  • In order to achieve the desired lightweight and robust design of a structure, it is preferable to design a structure and its control system, simultaneously, which is termed the combined optimal design. A constant-cross-sectional area cantilever beam was chosen as the optimum design method, An initial load and a time-varying disturbance were applied at the free end of the beam. Sliding mode control was selected, due to its insensitivity to the disturbance, compared with other modes. It is known that the sliding mode control is robust to the disturbance and is uncertain, only if a matching condition is met, after giving a switching hyper plane. In this study, the optimum method was used for the design of the switching hyper plane, and the objective function of the optimum switching hyper plane was assumed to be the objective of the control system. The total weight of the structure was treated as a constraint, and the cross sectional areas of the beam were considered as design variables, the result being a nonlinear programming problem. To solve it, the sequential linear programming method was applied. As a result of the optimum design, the effect of attenuating vibrations has been substantially improved. Moreover, the lightweight design of the structure became possible as a result of the relationship of the weight of the structure to the control objective function.

  • To achieve the lightweight and robust design of a structure, it is requested to design a structure and its control system simultaneously, which is called as the combined optimal design. A constant-cross-sectional area cantilever beam was chosen as an example for the applying the optimum design method. An initial load and a time varying disturbance were applied at the free end of the beam. Sliding mode control was selected due to its insensitiveness to the disturbance compared with other modes. It is known that the sliding mode control is robust to the disturbance and the uncertainty only if a matching condition is met, after giving a switching hyper plane. In this study, the optimum method was used for the design of the switching hyper plane and the objective function of the optimum switching hyper plane was assumed to be the objective one of the control system. The total weight of the structure was treated as a constraint and the cross sectional areas of the beam were considered as design variables, which means a nonlinear programming problem. The sequential linear programming method was applied to solve it. As a result of the optimum design, the effect of attenuating vibrations has been improved obviously. Moreover, lightweight design of the structure became possible from the relationship of the weight of the structure and the control objective function.

  • Static power converters can be analyzed by means of available circuit simulation software packages such as PSPICE. This paper proposes the macro models developing technique for three-phase power converters using the transfer function approach. Also, these models are based on converter switching functions rather than actual circuit configuration. In this approach, VSI(Voltage Source Inverter) and CSI(Current Source Inverter) are simulated as multiport networks avoiding nonlinear macromodels of the power switches.

  • An industrial robot needs a simple and robust control algorithm obtaining high precision control performance in spite of disturbance and parameter's change. In this paper, for solving this problem, a new sliding mode control algorithm is proposed and applied to the trajectory control of a SCARA type robot. The proposed algorithm has diminished the chattering occurring in sliding mode by setting a dead band along the switching line on the phase plane. It shows that we can easily obtain a simple switching control input satisfying sliding mode in spite of regarding nonlinear terms of a manipulator and servo system as disturbance. A guideline for selection of dead-band width is determined by optimal value of cost function presenting magnitudes of chattering and error. By this algorithm, we can expect the high performance of the trajectory tracking of an industrial robot which needs a robust and simple algorithm.

  • In this paper, the effects of filter parameters on a supercontinuum-based all-optical thresholder are experimentally investigated. By tuning the filter parameters, the power transfer function and power transmission function are tailored. The experimental results show that a thresholder with short center wavelength has a better power function, and the slope in the middle level of the thresholder increases with increasing bandwidth. Through tuning the filter parameters, the thresholder can achieve a steplike power transfer function for optical thresholding, and a steplike power transmission function for optical self-switching. This makes the supercontinuum-based thresholder more flexible, and allows customization of performance to meet different demands in various applications.

  • We propose and analyze a robust adaptive fuzzy controller for nonlinear systems without a priori knowledge of the sign of the input gain function. No assumptions are made about the type of nonlinearities of the system, except that such nonlinearities are smooth. The uncertain nonlinearities are captured by the fuzzy systems that have been proven to be universal approximators. The proposed control scheme completely overcomes the singularity problem that occurs in the indirect adaptive feedback linearizing control. Projection in the estimated parameters and switching in the control input are both not required. The stability of the closed-loop system is guaranteed in the Lyapunov viewpoint.

  • We study complicated nonlinear interactions of two orthogonally polarized pulses with pulse-width of less than 100fsec in the all-optical phase-shift switches, which use soliton pulse-train and fiber-splicing for control pulse to obtain multi-collisional $\pi$-phase-shift and consider Raman response function. We investigate switching performance in various input parameters such as input pulse-width and birefringence of fiber, and find optimum initial conditions for good switching performance in such all-optical switches.

  • A sliding mode control of spacecraft attitude tracking with actuator, especially reaction wheel, is presented. The sliding mode controller is derived based on quaternion parameterization for the kinematic equations of motion. The reaction wheel dynamic equations represented by wheel input voltage are presented. The input voltage to wheel is calculated from the sliding mode controller and reaction wheel dynamics. The global asymptotic stability is shown using a Lyapunov analysis. In addition the robustness analysis is performed for nonlinear system with parameter variations and disturbances. It is shown that the controller ensures control objectives for the spacecraft with reaction wheels.
