  • The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of osteocalcin (serum bone GLA-protein, BGP) and procollagen carboxy-terminal propeptide (PICP) on new bone formation of canine fracture models. Serum osteocalcin and PICP were measured by standard RIA. The values of osteocalcin and PICP in the non-union and delayed-union fracture models were measured biweekly for 20 weeks in 14 dogs. The unions were radiographed for fracture healing. In non-union fracture group, the activity of BGP was markedly increased at four to eight weeks and decreased at twelve to twenty weeks and the activity of PICP was markedly increased at two to six weeks and slightly decreased at sixteen to twenty weeks. In delayed-union fracture group, the activity of BGP was markedly increased at two to eight weeks after treatment and maintained for the level until twenty weeks and the activity of PICP was markedly increased at two to six weeks after treatment and maintained for the level until twenty weeks. Radiologically, non-union group was not achieved until twenty weeks after fracture, delayed-union group was successfully achieved in eighteen weeks after fracture. These results suggested that the. activities of osteocalcin and PICP are useful parameters for biochemical markers of bone formation in dogs.

  • The formation characteristics of calcium carbonates are closely related to the durability and mechanical properties of cement-based materials. In this regard, a deep understanding of the reaction pathway of calcium carbonates is critical. Recently, non-classical nucleation theory was summarized and it was presumed that prenucleation clusters are present. The formation of the prenucleation cluster at undersaturated condition (≈ 0.1 ml) in the present study was investigated via electrical characteristics of an electrolytic solution. Calcium chloride dihydrate (CaCl2·2H2O) and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) were used as starting materials to supply calcium and carbonate sources, respectively. Furthermore, the reaction pathway of calcium carbonates was investigated by time-resolved polarization and depolarization characteristics of the electrolytic solution. The time-resolved polarization and depolarization tests were conducted by switching polarity with an interval of 20 seconds for 1 hr and by measuring the variation of electrical resistance. It can be inferred from the results obtained in the present study that the reactive constituent for the formation of calcium carbonates was mostly consumed in the period possibly associated with the prenucleation and the reaction pathways may be governed by the monomer-addition mechanism.

  • In order to clarify regeneration processes and mechanisms of the disturbed Pinus densiflora forest, responses of Pinus densiflora to gap formed by disturbance were analysed by growth of saplings and mature and growth equations were obtained from branch growth of mature trees and height growth of saplings, and age distribution of saplings and young trees recruited within gap was analysed in relation to gap age. Height growth of saplings within gaps was accelerated after gap formation. Such abrupt increases of growth of saplings after the gap formation might be resulted in the difference of growth of saplings between gap and non-gap areas. In fact, height and diameter of saplings in the central part of gap were larger than those of saplings in marginal parts of gap and non-gap area. However, density of saplings was not different in both parts. In addition, growth of annual rings of mature trees bordering on gap also increased after gap formation. Branch growth of mature trees bodering on gap was 6.3 - 6.5 cm /year and the mean radius of gaps created by death of only one canopy tree was about 3 m. Therefore, for those gaps to be closed by branch growth it will take 46 years. Growth of saplings within gap showed exponential equation. Fifty years will be required for the saplings to enter the forest canopy by the exponential growth equation. Therefore, gap created by only one tree might be closed by branch growth of surrounding canopy trees in advance of being done by height growth of saplings. But gaps created by death of trees more than 2 will be closed by the growth of saplings. Among the regenerating saplings and young trees within gaps, individuals established in advance of gap formation were more than those established after the gap formation. From these results, it was assumed that the disturbed Pinus densiflora forests in these sites were regenerated by height growth of saplings recruited in advance of gap formation.

  • The problem of defining the relationship between interior space and exterior envelope of a building has long been a challenging task in the field of architecture throughout its history. This research chronologically reviews some of the important turning points in various schools of thoughts concerning construction of exterior envelope, with focus on how they influenced and altered the formation of our interior environment. This research also stipulates on how technological advance in the late 20th century laid grounds for a new type of interior-exterior relations in architecture through creation of flexible and ambiguous boundary conditions. The focus of this qualitative research will be on contemporary works of Japanese architects Toyo Ito, SANAA, and related group of architects who address the issues of transparency, flexible interior layout, buffer zones, structural facade, and neutralized (homogeneous) space that produces spatial quality of non-linear, non-hierarchical, and de-materialized space as a direct alternative to modern principles of space making.

  • Although engineered Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermenting cellobiose is useful for the production of biofuels from cellulosic biomass, cellodextrin accumulation is one of the main problems reducing ethanol yield and productivity in cellobiose fermentation with S. cerevisiae expressing cellodextrin transporter (CDT) and intracellular β-glucosidase (GH1-1). In this study, we investigated the reason for the cellodextrin accumulation and how to alleviate its formation during cellobiose fermentation using engineered S. cerevisiae fermenting cellobiose. From the series of cellobiose fermentation using S. cerevisiae expressing only GH1-1 under several culture conditions, it was discovered that small amounts of GH1-1 were secreted and cellodextrin was generated through trans-glycosylation activity of the secreted GH1-1. As GH1-1 does not have a secretion signal peptide, non-conventional protein secretion might facilitate the secretion of GH1-1. In cellobiose fermentations with S. cerevisiae expressing only GH1-1, knockout of TLG2 gene involved in non-conventional protein secretion pathway significantly delayed cellodextrin formation by reducing the secretion of GH1-1 by more than 50%. However, in cellobiose fermentations with S. cerevisiae expressing both GH1-1 and CDT-1, TLG2 knockout did not show a significant effect on cellodextrin formation, although secretion of GH1-1 was reduced by more than 40%. These results suggest that the development of new intracellular β-glucosidase, not influenced by non-conventional protein secretion, is required for better cellobiose fermentation performances of engineered S. cerevisiae fermenting cellobiose.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of loop formation and heat treatment upon the elastic properties of orthodontic wires. The specimens selected were .016', .018', .016x.022', and .018x.022' sized stainless steel (standard) and cobalt-chromium-nickel wires, and were divided into 7 groups as; 1. straight non-heat treated 2. U looped non-heat treated 3. L looped non-heat treated 4. Circle looped non-heat treated 5. U looped heat treated 6. L looped heat treated 7. Circle looped heat treated Heat treatment was performed in Big Jane furnace at 850' F for 3 minutes. The elastic limit and the elastic range of each specimen were determined by bending test, and load deflection rate was computed from those values. The findings were as follows; 1. The formation of loop resulted in increased load-deflection rate for both stainless steel and cobalt-chromium-nickel wires. 2. The heat treated group showed higher load-deflection rate than non-heat treated group, which was more apparent in cobalt-chromiumnickel wire than in stainless steel wire. 3. L loop had the highest load-deflection rate among 3 types of loops, followed by U loop and circle loop. 4. The specimens with greater diameter displayed the more increase in load-deflection rate by looping and heat treatment.

  • In this paper, we study the pattern formation to a general Degn-Harrison reaction model. We show Turing instability happens by analyzing the stability of the unique positive equilibrium with respect to the PDE model and the corresponding ODE model, which indicate the existence of the non-constant steady state solutions. We also show the existence periodic solutions of the PDE model and the ODE model by using Hopf bifurcation theory. Numerical simulations are presented to verify and illustrate the theoretical results.

  • The aim of this study is to increase the solubility and dissolution rate of clonixin by inclusion complex formation. Inclusion complexes of clonixin, a non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug, with ${\beta]-cyclodextrin$ were $2-hydrolrypropyl-{\beta]-cyclodextrin$ were prepared by freeze drying method. Inclusion complex formation of clonixin with cyclodextrins was determined by UV, IR and DSC. The apparent stability constants were calculated from the phase solubility diagrams. Dissolution rate and solubility of clonixin in water markedly increased by the complex formation.
