An airship is statically unstable, because it has no wing, comparatively small tail and large hull. Hence, an accurate prediction of dynamic stability is critical. In this study, dynamic stability data of the Mid-Size Airship is acquired through forced oscillation wind tests. The test was done in BAR LAMP which is Birhle Applied Research Inc's facility located in Germany. The test was composed with 16 static runs and 26 dynamic runs. As a result, dynamic characteristics of the airship depends on sideslip angle, angular rate and its direction as well as angle of attack. Generally, it is obtained that 3 directional moments have damping, but normal force, side force, and cross-derivatives are unstable. The dynamic derivatives are not sensitive to control surfaces, but have nonlinear dependency on sideslip angle.
In order to analyze the effects of ground vibration caused by underground blasting having an effect on structure, the particle velocity and acceleration are calculated by using DYNPAK program. The DYNPAK program analyzes nonlinear transient dynamic problem and adopts the very popular and easily implemented, explicit, central difference scheme. In this program, the material behavior is assumed to be elasto-viscoplastic. Using the particle acceleration history, modal analysis method is applied to the forced vibration response of multiple-degree-of-freedom(MDOF) systems using unclupled equations of motion expressed in terms of the system's natural circular frequencies and modal damping factors. AS a means of evaluating the vibration behavior of building structure subjected to underground blasting, the time response of the displacements relative to the ground of five-story building is determined. It is concluded that the amount of explosives consumed per round, the location of structure, the properties of rock medium, the stiffness fo structure, etc. act on the important factors influencing on the safety of building and that the response of a structure subjected to a forced excitation can usually be obtained with reasonable accuracy by the modal analysis of only a few mode of the lower frequencies of the system.

This paper proposes a hybrid control method of using impedance control and the computed-torque control for biped robot locomotion. Computed torque control is used for supporting (constrained) leg. For the free leg, the impedance control is used, where different values of impedance parameters are used depending on the gait phase of the biped robot. To reduce the magnitude of an impact and guarantee a stable footing when a foot contacts with the ground, this paper proposes to increase the damping of the leg drastically and to modify the reference trajectory of the leg. Computer simulations with a 3 -dof environment model for which a combination of a nonlinear and a linear compliant models is used, show that the proposed controller is superior to the computed-torque controllers in reducing impacts and stabilizing the footing.

A linearized model for hysteretic acoustic nonlinearity of imperfectly joined interface is proposed and analyzed by using Coulomb damping to investigate the characteristics of the reflection and transmission coefficients for harmonic waves at the contact interface. Closed crack is modeled as non welded interface that has nonlinear discontinuity condition in displacement across its boundary. Based on the hysteretic contact stiffness of the contact interface, the reflected and transmitted waves are determined by deriving the tractions on both sides of the interface in terms of the discontinuous displacements across the interface. It is found that the amplitudes of the reflected and transmitted waves are dependent on the frequency and the hysteretic stiffness. As the frequency of the incident wave increases, the higher reflection and lower transmission are obtained. It also shows that the hysteresis of the interface increases the reflection coefficient, but reduces the transmission coefficient. A fatigue crack is also made in aluminum specimen to demonstrate these characteristics of the reflection and transmission of contact interfaces.

In this paper, the research results for the improvement of tracking performance of a hydraulic shaking table are presented. A servo-hydraulic shaking table is not only highly nonlinear but also has a lot of time delay. In addition, the shaking table, which consists of multi axial hydraulic actuators, is a MIMO system coupled by kinematics and dynamics of each other's actuators. And it is demanded for the shaking table to track arbitrary trajectories up to high frequency even at the extreme situations such as substantial external loads and large disturbances. For this purpose, an iterative feed-forward control based on the inverse of a measured frequency response function is used for the shaking table. To solve the dynamic coupling, a pressure feedback control as numerical damping is used. It is shown through numerical simulations that the tracking performance of shaking table is improved up to 100Hz.

A simulation of failures on responsible elements is only one form of the extreme structural behavior analysis. By understanding the dynamic behavior in incidental situations, it is possible to make a special structural design from the point of the largest axial force, stress and redundancy. The numerical realization of one such simulation analysis was performed using FEM in this paper. The boundary parameters of transient analysis, such as overall structural damping coefficient, load accelerations, time of load fall and internal forces in the responsible structural elements, were determined on the basis of the dynamic experimental parameters. The structure eigenfrequencies were determined in modal analysis. In the study, the basic incidental models were set. The models were identified by many years of monitoring incidental situations and the most frequent human errors in work with heavy structures. The combined load models of structure are defined in the paper since the incidents simply arise as consequences of cumulative errors and failures. A feature of a combined model is that the single incident causes the next incident (consecutive timing) as well as that other simple dynamic actions are simultaneous. The structure was observed in three typical load positions taken from the crane passport (range-load). The obtained dynamic responses indicate the degree of structural sensitivity depending on the character of incident. The dynamic coefficient KD was adopted as a parameter for the evaluation of structural sensitivity.
Reinforced concrete core-wall structures with buckling-restrained brace outriggers are interesting systems which have the ability to absorb and dissipate energy during strong earthquakes. Outriggers can change the energy demand in a tall building. In this paper, the energy demand was studied by using the nonlinear time history analysis for the mentioned systems. First, the structures were designed according to the prescriptive codes. In the dynamic analysis, three approaches for the core-wall were investigated: single plastic hinge (SPH), three plastic hinge (TPH) and extended plastic hinge (EPH). For SPH approach, only one plastic hinge is allowed at the core-wall base. For TPH approach, three plastic hinges are allowed, one at the base and two others at the upper levels. For EPH approach, the plasticity can extend anywhere in the wall. The kinetic, elastic strain, inelastic and damping energy demand subjected to forward directivity near-fault and ordinary far-fault earthquakes were studied. In SPH approach for all near-fault and far-fault events, on average, more than 65 percent of inelastic energy is absorbed by buckling-restrained braces in outrigger. While in TPH and EPH approaches, outrigger contribution to inelastic energy demand is reduced. The contribution of outrigger to inelastic energy absorption for the TPH and EPH approaches does not differ significantly. The values are approximately 25 and 30 percent, respectively.

This paper summarises the results of a numerical study on the non linear response of steel concentric braced frames under monotonic and cyclic loads, using force-based finite elements with section fibre discretisation. The first part of the study is addressed to analyse the single brace response. A parametric analysis was carried out and discussed to evaluate the accuracy of the model, examining the influence of the initial camber, the material modelling, the type of force-based element, the number of integration points and the number of fibers. The second part of the paper is concerned with the modelling issues of whole braced structures. The effectiveness of the modelling approach is verified against the nonlinear static and dynamic behaviour of different type of bracing configurations. The model sensitivity to brace-to-brace interaction and the capability of the model to mimic the response of complex bracing systems is analyzed. The influence of different approaches for modelling the inertia, the equivalent viscous damping and the brace hysteretic response on the overall structural response are also investigated. Finally, on the basis of the performed numerical study general modelling recommendations are proposed.

High-rise apartments of shear wall system are governed by flexural behavior like a cantilever beam. Installation of the damper-brace system in a structure governed by flexural behavior is not suitable. Because of relatively high lateral stiffness of the shear wall, a load is not concentrate on the brace and the brace cannot perform a role as a damping device. In this paper, a friction damper applying flexibility of shear wall is proposed in order to reduce the deformation of a structure. To evaluate performance of the proposed friction damper, nonlinear time history analysis is executed by SeismoStruct analysis program and MVLEM(multi vertical linear element model) be used for simulating flexural behavior of the shear wall. It is found that control performance of the proposed friction damper is superior to one of a coupled wall with rigid beam. In conclusion, this study verified that the optimal control performance of the proposed friction damper is equal to 45 % of the maximum shear force inducing in middle-floor beam with rigid beam.

The self-excited vibrations of airfoil is related to the classical flutter problems, and it has been studied as a system with linear stiffness and small damping. However, since the actual aircraft wing and the many mechanical elements of airfoil type have various design variables and parameters, some of these could have strong nonlinearities, and the nonlinearities could be unexpectedly strong as the parameters vary. This abrupt chaotic behavior undergoes ordered routes, and the behaviors after these routes are uncontrollable and unexpectable since it is extremely sensitive to initial conditions. In order to study the chaotic behavior of the system, three parameters are considered, i.e., free-stream velocity, elastic distance and zero-lift angle. If the chaotic parameter region can be identified from the mathematically modeled nonlinear differential equation system, the designs which avoid chaotic regions could be suggested. In this study, by using recently developed dynamically system methods, and chaotic regions on the parameter plane will be found and the safe design variables will be suggested.
