mean Square (FXLMS) algorithm may be affected by nonlinear distortions in the secondary path (e.g., in the power amplifiers, loudspeakers, transducers, etc.), which may lead to degradation of the error-reduction performance of the ANC systems. In this paper, a stable FXLMS algorithm with fast convergence is proposed to compensate for undesirable nonlinear distortions in the secondary-path of ANC systems by employing the Volterra filtering approach. In particular, the proposed approach is based on the utilization of the conventional P-th order inverse approach to nonlinearity compensation in the secondary path of ANC systems. Finally, the simulation results showed that the proposed approach yields a better convergence behavior In the nonlinear ANC systems than the conventional FXLMS.

  • A new approach, using MEMS, for improving the performance of high efficiency amplifiers is proposed in this paper. The MEMS tuning element is described as a variable-length shorted CPW stub. Class-E amplifiers can be optimally tuned by these MEMS tuning elements because their operation varies with the impedance of the output tuning circuit. A MEMS tuning element was simulated using full-wave EM simulators to obtain its S-parameters. A Class-E amplifier with the MEMS was designed at 8GHz. The non-linear operation of this amplifier was simulated to explore the effect of the MEMS tuning. Comparing the initially designed amplifier without MEMS, the Power Added Efficiency (PAE) of the amplifier with MEMS is improved from 46.3% to 66.9%. For the amplifier with MEMS, the nonlinear simulation results are PAE = 66.90%, $\eta$(drain efficiency) = 75.89%, and $P_{out}$ = 23.37 dBm at 8 GHz. In this paper, the concept of the MEMS tuning element is successfully applied to the Class E amplifier designed with transmission lines.

고출력증폭기의 비선형성 보정을 위한 비선형 적응 Predistorter (A Nonlinear Adaptive Predistorter for the Compensation of Nonlinearities in High Power Amplifier)

  • The major reason that reduces the performance of satellite communication channels is known as the nonlinearities of high power amplifiers(HPA's) which are usually modeled by memoryless nonlinear systems, in the channels. This paper proposes a nonlinear adaptive predistorter,which predistorts the input symbols such that the symbol passing through the nonlinear HPA preserves the desired constellation, and derives the region of convergence for the predistorter. The predistorter has capability of coping adaptively with any time-varying environment such as changes of operating points if HPA since the coefficients of the predistorter which has a form of truncated Tayler series are obtained by recursive optimization procedure utilizing QAM data sequence directely. Simulation results show that the proposed one with 16 QAM input has better performance than the conventional fixed predistorter with the same input.
